Rumor: PlayStation 4 controller prototype pictured

There's a developer kit in the background, too.

Destructoid has published a photo of what looks to be a prototype of the PlayStation 4 controller with a PlayStation 4 developer kit in the background.

Kotaku sources have backed the outlet’s post, saying it’s “the real deal,” but “may not represent the final form of the controller.”

I wouldn’t think it does. Looks way too “this is just for development purposes” compared to Sony’s usually sexy sleek designs.

The controller seems to match the description of what’s been rumored: touch-pad in the center and repositioned PlayStation, Start, and Select buttons. Not mentioned in earlier rumors, however, is the light up-top the controller and the speaker just below the touchpad. And if you look closely, there even appears to be a microphone jack (or something similar) at the controller’s base.

  • Potionzmaster

    … I just hope that’s a prototype.

    • Sevyne

It clearly says that it is. Do you really think the actual controller will be wired? Seriously.

      • Potionzmaster

I wasn’t talking about the wire..? More so about the general, bulky shape of it.

        • Sevyne

Yes and the wire was simply one detail I was pointing out wouldn’t be there. Doesn’t change the fact that it’s a prototype and will not be exactly like this. These are simply tossed together with the planned features so developers can get to work on games for the console. It’ll be a bit more elegant than what you see here.

Look at the prototype Wii U game pad. That thing sucked. Circle Pads n all. Oh and the buttons were smaller and not staggered with the Circle Pads, but directly below them instead. The + and – buttons were on the bottom. It was terrible.

  • Sevyne

A few things I’d like it to keep for the final version are the clearly inspired Vita dpad and the new sticks. Get some real triggers on it, give it a little better form and it’ll be fine. I’d like the sticks to be staggered, but I never expected them to be.

  • DarthBrian

maybe that blue light on top of the controller is like the ball on the end of the move controller.

    • Sevyne

A lot of people speculating that, yeah.

Also if you look to the top left of the touchpad and above the dpad to the right you can see this little square like something is supposed to be there. My guess is on the final model that a camera will be in that spot.

      • DarthBrian

        Awwww, I thought I was special. T_T

IGN speculates that button is the share button that was rumored previously. But it could be a camera too. I can’t wait to find out! ^_^

        • Sevyne

Hey, it could be that too. We’ll see soon enough!

          • DarthBrian

There’s a lightened-up picture someone posted on NeoGaf. There are buttons on either side of the touchpad. Could be the new select/start button locations.

            http://www.abload.de/img/11xjjj.jpg

            • Sevyne

              I see it now. Interesting…

            • shogunknight

Aside from the unknown blue glow, the pad is actually decent. I thought with all the rumored features that it might end up being a crampled pad. Looking forward to the conference

              • Sevyne

The blue glow seems to be PS Move integration.

            • Sevyne

Oh, another interesting thing is how the L1 and R1 buttons were pushed back further. This could also mean real triggers for L2 and R2 like the Dreamcast controller or something like the Wii U tablet triggers. This is great for me since I always use my index fingers on L2/R2 and move them up when I need to hit L1/R1 because holding it with 4 fingers covering the triggers is uncomfortable as hell. This shift in the triggers will fix that and I will likely be able to properly hold it without discomfort now.

        • DesmaX

Hm, kinda hard to reach for a Share button…

          But I gueas it’s just a prototype, so…

  • Prodigy-X

I like it but its a little bit fat but I still like it. Can’t wait till Feb 20, 2013

  • http://twitter.com/Elvick Elvick

Prototype things always look really weird compared to retail.

  • Raiyu

I like it, thank you Sony for Vita dpad…and it looks like a microphone/headphone port on the bottom. Not too fond of the speakers though.

Edit: Now I’m not sure if those are speakers or if its a microphone on the controller?

    • http://www.di.fm Spicy Chicken

With you 100% on the dpad. FINALLY a proper d-pad on an official Sony PlayStation controller. That’s always been my one and only sticking point with their joypad design but it seems fixed at last. YES! ^_^

      • DrForbidden

        What’s wrong with the DS3 d-pad? Compared to the X360 d-pad, it’s fantastic…

        • Sevyne

DS3 pad is good, but the Vita pad is better is all. Nothing wrong with the DS3 pad.

        • rockman29

I prefer the DS3 dpad to the Vita one. But they are both good. I’d rather keep the original though.

        • http://www.di.fm Spicy Chicken

Oh that’s true, the 360 dpad is REALLY bad, but as a fighting game fan I’ve just never been able to really enjoy fighting games with the default PS dpad, and have always relied on third party pads for that reason.

Also, the dpad irks because Sony admitted (ages ago in Edge magazine) that the design for the dpad came about literally from ‘seeing how much we could remove and still make it work’, or something to that effect.

So to simplify, basically just design indulgence for the sake of it, ergonomics be DAMNED. >_>
It looks cool, of course, always has, and works for most games just fine, but in terms of ergonomics I know of no one personally that can honestly say the dpad on the PS is an improvement (or even as good as) standard dpads on the SNES, Mega Drive (Sega Genesis), Sega Saturn etc. when it comes to fighting games.

Of course many would argue I should be using joysticks anyway, but screw that, I prefer a good dpad to a joystick any day of the week.

          • ddsfan2

Don’t get me wrong, I really like the Vita dpad, (and it seems like it would be ideal for fighting games, due to microswitches, although I don’t have any for the Vita yet) as well as Sega’s dpad designs (except for Dreamcast), but I’m a big fan of the PS1-3 dpad for non arcade games, and I like that design the most of any dpad out there, probably for the same reasons that people dislike it.

Perhaps it is an individual thing, as you said, but I always prefer an arcade stick for arcade games — Sanwa or Seimitsu parts are amazingly responsive; sometimes I just play SHMUPs or Fighters just because I like using an arcade stick so much.

    • http://twitter.com/BanzaiJapan1 Banzai Japan

the ps Move was supposed to have a mic and speaker…but to cut costs they removed them..now they might bring it back

      • Raiyu

oh really? I didn’t know that. Well I hope its a mic, means I don’t have to worry about buying a mic for online.

  • DesmaX

Oh, wasn’t expecting it to look that good

  • LordKaiser

Would be good if it was a modular console and had a a socket or slot to install the Cell.

  • Aldridge517

That controller looks bulky and expensive.

  • shogunknight

My real issue with the pic is what the pad is connected to……what the freak is that robo suitcase??

    • MosquitoLemon

      dev console

  • Haku_Luvs_You

Needs to shed a few pounds and get into swimsuit shape! Other than that. I guess I kind of like it. I dunno as a prototype it looks fine. Want to see the final product.

  • TimesTicking

So is this still considered to be a dualshock controller?

    • http://twitter.com/BanzaiJapan1 Banzai Japan

      Quadruple Shock!

  • nyobzoo

from all of the touchpad rumors I thought it’ll look bulky but that looks nice

  • http://twitter.com/BanzaiJapan1 Banzai Japan

that is the LED light for the PS Move controller function!!!!!!!!!!

    Just like these….http://mikeandrustys.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/minority-report-1.jpg

its a gonna have PS Vita like controls and PS Vita games integration!

    Fantastique!

  • Revorse

Still looks DualShock-ish. I don’t have a problem with it. I hope it has a nice weight to it. I dislike light controllers.

  • MrRobbyM

May not? Of course not! That thing is hideous as hell of course the final product is going to look completely different.

  • zakou

    I like it.

  • http://twitter.com/SwimsuitHakufu ギャビン

I hope this is not real. I like the new d-pad, the new sticks look bad and it looks too damn bulky.

  • Peacenutman

If they replace the squishy R2 and L2 buttons with the Move controller trigger, it would be even better. Don’t like the Dualshock 3 R2 L2.

  • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Personally, I hope it’s just a prototype… The whole thing looks bulky and cheap compared to the DualShock… The PS button will look so much better if it was placed between the touchpad and the speaker… What the hell are those Analog sticks?

I see nothing wrong with the Dualshock’s dpad, why change it?(Legitimate Question)
    Edit: Question answered…

    • Sevyne

There isn’t anything wrong with the Dualshock’s dpad, but the Vita’s dpad is much better. This controller seems to have a Vita styled dpad and that is a good thing.

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

        @Solomon_Kano:disqus @Sevyne

Is there any significant to it? I mean, the Vita’s feels roughly the same as the Dualshock’s to me… Or are you referring to the looks?

        • Sevyne

The feel. It’s definitely not the same. The Vita one is very clicky instead of mushy and it’s form is more friendly for special motions like in fighting games and the like. It’s just overall better at precision commands and movements. That and it’s a little more comfortable.

That’s just my opinion though and if you feel differently then I can understand that.

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

That clicky sound? It makes me shiver whenever I press it… >_<

It feels so fragile I feel like I could break the buttons one day…

            • Sevyne

I just am not a huge fan of mushy buttons. It feels less responsive if that makes any sense. It’s also one reason why I don’t like the DS3 Triggers. The other reason being the location of the triggers being too high up.

        • Solomon_Kano

The way the current Dualshock d-pad is set up, each button is set in it’s own “slot”, so to speak. The Vita d-pad is connected in such a way that it makes it much easier to pull off the kind of motions required for fighting games, with each d-pad button being closer together in a concave formation. It’s almost like a cradle for your thumb, if that makes sense.

I play Darkstalkers on my Vita all the time and it’s a lot better for pulling off moves than with my DS3. If the new controller has a bigger Vita d-pad, that would be excellent. Fighters are really the only place it makes a difference though.

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

            Ah… Interconnected “slots”… Now you make sense…

Kinda non-existent for non-fighting fans(like me)…. Playing DDR could be a breeze with it too… Thanks for the answer… ^___^

            • Solomon_Kano

              No prob!

    • Solomon_Kano

I love the Dualshock d-pad and it’s been my favorite among console controllers, but the Vita’s d-pad (which this prototype’s modeled after) is even better.

    • http://twitter.com/Elvick Elvick

Do you really think Sony would release something so ugly? (I mean the first time around, I find both PS3 revisions ugly as heck)

Prototype things are usually always ugly.

      • Solomon_Kano

Like the PS3′s old boomerang controller haha.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wtfits.gardner Cat Flames

    NICE! Looks amazing!

  • Panda_castro

I hope they give us the option of using a regular control.

  • http://www.facebook.com/wtfits.gardner Cat Flames

    Love the flat Dpad <3

  • Solomon_Kano

Every time I tried to visualize what the rumors said the controller would be like I kept getting wacky stuff, so this is a pleasant surprise. Very happy to see that Vita d-pad, less so on those analog sticks. I’ve always liked Sony’s convex analogs but if they’re going to change them, they might as well make them concave like the 360 and Nintendo analogs. Still, it’s not bad. A bit bulky, but I wouldn’t really mind that. I’m interested in what the final design is gonna look like come next week.

    Come on Feb. 20th!

Digging everything except the cheap looking thumbsticks

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

I’m hoping the final version looks something like this: http://www.abload.de/img/ds4_2fguqi.jpg

  • paperclichepixel

    Very Logitech style.
    I like it.
