In-development shooter reportedly not affected, will be at E3.

Jason West (pictured left), the co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise and co-founder of Respawn Entertainment, has left the studio he founded with Vince Zampella under Electronic Arts in April 2010.

According to a Kotaku source, West’s departure was amicable and due to family issues. He reportedly left last May. A Giant Bomb report echoes that claim, saying West “has not been involved in active development for Respawn’s game for a number of months now.” Polygon says his leave was “not related to any issues at the studio, but rather a desire by West to simply retire.”

According to Giant Bomb’s Patrick Klepeck, West’s retirement has not impacted the studio’s in-development shooter, which will be at this year’s E3.

Thanks, NeoGAF.

The use of the word “retire” intrigues me. Other articles claim that the sources say West had not been involved with the game since the favorable settlement with Activision.

It would not surprise me that after being attached to a multi-million selling mega-franchise and winning a lawsuit against the multi-billion dollar company that managed the property, that he would truly retire early, if that’s what he did. Granted, the details of the settlement were not disclosed, but it would make sense if the settlement involved huge sums of money in payouts, considering the suit was about money in the first place.

I’m…kinda sad that he left. Retire is an even bigger pill to swallow but considering the money he made and factoring in how long he’s been in the industry; I’d probably retire and focus on the family too. Good luck to him, though I really did want to see what a project lead up by him and Vince without Activision could be like =(
