Following its May 7, 2013 release date announcement at the Video Game Awards on Friday, Sony has revealed the final box art and pre-order bonuses for Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us.

Consumers who pre-order the game will receive the “Sights and Sounds Pack,” which includes the official game soundtrack, a PlayStation 3 dynamic theme, and PlayStation Network avatars of “Winter Joel” and “Winter Ellie.”

If you pre-order at GameStop, you’ll get the “Survival Pack” in addition to the “Sights and Sound Pack.” This includes bonus multiplayer experience points, a multiplayer melee attack boost, extra in-game starting cash, special customizable multiplayer character items, and two special bonus skins for Joel and Ellie unlocked after you complete the single-player campaign.

Naughty Dog said it will talk more about the game’s multiplayer at a later date.

If you missed Friday’s trailer, catch it again below. See the final box art and pre-order promotional material at the gallery.

They let multiplayer be announced through the pre-order bonuses? Say whaaaaat? They debunked co-op, but they certainly never said we wouldn’t see multiplayer. Cool stuff, Naughty Dog. Cool stuff.

Who voted me down? Do people on this site not understand being facetious? Seriously. That’s a pro PS3 and ND comment, sheesh, frigging noobs.

The box art looks amazing, can’t wait to see the multiplayer.

Personally, I rather Naughty Dog keeps the game single-player-only and focuses on tweaking every nook and cranny of every scene, under any scenario and makes sure that the game looks and plays absolutely the best it could be. For me, assuring a meaningful single-player campaign is better than risking the implementation of a distasteful multiplayer mode… Well, I’ll wait and see if it’ll appeal to me…

The box art is lovely, by the way.

They handled MP exemplary in U2 (+3). Only 2 Trophies for dipping in, absolutely no grinding required, and separate from SP. I couldn’t care less about MP, just playing the minimum required to get the MP trophies but I am certain that ND won’t compromise SP in anyway for MP’s sake.

They single-handedly introduced story and character driven SP gaming to this generation of consoles. There can be an argument made for NT and Heavenly Sword being the first of this generation but I’ll leave that up for debate.

TLOU looks like their finest game yet (I guess they’re pushing the hardware to the absolute limit; c.f. Rare’s level of quality in Perfect Dark on N64). So I would not worry about the MP compromising SP in any way.
Who knows, maybe you’ll even end up liking it ;)

Box art looking mightily sexy there. I’ve said it once already and I’ll gladly repeat it: Should this be the Swan Song year for PS3 and 360 then they will certainly go out with a BOOM!

    Bioshock Infinite
    GTAV
    Gears Judgment
    Beyond
    The last of Us

    The Last Guardian

What better way to send our trusty consoles off in style. Plus, some Japanese developers will certainly cling onto PS3 development for a while. Exciting times indeed.

I certainly hope that Rock Star is still clinging on the development of Agent… It is still the highest ranked on the PS3′s list of potential vaporware exclusives.

For all those that tried to watch the trailer last night with no success — it should work now. Viacom issues copyright claims on just about everything uploaded to YouTube. We covered it, though, and it’s working fine now.

I have not seen any multiplayer gameplay yet.

  • Ramza Beoulve

    yes this is nice
hope multiplayer is good but i just want to play single player XD

It’s a shame you can’t choose to play as Ellie and let Joel be the AI partner, that’d make it an insta-pre order if you could.

    • KingOptimusOrigins111

It wouldn’t be right having a 13 or 14 year old girl die every time the AI kills you. I think they could actually get sued for even doing that.

      • KurisuMakise

Isn’t it possible for Ellie to be defeated as an AI partner as it is? Though I’m sure they do need to be careful about her representation, I don’t think that’d be enough to bar her from being playable =(
