Disney shutters LucasArts, Star Wars 1313 canceled [Update]

150 people laid off, according to reports.

April 3, 2013 / 01:52 PM EDT / (@salromano)

Disney has closed Star Wars game developer LucasArts, and with it, Star Wars 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault, the company has confirmed.

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games,” a LucasArts representative told Game Informer. “As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

According to a Kotaku report, some 150 people were laid off in the closure.

Update: Though currently canceled, Star Wars 1313 could still be saved, according to a LucasArts representative.

“All of these things happened at once,” the rep told Game Informer. “Naturally, as any company that goes through a big announcement like this, you have to look through your whole portfolio and realign some things. 1313 was looking fantastic, the reception has been great. Our other unannounced titles are fine, it just got to a point where from a business standpoint we couldn’t continue developing those internally and keep up with the direction that the company was going.

“It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we’re just looking at different models rather than internal production… They’re evaluating everything. There’s always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing.”

What? This isn’t a sick, late April Fool’s joke?
I’m baffled. The tiny bit we saw of Star Wars 1313 looked amazing.

    • JuicieJ

Your profile picture sums up the world’s reaction to this perfectly.

  • Shadow

Wow, This is so sudden. It looked like it had a really bright future and could’ve become an awesome series, this is terrible news, and a mistake in my opinion.

    • hush404

Sadly, Disney has a track record of shutting down games/studios. They bought Black Rock Studios, made that ATV game and then scrapped the entire team. Same with the Pirates of the Caribbean game, it looked rather good and they just scrapped it. Warren Spector’s studio JP, scrapped after Epic Mickey 2.

They just don’t give things a chance, scrap things on a whim.

      • Marco Tinè

Yeah, I remember in particular Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned, it had a very interesting base concept. We never came to know exactly why it got canceled.

      • Bloodios

Actually, wasn’t Split/Second the last game Black Rock Studios developed? Apparently, it didn’t sell too hot, which is a shame because I really enjoyed that game.

        • hush404

Right. Must of slipped my mind. I usually think of Pure first when I think of BRS.

I had a feeling this was going to happen but…ugh, what a terrible generation. I don’t even want to think about the casualties from next gen.

Now get this…..They canceled 1313…..for “Star Wars: Angry Birds”. It’s true. Disney said they wanted to steer away from expensive, platform-based games for app-based games.
The most anticipated Star Wars game since “Knights Of The Old Republic” SHELVED…..for “Angry Birds”.
    FUCK Disney.

Yea wasn’t such a terrible loss. Defend that utter shit.

Licensing the SW franchise out to other developers = better possibility of good games.

    • DrForbidden

Licensing the franchise out to other developers does not guarantee or increase the odds of getting good games. If it did, Aliens: Colonial Marines would be the best game ever. Other developers are equally capable of making garbage and of screwing up otherwise good concepts.

The example you used is an undeniably shitty game, but it’s a Kinect game. What were you expecting?

      • rockman29

Did I use the word guarantee anywhere?

        • Elvick

You certainly imply it by acting like the inhouse development only ends in terrible games. Using shovelware as your example.

I can find countless shovelware titles that were outsourced too. Doesn’t mean that they’re all terrible.

          • rockman29

Does anyone speak English here anymore?

        • DrForbidden

“Licensing the franchise out to other developers does not guarantee or increase the odds of getting good games.”

You didn’t. I’m just pointing out that it’s always a crapshoot whoever is making a game. There are no guarantees, and that also means that improved odds aren’t related to outsourcing.

          • rockman29

            OK fair enough I agree.

  • Neutron15

    save 1313!!!

  • Solomon_Kano

This makes me sad, but then my favorite LucasArts games were all licensed so I’m not quite sure how I feel about this. I really hope somebody saves 1313.

seriously!? Way to let fans down… I’ve been anticipating 1313 for quite some time now. Feel bad for all the people that got laid off, especially in the middle of working on what I’m sure was a real labor of love for these people. I’d be crushed! First the announcement about the Clone Wars Tv series being cancelled now this!? Downright depressing I say.

  • Kurisu Makise

    DISNEY!!!!!! ╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

  • http://blacksitepsu.deviantart.com/ BlacksitePSU

Doesn’t shifting LucasArts to a licensing model mean they’re restricted to only publishing future Star Wars titles? It’s sad to hear about people losing their jobs (in any industry) but the Battlefront and KotOR series, which many people, including myself, enjoyed were developed by external studios.

Star Wars 1313 looked really nice but also very linear. We knew very little about it so I’m not really disappointed at the news of its cancellation.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! What about the Monkey Island IP??? Hope it goes back to Ron Gilbert. :D

No picture more apt to describe the Disney Corporation:

Stupid. “The game was looking great, people were excited, let’s cancel it!”

Maybe, they should have kept doing internal development while the quality seemed to actually exist. O: Maybe that’s why they’ve been doing relatively poorly in the past. O:

    Stupid.

  • Kobracon

Wow alot of Star Wars fans here, huh? I feel completely indifferent about this… As long as they don’t mess up Marvel, I could care less about Space Fight 1212

    • BigDix

This is about way, way more than Star Wars. LucasArts is a legendary studio that hadn’t sunken to depths any lower than the rest of the modern industry, who didn’t do jack shit to deserve an ambush with a total shutdown. They weren’t to be counted out any more than anyone else, and you can believe they’d have been around for the foreseeable future were it not for Disney.

Let this serve as the greatest recent portent of what corporate acquisition can lead to in this industry; if they can ride in and close down LucasArts, nearly anything is possible. Those bastards have absolutely no fucking respect for this company, the people employed there or the work they’ve done. These people haven’t the slightest fucking clue. A legacy of decades of great, influential games, and a people’s lifeblood gone just to satisfy this timeless bullshit abstract that is the pursuit of diversification followed up by a great, heaping, schizophrenic helping of total conformation to what best tickles an executive’s fancy.

In other words, DON’T BUY SHIT JUST TO FUCK IT UP. You FUCKS.

      • Kobracon

I guess not being born in time to enjoy the era of great Lucas Arts adventure games askew’s my view heavily about Lucas Arts. Coz in my time, all I ever saw LA did was Star Wars stuff and rarely anything else…

  • PrinceHeir

freaking glad Telltale already have Sam & Max back!!!

so Monkey Island what happens to that IP!??!

  • Danny Lima

    Fuck you Disney, FUCK YOU!

  • jason.hall.12@hotmail.com

i think LucasArts shoudn’t be shutdown because they are one of the best in a would George Lucas is a creator of the Star Wars even he’s retirement he’s still the creator kinda like Gene Roddenberry for his Star Trek and he has been gone a long time and his work still goes even without a creator my friends i hope star wars come’s back and continue there work George Lucas you should do something about this…

  • FUD

    I hate disney
