Atlus has updated the official Shin Megami Tensei IV website with a new equipment screen gameplay video.

The protagonist’s appearance will change depending what armor he has equipped. Armor doesn’t just protect you from enemy attacks—it is strong against some and weak against others.

Weakness in Shin Megami Tensei games is very useful but an enemy of your weakness, You can die from even the easiest of bad guys because of that

I like Shin Megami Tensei IV’s menu lay-out! It’s very simple, easy to understand, and they didn’t try to complicate thing with it. The gear you’re wearing even changes on the field when you equip it, which is a very nice touch.

I wonder if being able to see your gear is a feature that will be in P5 as well? I don’t know about P4, but I’m currently playing through P3P and only certain things change in appearance.

    • Pyrofrost

I hope that feature is in P5 as well. As for P3 and P4, the only time it changes is when you wear a special type of equip, such as the swimsuit or maid outfit. You can also see changes in weapons, but that’s it.

Not quite correct. Persona 4 Golden introduced a new slot exclusively for clothes. So you can have your favorite look without having to equip a low-level armor. P4 didn’t have ‘extra’ clothes. The system you mention mainly existed in P3FES and P3P, as P3 didn’t have it.

        • Pyrofrost

I see. It has been a while since I played P4 (on PS2 release), and I played P3FES again and P3P since then. Guess my memory blended some of those in game features. xD

That’s very interesting, I’d never heard of that in any of the promo materials I read for the game. P5 will be crazy when it comes out.

This game looks more and more fantastic with every little update.
Atlus is mostly the reason I own both a 3DS and a Vita. Played the hell out of Devil Survivor Overclocked and Devil Survivor 2 (even though its a DS game) on my 3DS. Will get Soul Hackers soon and will love SMTIV when it arrives as well.
P4G solely sold me for the Vita… so hopefully Atlus delivers more SMT-related games here as well.

i guess these are supposed to be the magatama/mantra of the game

  • Eclipse

Sweet, I think this is a first for the SMT (Mainline) series where your choice of equipment actually shows on the MCs appearance! I hope there will be an equippable Demonica suit. ;)

  • Budgiecat

If only you could see your character in battle and the enemies were 3D character models (since it’s on a 3D system and all….) -_-

    • MosquitoLemon

Weeellll, to be fair, first-person battles were a standard of classic SMT games. I think Nocturne was the only one to not have them. I more or less expected that.

      • HeatPhoenix

Nocturne was the first, but every after that ran on the Nocturne engine, so they kept it in. It would’ve taken more…effort to do that here as well.

      • Budgiecat

Then why bother making the exploration in 3rd person…

A U.S. release hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s Atlus, so expect it to come over.

Kinda defeat the purpose of showing the equipment when you can’t look at them in battle.
