Gundam Breaker PlayStation 3 beta announced

Customize your own Mobile Suit in upcoming demo.

Namco Bandai has announced a pre-release Japanese beta for the PlayStation 3 version of Gundam Breaker. (The full game is also coming to PS Vita.)

The free beta will allow players to create their own Mobile Suit by combining various Gundam plastic model parts. It will include a tutorial mission, defense mission, boss battle against a (giant) Perfect Gundam, and a crack at the game’s customization and upgrade systems. After missions, which are received in the VR Hangar, players can gain parts and experience points, which can “version up” their OS.

A release date for the beta was not announced.

Outside of the beta announcement, Namco Bandai also revealed a new stage and three new Gundam for the retail release.

The new stage is called “Gundam Plastic Model Workshop.” Players will be able to fight on the desk where Gundam plastic models are created. You’ll see packages for plastic model versions of Zeta Gundam and other mecha, alongside various paint tubes and art materials.

New characters confirmed for Gundam Breaker include Master Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam G, Freedom Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, and Heavy Arms from Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.

        thanks

    looks ace :D

  • ShinAsura(新阿修羅)

Will probably not get localized seeing as how none past Musou 2 haven’t

    • Solomon_Kano

We got got the whole DW Gundam “trilogy” localized.

      • ShinAsura(新阿修羅)

Well they haven’t localized any of their recent titles since Musou 2

        • veruses

I think you mean DWG3 which is Musou 3. Not 2.

        • Budgiecat

Be more specific. NamcoBandai has not localized any self developed Gundam games for PS3/360/PSP/3DS/VITA/Wii/PC since Gundam Crossfire for PS3. They have however, published all three of the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam games (Gundam Musou 1,2,3) which are developed by Omega Force of KoeiTecmo.

  • Solomon_Kano

I wish Namdai would get back to localizing Gundam games. What was the last one we got, not counting the Musou titles? That crappy PS3 launch title?

Come on, Namdai! We still love Gundam over here!

*sigh* Well, I’ll just have to hope this one’s import-friendly.

    • MosquitoLemon

The problem is that nobody is willing to prove they love Gundam. Pirate the shows, pirate the manga, pirate the games, and then whine about how they don’t like Musou. Buy 1,000 copies of Gundam the Origin if you want Gundam to stand a chance :

      • Solomon_Kano

True. A damn shame. I’d love to see a new one localized, but I can understand Namdai’s skepticism as to whether anybody would actually pay for it.

      • Gyro Zeppeli

Yeah no, the problem is that Bandai has made almost nothing but poor decisions regarding the franchise in the US. Unsuccessfully trying to push UC, releasing far too many toys during G Gundam’s run, even THINKING that anyone wanted SD Gundam Force, bringing over SEED and SEED Destiny of all things rather than something that would be more of a hit with the Wing and G crowd, releasing series like Zeta Gundam on DVD with absolutely no advertising, airing Gundam 00 on Sci-Fi instead of Adult Swim, etc.

Because of all this, Bandai Entertainment is basically dead now and Bandai America has nothing to do with Gundam anymore. But hey, both of those things might actually be really good. Gunpla sales have been good lately thanks to Bluefin, and Vertical seems to be doing well with Gundam the Origin.

        • MosquitoLemon

Seed and Destiny were GIGANTIC in Asia, and still are. Just because the internet fanboys pretend like it’s the worst thing ever doesn’t make it a bad business decision to try to replicate its success in America. Americans just got tired of mecha anime after G. Anime in general is going back to being a niche thing, and American fans aren’t putting their money behind Gundam, even when given the chance.

          • Gyro Zeppeli

SEED is gigantic in Asia, but it was way too similar to UC to appeal to Toonami’s audience. Kids didn’t watch Toonami for politics and space drama and such, they wanted to see things like Heavyarms spamming it’s stock footage at the enemy, or Domon doing his shining finger. It also didn’t help that Bandai did stupid, 4kids-esque things like RAY GUNS.

            • MosquitoLemon

True about what kids wanted to see, but again, the censored stuff is not Bandai’s fault, it was a restriction for daytime cartoons. They aired it ‘uncut’ at night.

        • MosquitoLemon

Oh and no hard feelings, I’m not jumping down your throat on purpose, I just freak out when people act like Gundam still has this giant fanbase in the US. I love Gundam, but I know it’s not going to reach Naruto levels of popularity. I mean, the only reason it gained any popularity back in the day is because Wing started airing right around when DBZ ended, and shounen fans were looking for something to fill the void. Then we got flooded with anime, and kids ($$$) started clinging on to shows other than Gundam- partly Bandai’s fault, though I don’t think pushing a 25+ year old anime (Zeta) was the way to go when kids were getting spoiled with brand new stuff.

I don’t quite understand Namco’s logic in not localizing some Gundam games, considering they take the time to localize the Armored Core games. Not to mention Gundam would probably sell a lot more than Armored Core just from name alone since it has anime, manga, model kits, etc.

      • MosquitoLemon

I don’t know all the details, but voice acting is part of it. Most recent Gundam games are Sony (PS3/PSP), and SEA won’t allow physical releases of games unless they have full English voice (see One Piece Musou and Warriors Orochi 3 for reference).

So that’s half of the equation – they don’t want to pay for English voice actors, so they opt to do digital or nothing. So why not digital?

Well, I have no answer to that, but I can tell you that THERE ARE NO DIGITAL GUNDAM GAMES*. Even in Japan, you will not find a single Gundam game on PSN. Not the 5 or so PS3 titles, nor any of the 6+ PSP titles. Strange, unexplained no-digital Gundam policy? Seems like reason enough that we’ll never see a single one on our shores.

Oh, and about Armored Core selling more than Gundam… we don’t have the model kits in America. Or anime. Or manga**. We used to, like, when Wing was popular… 13 years ago? And I guess Seed was mildly successful for a month or two? And then 00 was a total flop that nobody watched because the majority of people had pirated it and didn’t bother watching the SciFy run? Or buying the DVDs? And then Bandai Visual dissolved so Unicorn will never finish in the US (pirate away folks, you earned it!) Armored Core games are cheap by comparison, have a lineage, and aren’t tied to expensive licenses (heck, NamcoBandai JP doesn’t even have anything to do with it).

*Gundam Battle Operation, but that doesn’t count – it’s online-only/digital-only.

**Gundam: The Origin, out soon, preorder or buy from your local anime store. No less than 5 copies, or Gundam will cry.

We DO have the model kits in America, they’re being distributed by Bluefin. I know you’re the kind of guy with a major hard-on for blaming pirates, but 00 flopped because they chose to air it on Sci-Fi of all channels with almost no advertising. Unicorn IS going to finish in the US, the trailers for episode 6 were dubbed into English and it’s being released worldwide via download and blu-ray.

          • MosquitoLemon

Having an outside company import models and sell them to people at marked up prices is not the same as when Bandai specifically manufactured models for distribution in the US. I can find several Chinese malls in Canada that sell legit Gundam models as well, but they are still at Japanese market prices. If those models actually sold in volume, we’d still have Gundam in America.

They didn’t ‘decide’ to air it on Sci-Fi, Sci-Fi was the only channel willing to show a product that had already failed in America.

And sorry I didn’t know about episode 6 of Unicorn. Maybe they had already dubbed the entire series before Bandai Visual went under, and just needed a distributor.. don’t know who got the rights to publish it though.

In any case, one little example isn’t enough to allay my main point – Gundam is dead in America because nobody put their money behind it. Prove me wrong and support Gundam The Origin until the entire series is released (the way sales are going now, it’ll be cancelled by volume 4).

            • Gyro Zeppeli

Bluefin isn’t some outside company selling the merchandise for marked up prices, they’re the official distributor for gunpla and several figure lines in the US such as Robot Damashii and SH Figuarts.

Bandai actually notices and cares about the sales they make, and not only have gunpla sales been growing in the US, but the kits have actually become more and more available in recent years despite the lack of any sort of presence on TV. See http://archive.foolz.us/_/search/text/gunpla/username/Derringer/

Vertical’s already said that low sales won’t stop them from publishing all of Origin, but it will stop them from licensing other Gundam titles. I’ve already got the first three volumes on preorder.

I really wanted Gundam on my Vita. ):

      • Budgiecat

you want condom on your gina??

      • Solomon_Kano

Seriously. I even would’ve bought Seed if they localized it, and I didn’t even like Seed.

  • Budgiecat

Cool. Wonder when it’ll be up

  • MosquitoLemon

That sounds really cool, I’m getting hyped!
