Wii U will not have system-wide achievements

"They are up to the developers to include," says 5th Cell.

Nintendo’s Wii U will not have its own equivalent to the Achievements and Trophy systems, according to Scribblenauts Unlimited developer 5th Cell. At least, not system-wide accomplishments.

“There are no Wii U accomplishments that are system wide,” said the studio’s Jeremiah Slaczka in a NeoGAF post.

“They are up to the developers to include or not include. Scribblenauts Unlimited loosely has them in the form of “Global Starite Shards” which is like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren’t area specific.”

Wii U will launch next Sunday, November 18 in North America.

Fail! Another reason to have the cønsole offline. I imagined them scoring with mooshrooms, flowers and Stars.

  • MrKappa

I’m a bit of a trophy whore so I guess I won’t be getting multiplat games for the Wii U now.

    • Gigus

Just buying the consoles for the exclusives!  Been doing that for all three systems

      • http://www.facebook.com/wtfits.gardner Cat Flames

Yeah If I was going to get one I would get it for 1st party and exclusives only. Do not expect the next big multi plat game for next gen consoles on Wii U but hey.. you will get other IPs that might never show up on PS4 and 720.

  • AdamBoy64

No worries here. I never got into acheivements / trophies.

I kind of figured people would be screaming blood for Nintendo not including this.

I actually kinda like how they’re still trying to differentiate themselves. (even if they have to region lock the Wii-U to do so.)

    Go them. (not really.)

  • XypherCode

Not now but maybe in the future via an update. Like it says in that NeoGAF post the PS3 didn’t have trophies at launch. Maybe Nintendo might consider it in the near future.

    • Solomon_Kano

True, it’s certainly not out of the question. I mean, we’re already seeing integral features being patched in on launch day, so it’s not unbelievable that this feature could come later.

Still, I think Nintendo’s going to stand by its exclusion. They’ve had this whole gen to see that it was something that had spread to just about every platform out there and still chose to ignore it in their upcoming system. That tells me it’s something they looked at and didn’t want to include. You don’t overlook something as ubiquitous as that. Unless, of course, Nintendo’s designers only play Nintendo games. Which would be pretty surprising.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TB4QLJ6BY7EMMJBZUCSG3CHJCI pen

They overlooked HD for the Wii
They overlooked DVD playback for the Wii
They overlooked multi-region capability for the Wii, 3DS AND Wii-U
They overlooked that some Zelda fans may want the option to use a standard controller and not motion control.
And now they’ve overlooked a gamer score system – again. They ranted about making their gaming experience more social, how do you leave out the most obvious option to compare and compete for accomplishments with friends? Doesn’t make sense, Nintendo is just being stubborn.

    • http://www.facebook.com/wtfits.gardner Cat Flames

maybe but I doubt it. Nintendo never listings.

  • xMCXx

    Step up your game, Nintendo.
    It’s not 1986, anymore.

  • Duc PC-QB

    Preorder cancelled.

    Anyone get the joke  ?

  • Solomon_Kano

They aren’t the biggest deal to me, but I can’t imagine why they would opt not to include a system-wide achievement deal. It just doesn’t really make sense. It’s a thing with MS. It’s a thing with Sony. It’s even a thing on PC via Steam. It’s a thing on iOS with Game Center.

I get that Nintendo likes to be different, but usually they’re different in a creative sense. There’s nothing creative about ignoring an element that’s available on literally every other modern platform. That’s just an attempt at individualism for the sheer sake of appearing apart from the rest, it doesn’t make the product better. I don’t particularly mind so it doesn’t make it any worse in my eyes, but it’s a pointless exclusion that I can see a number of people getting up in arms about.

    • DrForbidden

I don’t care about trophies/achievements either, but I can see how not getting with the In crowd might make the console undesireable to a portion of the consumer base. But then that’s Nintendo’s game this generation: thumbing their noses at the various conventions and expectations…

      • Solomon_Kano

I would hope that people don’t skip entire systems for such a small feature, but I can certainly see that being one less bullet point for a segment of potential buyers.

Between their entire approach to online this gen and now skipping on achievements, Nintendo’s ignoring of convention is starting to feel morel like pretension than their usual creativity. Their seems to be this feel of “we can get away with it because we’re Nintendo”. I love them, but that’s just stupid.

Could just be that they find it needless and a waste of time and effort. I know I do.

      • Solomon_Kano

Eh, I might be able to see it that way if it weren’t a feature that all multiplatform games already support since they have to for PS360 and most do support for PC via Steam. To what end do you exclude that feature? It’s not like they were making extra work for devs who were bringing games to their system.

It doesn’t bother me to not have them, but I can’t see any logical reason to exclude them. “We felt like being different” is all that it sounds like.

“it doesn’t make the product better”
In my opinion this does make the product way better
I think trophies/achievements (and DLCs) are the biggest crap ever invented

      • Solomon_Kano

Except not having trophies and achievements is how all gaming was prior to this generation. Simply not changing something doesn’t make it better. If you prefer your games without them, then cool, but that’s not an improvement to the product.

    Boooo.
But will still get it for Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden 3 and other upcoming releases.

Edit: I read it has screenshotting option, which is awesome. Pretty good trade. And to Cat Flames I mean Bayonetta 2 and Ninja Gaiden 3 looks better in WiiU.

    • http://www.facebook.com/wtfits.gardner Cat Flames

You can play does on current gen consoles O_O

Did you just subtitute “those” with “does”?

Achievements/trophies are for bragging rights anyways… I don’t find much use for it even with MS’s practices…

good system, alot of devs hate being forced to put them in

  • http://www.facebook.com/queef.huffer Alex Sankowich

Achievements are encouraging, but they’re not mandatory.  I’m glad Nintendo is in the same mindset I am about brats getting up to 100,000 achievement points in a week… it’s just stupid… stupid, stupid, stupid… and no one gives a shit about your e-penis.

     Good!

  • dart2087

The hardcore players buy lots of games for achievements in most cases.

  • LordKaiser

I wanted to get mushrooms and flowers to get Stars. Stars are obtained by getting all the game’s mushrooms and flowers.

  • http://theadventuresofjejun.blogspot.com/ Jejun

I’m indifferent toward achievements, so this news doesn’t worry me, although I know a couple of people who tend to be obsessed with the things that I can see being a little annoyed by this.

  • gold163

Good. I always thought it was ridiculous how Microsoft pretty much FORCES every developer to include a minimum criteria of achievements in their game.

    • Locksus

Sony does the same, you know. I always thought achievements were kind of useless but it’s a nice way to come back to a game and finish it 100%. Only few games make me want to do that. Dark Souls, Dishonored, Deus Ex HR + some others.

      • gold163

I don’t mind achievements but making them a prerequisite to be able to sell your game is silly.

        • Locksus

Well, I wouldn’t buy a game because of achievements. I buy a game if it looks good and worth the price that’s asked for it.

          ….

Okay, I admit. I picked up Alone in the Dark for 5 euros for easy gamerscore.

fantastic, devs hate the mandatory system

  • PrinceHeir

i actually prefer in game achievements instead of a system wide instead.

i actually hope more the in-game achievements translates to more secret costumes and the like
