Batman: Arkham Origins, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC, has been announced as the cover of May’s Game Informer.

Developed by Warner Bros. Games Montreal, and not previous developers Rocksteady Studios, the game is set years prior to Arkham Asylum and Arkham City-a period when a younger Batman encounters a variety of villains for the first time.

Game Informer reports that Origins will run on Rocksteady’s modified Unreal engine, which was used to run previous Arkham titles.

The game will launch on October 25, 2013.

Additionally, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, a “2.5-D Metroid-style exploration action game,” will be released on Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita alongside the home console versions.

Blackgate is being developed by Amarture Studios, previously responsible for the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection on Vita.

A video has also been released, which contains brief snippets of the new developers talking about Origins. Watch it below.

Hmm….mixed feelings. This not being in the steady hands of Rocksteady is worrying…

      Agreed.

      Agreed.

Well, I don’t see the issue with a new developer. It’d be hard to mess up a formula that already works. LBP Vita anyone?

Let’s just hope it’s not some cash grab though, because I think if it sucks that’ll end up being the reason. And not the new developer.

edit; omg, Vita/3DS multiplat. Yas. These guys get it. Looking forward to that.

LBP Vita was an exception to the rule, but as long as the developers are talented and passionate about the actual product we should be alright. Jury’s out for me until I know more, but I’m just about cautiously optimistic.

no rocksteady, no paul dini, simultaneous release with handhelds. wow, the joker is laughing hard right now in his cell.

might as well throw in multiplayer mode where everyone controls batman predatoring each other.

So what happened to Rocksteady, exactly? They’re still around, aren’t they?

Humorously I went to the old website for Urban Chaos and found it replaced by a Russian coin collection website.

    • Solomon_Kano

They’re toiling away on something. Considering the release for this, Rocksteady’s next project is likely next-gen.

  • Fantasytales

i guess no robin in the story on this one. maybe we will see the oracle before she gets shot in this one…

    • Solomon_Kano

Well, in AC Tim is Robin and Dick is Nightwing, so maybe we’ll see Dick as Robin? Maybe he could be around already in the Arkhamverse

  • Skerj

    Hell yeah Batroid!!

  • Cry_Zero

who the fuck needs a 2.5D game on the vita? Seriously… They should do a REAL ARKHAM game for the vita, not a lazy as port of the 3ds game and im sure it will be only a port with the same graphics

Batman, you just went full Assassin’s Creed.Never go full Assassin’s Creed.

    • KingNigma

What do you mean by going “full Assassin’s Creed”? You know you’re going to play this and Black Flag.

    • Solomon_Kano

Except… Arkham City came out in 2011 and there’s no guarantee that Rocksteady’s working on another Batman game, much less one that’ll be releasing next year.

  • Tetsu

    This better have Kevin Conroy!

  • KingNigma

    No say on PS4 version?

    • Solomon_Kano

No PS4 or Xbox version. Just our current systems.
