Atlus trademarks P Studio [Update]

Is Atlus forming a new studio for Team Persona?

January 11, 2013 / 10:22 PM EDT / (@salromano)

Index Corporation, the parent company behind Persona and Shin Megami Tensei developer Atlus, has trademarked the name “P Studio” in Japan.

The trademark was filed on October 19, 2012 for use with video games. The logo attached right was included with the application.

Considering the name, it’s possible Atlus is forming a studio built of the team behind the Persona series, or “Team Persona,” as they’re often dubbed. The team’s last original game was Catherine for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. And this year, they released an enhanced port of Persona 4 for PlayStation Vita called Persona 4 Golden. They’re currently developing Persona 5.

Thanks, Siliconera.

Update 11:30 p.m.: As pointed out by Eclipse in the comments, it looks like Atlus secretly formed this studio a while back—even before the trademark was filed. Just take a look at the back of the Persona 4 Arena box.

Persona studio confirmed then?

Something about that logo feels awfully familiar…

    • Eclipse

Do you happen to have P4 Arena?
If so, look behind the box. ;)

Thanks for this. Updated the post.

Also on the back of P4G, so it seems it really is a studio for the Persona team. One way to find out for sure though is to check the back of Soul Hackers when that comes out here. Since it’s a SMT title and not a Persona title it would not carry that logo.

        • Eclipse

That’s odd, my JP copy of P4G doesn’t have that logo, yet the localized version does? Also, my copy of Soul Hackers doesn’t have the logo, so you just might be right about that.

          • Sevyne

Yeah, localized version has it. My guess is that P Studio was established in the mid-summer and that was after P4G released in Japan, but before P4 Arena.

      • Bloodios

Thanks for reminding me. I knew I saw that somewhere before… but since it didn’t really have a great presence so the whole thing sorta just slipped my mind…

I’m happy to hear this. Love these guys so much <3

    • PrinceHeir

is that Senran Kagura avatar O___O

have i seen you before?? :D

      • Eclipse

Nope! It’s my favorite character from Kampfer.
Maybe you have ~ I remember seeing you back at Andriasang.

And I think I’ve left far too many comments in this article… >_<

        • PrinceHeir

          ahh yeah i remember you!!!

your the one with the Index character avatar right? :P

          lol it’s okay ^^

  • PrinceHeir

as much as i love Persona series, can we get a SMT team!!!!

    very excited for this!!!

    • Pyrofrost

Seems like the SMT team is more, whoever Atlus decides to pull in at the moment. :p
Well that’s the way I see it, with all the experimentation being done on SMT IV, which I certainly don’t mind. I wish more companies would do risky business and change things up.

      • PrinceHeir

while it’s great way, i don’t like the direction of SMT IV :(

i don’t know, it’s probably because it’s not more on the style of Digital Devil Saga, Nocturne or Devil Summoner.

but it’s probably the art style.

still it’s been awhile since we have a SMT at all(even if you count Strange Journey)

        get hype!!!

        • Pyrofrost

I don’t mind the art of SMT IV, it looks good in my opinion.
I would just say it doesn’t really fit. However, I probably only feel that way because I have been conditioned to the original designs.
I am also a guy that welcomes change though. This gen has been bland as fuck overall, because everyone is sticking to the sure thing. I’m rambling now though :p

          • PrinceHeir

well it’s nice to have some change too.

but i do really wish for Kaneko art T__T

he’s been quite being neglected alot by Atlus.

when’s the last time he designed a character?? :(

            • Pyrofrost

Hasn’t been too many new games ago actually, Strange Journey.
Who knows what’s really going on though :p

              • HeatPhoenix

Strange Journey was really something, too bad it was a pretty lowkey release running on the etrian odyssey engine. They’re really turning down the valve on the main Shin Megami Tensei and the main spin-off. I guess they prefer the returns from the Persona games. …which I can imagine.

                • Pyrofrost

“They’re really turning down the valve on the main Shin Megami Tensei and the main spin-off.”

Can you explain what you meant by that Heat? I really don’t understand, so it’s hard for me to properly respond.

                  • HeatPhoenix

Well, compared to Devil Summoner or Digital Devil Saga Strange Journey is a spin-off that was much less of an investment than those PS2 games. Especially since there hasn’t even been a HD SMT even though we’ve been in this HD generation for about 6 years.

                    • Pyrofrost

Yeah, there is the issue of the JRPG market taking a HUGE turn to portable gaming, and the Japanese market being the primary target for these devs. Another words, the desires of the Japanese market comes first…not the gaijin market :p

I’d say the shift to portables also has to with the difference in cost. The PS3 costs so much more to develop for than the PS2 and the hardware is a bitch to work with.
If anything, I say the cost on the 3DS and PSV would be more comparable to the investment on the PS2. The hardware is also much easier to work with, from whats been said
The PSV also has the resolution to give us an HD MegaTen game, I don’t know if the 3DS does though.

                    • HeatPhoenix

Haha, well, the 3DS’ resolution is ridiculously tiny. I’m just thinking that they really let the SMT brand go since the PS2 days. How can you maintain a franchises if you don’t release games. A new Devil Summoner: Raidou game is not feasible after all of these years, there’s literally no brand recognition or anything. I realize the pitfalls of developing in HD and Nintendo is quite the clever company to have stretched Pokémon in 2D for this long (for example), but you have to evolve at SOME point… or not.

                    • Pyrofrost

Almost a decade passed between Soul Hackers and the first Raidou game though. So anything is possible, I would guess.
What we’ve had though, are a shitload of remakes and actually 4 new games I can think of over the entire brand since DS2 on PS2.
                      SJ, DS 1 and 2, and P4A

So I guess we could say, time will tell. I believe their home console development will be done VERY sparingly though. As they have found much success in going portable…though sales, R&D cost and time, and etc.
A company makes more money per portable game sold, than per console game.

                    • HeatPhoenix

You’re right about that, but 3 of those were portable games and the scope of P4A is in my opinion… questionable…
So I feel they need to step it up again.

                    • Pyrofrost

My opinion on P4A was that Atlus was attempting to spread out the fan base. However, I’m not sure if spreading it out to the FGC is going to turn them into Persona fans.
Two really good things I can give to P4A is:

#1 they allowed ASW to handle the development end of it as a fighter. They really couldn’t have made a better choice there. While I’m not a big fan of fighters, and I honestly suck at them; ASW makes the best fighters in existence in my opinion.

#2 The writing of the story I personally found very good and emotionally moving. Personally, if a story can force me to feel various emotions, the writer has done his job. The list of games that can do this for me is short.

I just personally feel that there hasn’t been enough focus on SMT for a while. So I am really looking forward to seeing what comes of SMT IV and how it turns out. They are doing a bit of experimentation and making some changes, which I don’t mind them doing. I know a lot of people seem to have ill feelings about it; however, I will reserve my judgement until I actually play it.

                    • HeatPhoenix

I should say up front that I don’t like ASW and feel that their games are lacking in several aspects. So, I shouldn’t judge anything regarding their games. But if they keep going like this, they’re going to oversaturate Persona. But we’ll see what happens.

Even though I feel taking away Kaneko and Meguro is crippling their own product I’m still extremely hyped and have faith in the team that is working on this game from what we’ve seen.

            • Pyrofrost

Forget my previous post Prince :p
I forgot about the article I am posting here.
Kaneko is responsible for the scenario on SMT IV and they are also keeping lots of his demon/monster designs.

                cool :D

but we have yet to see a design from him, hopefully in the coming months :D

                also no Meguro?? :(

                P5??

                • Pyrofrost

Meguro is involved in Persona 5 at this time, which is in full production and has been for a while. I’m expecting a pretty big game, also it is being developed on a new internal engine.

              • HeatPhoenix

That article implies the original scenario staples and demon designs from other games, not new ones (on either accounts) for this game.

        • ddsfan2

Can’t say much, other than that I agree. The production values on most of their recent releases are significantly lower than their PS2 games from almost a decade ago, except for Catherine of course.

On the other hand, the quality of their games still seems to be high quality, so I can only complain so much.

I’m down for more games in the vein of DDS any day of the week though…

  • Prodigy-X

    Probably is a Persona Studio.

  • HeatPhoenix

if there’s a team behind the “Persona series”… what happens to the people who worked on both Megami Ibunroku AND Shin Megami Tensei…?

    • Pyrofrost

I would guess they will all just continue with business as usual.

It has been known that there is a dedicated team for years now. That term was being thrown around before and during Catherine’s announcement.
There is almost a 100% chance that this studio has been created in name only. Due to the fact that Persona has become such a huge thing, this will make things easier to manage.

      • HeatPhoenix

If I were king of Atlus I would’ve called it “Megami Studio”… alas, I am a mere peasant.

        • Pyrofrost

          You have my vote ヽ(^Д^)ノ

          • HeatPhoenix

Thank you, wait, am I kinda a king now since I have a follower?

            • Pyrofrost

Haha, whichever makes you feel best mate ;)

  • Kobracon

Sweet! They deserve a team the credit coz their doing great! Can’t wait for P5!

  • MosquitoLemon

The same thing happened with my favorite development team. Genki formed the ‘Genki Racing Project’, which was just a new branding for the people that had made all their racing games in the past. They only made two games under that moniker before going out of business.

  • orenji

    yay! Persona 5
