Ninja Theory's new DmC arrives with 8s and 9s.

DmC Devil May Cry

Today is January 14, one day before the Ninja Theory-developed DmC Devil May Cry launches for PlayStation 3 an Xbox 360 in North America and Europe and three before it launches in Japan. The reviews are in, and critics seem to agree that the Enslaved and Heavenly Sword developer’s new take on the series is a good one.

Find the full list of scores below.

  • delon33

Didn’t IGN give two review scores? 8.9 for the 360 version and 8.5 for the PS3 version.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Thanks for that. Didn’t realize they gave two different scores.

      • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

So it seems NT still can’t handle UE3 on PS3, such a shame. I’ll pick it up someday but once it’s dropped in price or is re-released with the Vergil and possible future DLC. Right now my money’s flat and square on Platinum and MGR:R.

Nevertheless I’m happy to see a positive critical response after the venomous reception by “fans”.

        • Charlie

          Venemous is no understatement.

          • 浪黒雷 (ro-kurorai)

yea, they quite vocally expressed their dissent without actually having played the game. didn’t know what to make of them – scary or hilarious. probably the former ^^

            • Dean Winchester

pathetic self entitled whiners seems to fit their ilk.

    • ShinAsura

      Did get say why?

      • delon33

Performance issues. The cut scenes of the PS3 version has really bad frame rates.

        • ShinAsura

          Ugh

  • Kkdog4Sado

So glad I stuck with my prediction of this being better than people expected. Still must play it myself but I’m really glad these scores look like this.

    • Dean Winchester

      arrrrrrrrr downvote the non hater!

  • jeb

Early before launch reviews are always high, shitty ones come later.
From what I can remember, don’t companies put embargoes for reviews less than a certain number? from my past experience, the first bunch are the least reliable.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

They put embargos for all reviews. I’ve heard of some magazines sometimes getting exclusive first reviews if their score is like, 9 or higher, but in the online world, it’s pretty much everyone publishing at the same time, no matter the score.

      • jeb

I remember some games where a reviews with a certain score is allowed, I also remember a shot of some devs twitter account saying to hold a review because of the score, I’ll look for it again…

        • jeb

          Found it in a video.
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJh5E573vAU

          Its at 2:00.

          • Kkdog4Sado

But to be honest, the merit of the reviews won’t be held high. It’ll come from lesser known review sites which most people sadly won’t pay much attention to you know?

        • Dean Winchester

You seem to be desperately trying to discredit the good reviews DMC is getting.

Im guessing you jumped on the bandwagon of haters and was hoping this would fail b/c Capcom handed off the license to a western dev?
A western dev mind you that has a knack for great storytelling, solid graphics, great presentation and excellent gameplay.
They have breathed new lif into what was becoming a stale series and you would be wise to set aside the opinion the internet helped you form and instead try the game with a clear unbiased mindset.

I know thats too much to ask of anyone from this generation of gamers though.

          • jeb

Its more that I’m a lot more cynical of reviews these days, because in the past, their advice had gotten me a lot of bad purchases, so I find them for the most part very unreliable, especially the early high scorers.

I’ll admit that one of the reasons I’m cynical about the reviews in this game in particular, is that I really hated the controls of the demo, so when I hear its “surprisingly good” and you put that with my history with reviews it would be pretty hard to sell me a game with a score of 9/10(or any score for that matter)

            • Dean Winchester

Basing a purchase on others opinions is silly.
You would do well to form your own opinion about games by trying them first.
That said, a game getting this good of reviews must have dome something right deapite what the angry internet mob have been saying for months based soley on pics and a trailer.

              • Budgiecat

                Yeah

                They were bought

              • jeb

                That makes no sense.
I shouldn’t buy it because I shouldn’t listen to others but try it myself…well,if I don’t buy it then how the fuck do you expect me to try it?
Then you say listening to good reviews is a good sign but don’t listen or watch any videos or opinions that say otherwise.
They way your acting so defensively with this and other posts while not making any form of sense makes me wonder if you work in Ninja Theory.

                • Dean Winchester

You can…..oh I dont know, try the free fecking demo?
You could RedBox it, Gamefly it, Blockbuster it or try a friends copy?
Hell, wait a week, go to Gamestop and buy it used and treat their 7 day used game return policy as a free rental.

Nahhhhhhh. Instead lets hang out in comment sections where a game gets positive reviews and talk about how crappy the game actually must be based on NOT having played it.
                  Makes sense.

                  • jeb

Or, if your not interested in it, you could…you know, not bother.
And maybe if you see people going at the early reviews and have a bad experience with those, you might as well point that out so others may take that into consideration.
Only took this much comments because some goof ball was being over defensive about this game.

                    • Dean Winchester

If you arent interested in the game and refuse to try it….how about you shut the feck up and move along to another topic?
Nahhhhh, you arent interested in it so you must make sure to try and deter as many people as possible so as to help yourself feel a little less alone in your ignorant close minded asinine world.

Only took this many comments for us to uncover your true motives here b/c someone is bashing a game they admit to having no interest in or experience with.

Your opinion on this game and pretty much gaming is null and void due to your complete idiocy.

                      Good day.

                    • jeb

And your series of comments, not only to mine but,a lot of which are filled with insults and overreaction to anything that might hinting to negativity show how much of a whiny baby you are.

                      Calm down son.

And since you weren’t realizing this, I was mostly taking about reviews this whole time not the game, but it only takes any mention of the game to get you into a hissy fit.

I knew I shouldn’t give you this much attention, but I had time to kill,so I said to hell with it, that wore off…so were done here.

                    • Dean Winchester

                      I SAID GOOD DAY!

      • Dean Winchester

Sal….sorta off topic here but could you possibly consider a reviews round up for Ni No Kuni?

Game Informer already trolled it with a 7. Basically the female reviewer whined about the random encounters and battle system difficulty as well as the story not being mature enough for her.
You know, b/c graphically it looked like a Silent Hill game.
Oh wait…..no…it looks like a cartoon wonderland!
        Silly me.

  • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

From what I played it has goodgameplay, everything else is terribad.

    • Dean Winchester

Heres more haterade. Your glass is getting low.

      • jeb

Now that I have read a few of your posts, you seem to be overly defensive about this game.

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

        Thanks,i was nearly out.

        • Dean Winchester

          Good response.
          I chuckled.

    • Rezar

Everyone has been saying the same thing that played the game. The demo didn’t sell me on DmC and I am glad especially after hearing about a certain part of the game.

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

        What part you referring too?

        • Rezar

I won’t spoil it. I will just say something to do with the end is all.

          • Heavenly_King

I saw it on youtube, and all I have to say is that the action during cinematics sucks, and the moments that should be epic suck even more. The artstyle is quite interesting, but the character design is so horrible. It is like if I took a random generic dude off the street and say it is the king of demons. LMAO! You would think that in order to have that rank, he should look extremely bada$$ and powerful, but not in this game. And most of the last boss fight is jumping around. I really dont know WTH ninja theory was trying to do with this game. And I really dont know how this game is getting these kind of scores, it does not deserves them.

    • Heavenly_King

the gameplay compared to DMC1/3/4 sucks.

      • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

        True.

  • ShinAsura

Game looks solid, looking forward to it arriving tomorrow

    • Dean Winchester

Arrrr downvotes for you. How dare you not join in on the internet hate.
We are the hive mind. The uninformed ass’ of the web.
We hate for it gives us sustenance.

Arrrrr. Burn the Witch. Burn him! How dare he like DMC! Heritic! Purveyor of evil! Burrrrn!

  • bebestorm117

Good scores! I hope the sales are good Im going to buy the pc version because Im swayed by the 60fps

  • Haku_Luvs_You

Wow, looks great. I took a hit to the wallet recently (Senran Kagura DX) so It’ll have to wait :(

  • MrKappa

Heavenly Sword and Enslaved also got good scores and they were crappy games.
Had the misfortune of buying HS but I played the demo for Enslaved and DmC and it seems Ninja Theory is still putting out lackluster games and getting high marks for it.

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Both those had good gameplay and story though, but dmc…..nope

    • Dean Winchester

      I too despise great games!

      Lets all be cynical together!

      • MrKappa

You are not even trying anymore.

    • Kobracon

Certainly they were flawed, but they were like an interesting 3D movie. Kinda like Uncharted but with more flaws.

    • xMCXx

DMC looks really good artstyle-wise and the fighting is good, too.
      I wouldn’t call it lackluster.

  • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I’ve read some of the reviews. Interesting to say the least. I sorta expected the scores to be lower, mostly because of all the hate surrounding the game.

What do I think about the game? I haven’t played the final version, I’ve only played the Demo. I prefer to play games before I pass judgement.

I’m still going to wait and play this on PC. -

“The PC version will be compatible with both keyboard and mouse, Xbox 360® controller and all third party direct input controllers. Players can enjoy the game at 60 fps or even higher with no maximum limitation, creating a stunning visual experience for PC gamers.”

“Gamers that download DmC Devil May Cry via Steam will be able to take full advantage of features such as Cloud saving, achievements, friends support and leaderboards.”

    Sweet! =)

No GFWL support is refreshing. I’ve had GFWL crash my pc version of Arkham City countless times. =/

I’m not sure if I can afford to pick it up at launch though. Already invested $100 on Ni no Kuni this month. xD

    • Dean Winchester

Ive had GFWL crash my console game….said no console gamer ever.

      • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

True. I actually have Arkham City and finished it on PS3. I bought it on Steam to check out the Direct X 11 support the PC version offers.

        Your point is solid though.

I think tinkering with stuff, altering settings, yes, sometimes to fix crashes, etc. All of that is just part of PC gaming. Console gaming is more streamlined. and I think there will always be an audience that appreciates that.

Both sides have positives and negatives.

I suppose I appreciate both sides of the coin here. Which is why I find myself playing games on various platforms.

With that said, I tend to prefer playing games via console most of the time. Mostly on PlayStation, which is something I’ve been doing for years.

  • Prodigy-X

Still going to wait for a price drop.

  • Budgiecat

Proof that the world is coming to an end. How the Hell is this game getting good reviews the freakin demo showed that the game had glitches, control mapping was a cumbersome mess (two buttons did the same move! Why no lock on then??), dodge mechanic rewards you for STANDING STILL and doing NOTHING (lame replacement for the superior ROYAL GUARD), ran poorly at 30 fps, guns were a joke did NO damage, no lock on, SSS combo rating system was broken, and the dialogue is forced vulgarity for shock value, PS3 runs crappier due to Unreal Engine and Ninja Theory’s lack of proper programming…. its pathetic.
Oh well! Enjoy your doodoo pie losers!

    • Dean Winchester

Demo: typically an early playable version of a game that may or may not be fully representative of the final product.

    • xMCXx

      Reminds me of Skyrim.

  • Taiho

I’m pretty sure the only reason I’ll ever play this is to listen to the dialogue. I think its pretty funny. Even though it’s not normal Devil May Cry humor.
    Maybe I’m just immature….

    • Kobracon

The opposite actually. DMC dialogue has always been immature and campy which was the charm of it. But, from what i heard in the demo, DmC is better written.

  • Kobracon

Unsure about the rest, but I generally trust Destructoid and 1Up’s reviews. (Unless of course the reviewer for DmC on Destructoid was Jim Sterling then…..nvm)

In the end of course, different ppl have different tastes. Reviews are reviews. I’ll have to play for myself to fully judge it.

    edit: Oh….it IS by Jim Sterling….moving on…..

  • MosquitoLemon

I’ve read about 15 or 16 of the reviews, and it pretty much comes down to whether or not you liked the demo. The platforming bits bored me and the dialogue made me sick (I didn’t like the dialogue from the other DMC games either, but at least in those Dante stayed silent during the actual in-game sequences), while the combat is solid and the graphics and animations are very nice. I’ll pick it up on the cheap in a few years like I did with Ninja Gaiden Sigma (which I still haven’t completed – like DMC1, that game is really showing its age toward the end).

    • Dean Winchester

Ninja Gaiden is an awful series. After about 16 missions into Sigma I just couldnt stomach anymore of that horrible game and its incredibly boring design/gameplay and “story”.
GS gave me $1 for it and I feel like I ripped them off.

As for DMC, I found the demo to be quitefun and the dialogue to me was pretty funny.

  • Heavenly_King

I can not believe these scores, the demo sucks, and the all the gameplay and walkthrough videos are so meh, that at most this game should get a 7.

I think that definitely Capcom is paying for the reviews.

    • DarthBrian

Or that journalists are casual gamers who have never played a DMC game before in their life.

  • PrinceHeir

    ehh it’s an okay game.

just like Lords of Shadows, it’s not really a DMC game.

anyways hope you enjoy the game :P

  • MosquitoLemon

Just watched a fantastic review for the game: http://angryjoeshow.com/2013/01/dmc-devil-may-cry-angry-review/

I don’t typically like Angry Joe, and I think he was way too lenient on the game given the content of his review, but there is a lot of substance there. I like the frank honesty about the characters and Devil Trigger, something I didn’t see in any of the 15 reviews I read.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I thought it was a good review too.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I thought it was a good review too.
