Platinum Games wants to buy Darksiders

Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta 2 developer Platinum Games wants to buy the Darksiders IP, which unfortunately didn’t make a sale at yesterday’s THQ IP and studio auction.

“Darksiders seriously didn’t sell at THQ’s studio and bulk IP sale? I want to buy it… if it was cheap,” said Platinum Games producer Atsushi Inaba in a tweet.

Following today’s announcements, Darksiders franchise lead designer Haydn Dalton tweeted: “There was a shimmer on a slither of hope, that at one point, there’d be a Darksiders III: 4 Player Co-Op; It rode off into the sunset today.”

What do you say, THQ? Can ya slip an IP Platinum’s way at a discount price?

    Nintendo should have bought Vigil. Would have made sense considering the whole Zelda inspiration thing.

      That would definitely make the most sense and I’d be quite happy with that, but I’d love if Platinum Games did as well.

      Really a shame that they didn’t. They need more than just Retro and Ubisoft scraps to provide exclusive western content for their platforms.

      I’d almost whole heartily agree with this other than the fact that we’d have another Bayonetta 2 situation where all future sequels would probably end up exclusive to the Wii U.

      Not that I have anything against the Wii U (hell I’m considering purchasing one eventually after all the announcements today) but having a franchise that I began on PS3 (and others 360) not make it to one of either of their successors just doesn’t sit well with me, personally.

      But, in the end, if that’s what it takes to save that studio and/or franchise, I wouldn’t be against it as the only other outcome would for them to close and no studio with the talent they have deserves that fate.

        That would suck look at what they did to Tomb Raider.. I say give it to PG.

          Not so at all, and in the sense I meant in Publish, Square did look like they assisted in Tomb Raider’s cut scenes, but it matches.

          Stop blaming Square Enix for what they did, go to Crystal Dynamics if that was the case.

          Square did a great job with Hitman, & Sleeping Dogs on their side.

          Tomb Raider has taken a huge que from Uncharted, by some of it’s action plot points. HELL!! Rocksteady or Highmoon studios should snag it.

      While as that might be a good idea for Nintendo, it would probably be bad for everyone else. Platinum would probably have to give up more creative control on what they made, every other console would be left out, and PC gamers hope of one day seeing some of Platinums games running at 60-120fps with insane image quality would be gone forever.

      I stopped playing Darksiders 2 like shortly after I popped it in. The first bugged out on me towards the end of the game and I couldn’t finish

    Supposed that Platinum Games actually got to purchase the IP, I am intrigued as of how they would choose to continue the series. Would Platinum Games hire the writer of the previous titles to write the scenario for the next game or simply go at it their way (or the Kamiya way perhaps?)

      I think they’d handle the gameplay and work with the original writers and artists.

        It obviously works in MGR. A Platinum developed DS would be ace. Unfortunately it would aslo mean that all Vigil devs would lose their jobs, as Platinum are only interested in the IP, not the developer, for obvious reasons.

    Wow I never expected them to be interested! The combat in Darksiders 2 was pretty good but in PGs hand it could be even better!

      I’m still hoping that maybe Square Enix would jump in and does another unexpected rescue. I mean, a few years back, I never would’ve thought that True Crime: Hong Kong would ever see the light of days. At the times, ModNation Racers was the only game United Front Games ever got to published, so I still think there is better chance for Vigil Games, or at the very least the Darksiders Series… Wishful thinking, I know…
