Five week delay to 'raise the bar even further.'

The Last of Us has been delayed to June 14, Sony has confirmed.

Initially set to launch on May 7, developer Naughty Dog said the five week delay is to assure the game raises the bar even further.

Find the studio’s full statement below.

The Last of Us is an ambitious project. In many ways it may be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious project to date – brand new universe and cast of characters, brand new tech, brand new genre, not to mention it’s easily the longest campaign Naughty Dog has ever made.

As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realize just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards.

As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games – gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure The Last of Us raises that bar even further – for ourselves, and most importantly, for you, our fans.

The extra wait will be very short and your patience will be rewarded. Update your calendars. You won’t even have to change seasons. The Last of Us will be available June 14th, 2013. Until then, know that we will be working extremely hard to deliver an experience that matches your high expectations.

    Love you ND

  • Sevyne

I have too many games to get right now anyway. A delay of 1 month is fine.

That and it’s Naughty Dog so you know it’s for good reason.

    • Budgiecat

plus JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure comes out in August..

  • Fantasytales

Nice an extra month to save for that sweet collectors edition!!

  • Prodigy-X

    Its worth the wait.

If we read this comments we come to realize that ND have earned a AAA
status as developer, everybody undertand the delay even if they dont
know exactly the reason and that its because ND its awsome studio and
thats a really tough thing to win from the people.

ND keep the great work, we just love u!!!

Coming out on a Friday? The day after e3? Why not before the show?

    That date is really odd.

I know games come out on Friday sometimes, but not usually in the US. I wonder if that date is worldwide or not?

I’m fine with the delay, still going to buy the game at launch. <3 ND.

Infamous 2 had the same release day.

Infamous 2 launched on June 7th. Which was the first day of e3 2011. I was kinda questioning the 14th date with this in mind.

I think Sony should consider releasing the game (The Last of Us) on the 11th, the first day of e3 2013. Then … it would be following the path of Infamous 2.

    I can wait.

Funny how people complaint about other games being delay. And now they like “oh it kool” FUNNY

Well it depends what you’re comparing it to.

In this case, it’s just over a month delay, and the reason is to make the game the best it can be.

Then, if you look at a game like Rayman Legends—the game, which is complete, was delayed seven months in order to prep the game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and release those versions simultaneously with the Wii U version. Obviously, Wii U owners are going to get upset. Especially considering they announced the delay / multiplatform jump just a few weeks before the game was set to release for Wii U. From a business standpoint, it makes sense. Release all three versions at once, single marketing campaign, less money spent in the long run, profit. But from a consumer standpoint, I can see why a lot of people would be upset.

Anyhow, I digress. But yeah, my point is, the circumstances usually decide these things.

    take your time

  • EspadaKiller

Definitely can wait, no hurry for me!

  • Skerj

Longest campaign they’ve done to date? That’s quite impressive since I recall the second and third PS2 Jak games being rather lengthy. I hope Sony doesn’t waste E3 time showing the game off after it had already released like they did with inFamous 2.

I’m sad and yet, my wallet is relieved, which means everything is fine. A month to breath and I’ll focus everything on The Last of Us in June.
