PS Vita price drop announced for Japan

Save $50 on Sony's high-def handheld.

February 18, 2013 / 03:11 AM EDT / (@salromano)

PlayStation Vita will receive a price cut in Japan on February 28 from its original 24,980 yen ($269, which rounded to $250 in North America) to 19,980 yen ($215, should round to about $200 in North America) for both the 3G/Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi models, Sony has announced.

    Finally !

For Japan >.<. Hopefully for the rest of the world too.

      • DrForbidden

I think that’s a given. Doesn’t make sense for Sony to only do a pricedrop for Japan when they have the entire world as their market…

        • http://kougeru.tumblr.com/ Kou

The value of the yen and such could be a factor. I havn’t looked at sales numbers so I can’t comment much more on that but unless they’re holding off for Wednesday to drop the price globally, then it’s weird that it’s taking this long to confirm.

          • DrForbidden

I don’t think it works like that. High Yen value means lower exports. An price-drop internationally is required, since Sony is a Japanese company exporting the Vita. Lowering the price in Japan due to high Yen value only happens if the Vita is an ‘import’. There is no reason to drop the domestic price of the Vita in japan due to high Yen value as it makes little difference to the people living and working in Japan.

Bummer as an early Vita owner… If it means people are happy about it and getting it, then more power to them…. ^___^

    • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

Yeah I’ll get white Vita. I already have P4G and Ragnarok Odyssey :D

    • Solomon_Kano

A price drop only benefits those of us who already own Vitas, though. Our money is already spent. If we bought it, it’s because we thought it was worth the price. Now they can sell more Vitas to the people who didn’t think it was worth the price.

More sold means more players means more games to come for everybody.

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Hate to be a pessimistic person but realistically, more sold doesn’t guarantee more games… Unless the Vita can beat 3DS…

Of course, I’m always hoping for more Vita games…

        • Solomon_Kano

Perhaps not directly, but the whole reason the Vita has so little software compared to the 3DS is because the install base is small. Remember, when the 3DS came out there was hardly anything on it. No, the software didn’t start coming until after the price drop. Why? Because there were more people to sell to.

The Vita doesn’t need to sell better than the 3DS, it just needs to sell better than it is right now. The DS outsold the PSP, but the PSP ended up with more games. The Wii outsold everything this gen, but all of the games are on PS3 and 360.

When the Vita has a larger install base it’ll prove itself worthy of more developers’ time and it’ll see more games. The same happened with the PS3, the original Xbox, and more when you look back. That’s how gaming works.

          • YangTerlupakan

see your comment just make my days, bro!!!!
but if u look back is almost need 3 years until PSP & PS3 get a good game

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Let’s see if Vita can achieve the PSP miracle with the price cut despite Nintendo backing up Japanese Devs then… Hopefully, it does…

            • Solomon_Kano

It won’t be on the same level as the PSP with that practically being the PS2 of handheld gaming, but this is the first step to it actually having something to offer alongside the 3DS.

We’ll see how long it takes, though. It took the PSP until MH showed up, and it took the PS3 pretty much until its first remodel hit.

        • http://twitter.com/Elvick Elvick

Yup, the only way to get games is to beat the 3DS. And since I see games getting announced, and continuing to release I must be on some heavy drugs. Because I swear I’ve been playing them and everything.

          Strange.

    • HassanJamal

Wonder if Sony will compensate us early buyers.

      • Skerj

Uh no, your compensation was having the system already. You can’t be an early adopter and then expect compensation because people got a better deal a year later.

        • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

A three month PS Plus compensation couldn’t hurt, right?

      • Solomon_Kano

Nintendo compensated the people who bought 3DSs early because that price drop came less than 6 months after it came out, what reason does Sony have to offer compensation?

The nature of technology is that price drops happen. You bought it at a price that was agreeable to you, the time you’ve spent with it is your compensation.

        • http://twitter.com/Elvick Elvick

It wasn’t really just that. It was also a huge price drop. $80 (or was it $70?), that early, is hardly normal.

          • Solomon_Kano

$70. Yea, that was definitely a huge drop. I mean, that’s enough off for two 3DS games almost.

  • tubers

Does it affect bundles as well? Or just the core system?

  • NCloud

    It starts :)

  • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I’ve been saving up to get a Vita. I think the price drop is going to apply worldwide, so this should help me out. ^^

Now, if Sony would just drop the memory card prices…

    • KurisuMakise

Said price drop (once applied world wide of course) will make my life much easier, so thanks Sony.

    • PrinceHeir

i have no regrets getting the AC liberation bundle(only get it due to being Ceramic White, don’t care about the game)

you definitely should get it sometime!

      • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I was close to buying it when amazon did the deal. It was just bad timing on my part. I had a few other things come up that couldn’t wait, so I had to spend some of my money I had put back. =/

        • PrinceHeir

well you now have a chance to get a discount(hopefully they do)

more concerned about memory card though.

would have prefer if it was SD tbh,

          bigger space, less cost

  • Solomon_Kano

About time! Now let’s see how big of an impact this has.

I do wonder when they’ll announce the price drop for the rest of the world, though. Will they just throw it out there in the US later today? Save it for the 20th to go along with the PS4? We’ll see.

  • Neutron15

it will only be despoiled by mankind

  • Bobo Fango

Vita doesn’t need a price drop… it just needs monster hunter to sell

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob-Obb/100001994017630 Bob Obb

A $200 Vita with bundled 8-16GB memory card and I’m in…. once it gets enough good games that aren’t ports :P

    • almostautumn

      lol
You know this is Gematsu, right? So have you just somehow conveniently missed the insane amount of original titles that have been steadily releasing for the system? The Vita has certainly established itself independent already at this point, and it’s only going to continue to do so.

  • GaySkull

    YES!!!
    Doragon’s Crown!
Can’t wait for the Western price cut on the 20th!
    Slash! Slash!

  • ShinAsura

Nice for late adopters but I don’t regret buying my limited edition MIku VITA from Japan

  • Ragiacrus

    good news!

  • HeatPhoenix

Cool pricedrop, but I would’ve bought it at this price if there were VIDEO GAMES

    • http://twitter.com/Elvick Elvick

You must have submitted before finishing, so I’ll help you.

“VIDEO GAMES THAT APPEAL TO ME”

      You’re welcome~

      • HeatPhoenix

No, you see. The Xbox 360 lack video games THAT APPEAL TO ME.
The Vita just lacks video games. What’s coming out right now, Killzone Mercenary, Soul Sacrifice, a port of a PS2 game? (FFX HD)?

The vita is bleeding to death.

        • Dede Ogbe

oh f*ck off. Senran Kagura, PSO2, Ninja Gadien Sigma 2 plus, Tales of Hearts R, Soul Sacrifice, Steins Gate, Dead or Alive 5 plus, One Piece 2, Murasama, Holy Sorcery Story, Vanhalla Knights 3,Tearaway, Killzone, Project J versus, God Eater 2, Dragon’s Crown, Guilty Gear XX accent Core Plus R,

Final Fantasy X HD,Over My Dead Body sequel,

Toukiden, and The Legend of Heroes:Trails in the flash. And thats only been whats anounced so far. Ignorant ppl like you who keep spouting nonsense like the vita has no games seriously piss me off. your either seriously out of loop or stupid. There are well over 80 games released for the vita. Thats alot better than the 3ds’ first year. Seriously do some f*cking research b4 you start spilling bull. There’s such a thing a google moron. USE IT!! Maybe then you can see how stupid you r in my eyes when you say ‘the vita has no games’ seriously r u living under a rock?

          • HeatPhoenix

You seem a bit upset, my friend.

Now, take away from those that are ports, updated re-releases and multi-plats, how many are left?

The Vita is bleeding to death and it’s up to Sony to save it. We’ll see if the price drop is enough. There’s also no need for name calling or swearing.

            • Dede Ogbe

am not upset more like irritated seeing the same thing in each forum day in day out when its not the case. hmm ok Senran Kagura, Soul Sacrifice, Tales of Hearts R, Vanhalla Knights 3, Tearaway, Killzone, Holy Sorcery Story, Over my dead body sequel, Oh and apparantly Atlus is working on a new Shin Megami Tensei project for it, and thats all i can comeup with at the top of my head atm. I dont think you can all anyone of these games minor. And why cant the vita have multi platform games? At this stage i really dont think thats an issue.

              • HeatPhoenix

Isn’t irritated a kind of upset? There’s no need for such things in a rational discussion.

Anyway, Tales of Hearts is an updated port. And I’m gonna need source on that Atlus thing. It seems that most of their recent projects have been for Nintendo consoles, SMT x FE, SMT4, Soul Hackers etc.

And the Vita can have them, they just don’t bring anything to the table by way of getting people to buy your console. Why would they if they can get the same game on a console they already own.

                • Dede Ogbe
                • Dede Ogbe

Take your point but the fact is to me saying the vita has no games is illogical. And you cant really say tales of heart is just a port. Its been rebuilt from the ground up. And multi platform games can also be seen as a incentive to get a vita. if someone was already thinking of buying one saw the line up say soul sacrifice and saw how good God eater or Toukiden looked on it, this would be an additional incentive to get one. And wiith handheld games being as popular as they are in japan this is another factor that needs to be taken into account with games such as DOA5, Project j versus, Final Fantasy x, Legend of heroes etc. A good amount of the japanese market would much rather have those types of games on the go than on their PS3.

                  • HeatPhoenix

I’m not saying it has NO games, I’m saying that the games that it does have are apparently not enough to convince the consumers to buy a Vita.

                    • DrForbidden

NO, that was EXACTLY what you were saying in your posts above. As Elvick pointed out, it just lacks games that appeal to YOU. Other people are interested in the Vita’s upcoming lineup.

                    • HeatPhoenix

I was being facetious. I guess the well is running dry when we resort to semantics, huh?

                    • DrForbidden

Probably. But then again, it probably dried up way back when tired, recycled facetiousness had to be used.

                    • HeatPhoenix

There was no discussion at that point, what was there to dry up? Please, can we discuss video games at least? I’ve not time for senseless debates about nothing in particular.

                    • DrForbidden

It was already dry before there was a discussion because “VITA haz no gamez” is already an overused and endlessly recycled trope begging for retirement by that point.

But yeah, ok, let’s call it quits.

                    • http://twitter.com/Elvick Elvick

It’s not being facetious when you take it upon yourself to then make a “list” of “all” the games coming to defend yourself. You don’t defend yourself, or your “facetious” argument when being facetious. You either laugh and move on, or if you feel compelled say right away you were being facetious. You don’t try to propel your “facetious” argument forward.

You’re simply back peddling because you’re factually wrong, and you were called on it by more than one person.

  • LordKaiser

Vita gen 2 with HDMI plz!
