PlayStation 3 sales reach 70 million

And PlayStation Move sales reach 15 million.

November 16, 2012 / 01:12 AM EDT / (@salromano)

As of November 4, PlayStation 3 sales have reached 70 million units worldwide, Sony Computer Entertainment has annnounced. And as of November 11, PlayStation Move controllers have surpassed 15 million units.

PlayStation 3 was first launched in November 2006, accounting sales for just under six years. This September, Sony introduced a new, ‘super slim’ PlayStation 3 model, which has a reduced volume and weight of more than 50 percent compared to the original PlayStation 3 model, and 25 and 20 percent compared to the 2009-launched slim model.

Do we know how this compares to 360 and Wii worldwide sales?

    • kiri25

360 sells if u ask me are not very reliable since many people bought a second, third, or even fourth 360 during its first few years due to the RROD thus busting it’s system sells until they finally extended the warranty.

      • cid

doesn’t matter its still consider a sell, regardless whether they bought another one  due to system failures or just enjoyed the heck out of it its still a sale

        • Sevyne

I hate to agree with you on that, but I have to. A sale is a sale even if it’s some sucker who will buy 3 360s because they couldn’t build them to last. I know I wasn’t one of those suckers. Mine got the red ring and that was the last I ever played on a 360.

If my PS3 ever died though I’d probably get another one, because at least my old fat PS3 has lasted pretty much this entire gen. Saying that with pride makes console quality these days seem rather grim though when I have a Sega Master System sitting right next to it that still works lol.

        • kiri25

Well tbh system sells wont tell you anything about which system is in the most households. These sales don’t take into consideration system failures, trade ins or used system sales. So it’s quite possible the PS3 could be in more households than 360′s despite what the charts say or vise versa, tho with the lack of games on 360 I figure most would’ve been traded in or collecting dust.

          • cid

true its the same in movies and music, sales doesn’t really tell if a system or anything is really of good quality

    • fireemblembeast

Congrats on your 300th comment! :p I wonder if you noticed? XD
(As for your question, idk, sorry)

      • DarthBrian

I did not notice. Thanks for the heads up. :p

But how did you notice? Are you stalking me? :O

I have a tendency to click people’s icons to see their profiles out of boredom. I tend to look at mine, as well.

VGChartz isn’t reliable when it comes to hardware sales.

        • DrForbidden

All online sources have to be taken with a grain of salt, but unless you can provide a more reliable source, VGChartz will have to do.

          • KingOptimusOrigins111

Please do not listen to VGChartz and just wait till Microsoft or Sony says something. Just like Sony did by releasing this information on PS3 selling 70 million.

            • DrForbidden

Microsoft is not going to tell you their sales numbers on demand. They’ll tell you when they feel like it, which could be a year from now, and by then the numbers for PS3 would have changed, and you will have to wait for  Sony to say something to make up for it, in addition to Nintendo. And this will just go on and on.

Also, companies often fudge or inflate their sales numbers slightly anyway, so they are not 100% trustworthy as you seem to think they are. By all means, listen to what they say, but take everything with a grain of salt and don’t dismiss third party sources so offhandedly in favour of official sources unless you have hard evidence either way.

              • KingOptimusOrigins111

I did not say anywhere in my statement about demanding sales figures. I said wait until they say something. Why would you take website figures over company who is selling the product and knows the actual numbers.

You can’t just come out of the clear blue and be like “this website said they sold this actual amount.” If Sony says they reached 70 million PS3 sold them that’s how much it sold regardless what a website said even though they don’t even have a relationship with Sony to find out actual number.

                • DrForbidden

And when will Microsoft and Nintendo say something? How can you compare Xbox sales figures from 2008, Wii sales figures from 2010, and PS3 sales figures from 2012? Companies will not say anything until it can make them look good.

As I have repeatedly pointed out, I am not saying VGChartz is flawless, but they DO at least make some effort in coming up with the numbers from various sales sources. They’re not some random blogger from Pakistan.

As I have ALSO pointed out, companies inflate their sales numbers, or fudge the numbers so trusting them 100% is moronic.

VGC lists 68.3 million while Sony says 70 million. Are those numbers far off? VGC’s sources may be slightly slower, or Sony may be using total number shipped instead of total sold. How would you know? How would Sony know how many PS3s are sitting in stores worldwide versus the number actually bought by consumers? What are Sony’s internal standards and protocols on rounding up sales numbers? Why are you adamant that Sony’s numbers are irrefutable and accurate?

All I’m saying is to take in data from various sources, but don’t trust any one source 100% to the exclusion of all other sources. If you can’t or refuse to get this point, there is no reason to have a discussion. Have a nice weekend.

                  • KingOptimusOrigins111

Sony says the PS3 is 70 million that is that because in the end its the company that knows how much it sold. For all we know they could have sold 70.2 million and called that 70 million. VGChartz doesn’t know the exact number like Sony knows. Why because again they don’t have anyway of getting the exact number like Sony can.

But I’m done because you don’t seem to understand what I’m telling you which is VGChartz is a website that guess the amount, Sony is the company that knows the exact amount.

                    • DrForbidden

Sorry to disappoint you, I understand perfectly what you are saying, but YOU don’t seem to understand what I am saying, or you are just refusing to acknowledge it.

First of all, you are absolutely wrong to say Sony knows the exact amount of sales. How does Sony define a sale? Is a sale to retailers and distributors a sale, or is a sale to a consumer a sale? How does Sony know how many PS3s are sitting in retailer’s stores and warehouses, versus the number they sold? Even if they get such information, how accurate and up-to-date are their numbers, considering there are millions of stores selling PS3s globally? Does it not make more sense that Sony is counting the number they shipped instead of the actual numbers bought by consumers?

What about Sony’s policy on reporting numbers? Perhaps  Sony only sold 69.6 million and reported it as 70 million. How do their sales or statistics teams calculate the numbers? What assumptions do they make, and are there inherent biases in their assumptions?

I don’t know these things, and despite all your fanboy bluster, NEITHER DO YOU. THAT is why I think your insistence on taking Sony’s numbers as irrefutably accurate is a fallacy.

Sony is a corporation. They will reveal what is in their interest in revealing. And they are not above releasing misleading information in corporate speak for their own benefit. Going by your logic, we should all just take at face value everything pharmaceutical companies say about their drugs and products, and ignore everything the FDA, WHO, Surgeon General, and other independent researchers and experts say, because it is the pharmaceutical companies that absolutely know everything about their product. Not that they would ever withhold information for their profits or anything, right?

But, yeah, whatever floats your boat, man.

              • Sevyne

Microsoft already DID announce their numbers recently. They hit 70 million last month…

                • DrForbidden

It’s nice when things coalesce by chance, but it doesn’t always happen.

        • http://twitter.com/gamesreflexoes Celebrinando

VGChartz is the best that we have, despite Sony and Micro$oft. You should respect them, because they do a great job, not perfect, but the best on the market.

      • fireemblembeast

Aren’t those bar sizes off…? I see 97 mil for wii and 22.3 mil for 3DS but the bar heights are the same. Also what do those percentages mean…?

        • DrForbidden

I think those are supposed to be two different charts. One for home and one for handhelds. The highest number is always the maximum bar.

Yeah, I thought the representation was confusing at first too.

          • fireemblembeast

Oh, I see, thanks. There is a bigger gap between handheld and console, now that I look at it again…

    • Sevyne

360 hit 70 million about 1 month ago, but also came out 1 year before the PS3.

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

That’s surprising considering the 360 just reached 70 million just a month ago and how the PS3 managed to catch up despite the 1 year delay…

    • http://twitter.com/trogdor696 trogdor696

wii is well past 100 mil now

  • fireemblembeast

No wonder, with so many good games on Sony systems lately. :)

  • KingOptimusOrigins111

Good Job Sony PlayStation. I hope they surpass the 360 by now.

  • zakou

    70,000,000 O_O  imagine this 70M x 100 for profit XD

    • MosquitoLemon

Yeah, but that was the whole reason Sony hasn’t been doing well. The majority of those 70m have been sold at a big loss.

  • EspadaKiller

Very nice numbers! Wonder when will it hit 100mil? 2 more years perhaps?

  • techisoba

    lmfao vgchartz sales
    anyways…
60-75% sales in asia of 360 and wii are mostly modded (i know bcuz a friend of mine back in my country runs a mod shop service and a friend in singapore runs one too who told me that he ships and market it to china/hongkong and sell it on their black flea market for electronics), dont even get me started on euro, n.america, s.america, on how many mod service providers are there for both consoles, i got a modded wii and 360 and i havnt been banned online or service, new game comes out wait for 1week *bam!* disc iso ready to burn and play for free offline and online, just waiting for 4 more days until black ops 2 iso comes out, and thats why the wii and 360 got that much sales!

    • holly

So why are the most multiplat games selling better on the box?

      • dead_bones

Because PS3 has far more exclusives compared to the 360. PS3 users have way more options to chose from than 360 users who really only have Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable, and the multiplats.

        • holly

So why Gears 3 alone outsold all Sony exclusives combined in 2011?

          • kiri25

Ok 1st off uncharted 3 did 3.8million in sells in its first night, it took gears 3 a full week to hit the 3 million mark.

Second gears was released in sept. so of course it sells would be higher seeing as its been out longer. (uncharted 3 released in nov)

And third with uncharted sells so high gears 3 sells did not out sell all of sony exclusives combined for 2011 considering that LBP2 and uncharted 3 were released in 2011.

          • KingOptimusOrigins111

What are you smoking? If you add up all the sales of the PS3 exclusives in 2011 Uncharted, inFAMOUS, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Socom, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Yakuza 4, MLB The Show, MotorStorm Apocalypse, The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Disgaea 4, & more all them combined outsold Gears 3, Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, and Forza 4 combined.

            • kiri25

Well I don’t consider disgaea or yakuza exclusive since they are not 1st party, but yes holly comment about gears made no sense to me either.

      • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Could be a lot of reasons… Personally, I go with “NA market, which Xbox is dominating right now, is bigger than Europe and Japan combined”…

        • holly

Yeah thats right. But americans can also mod their console and pirate games. It’s just bs to say that something is selling much better because it’s hackable.

          • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Looking at America, there’s not much pirating to worry about since Gears of War 3 and Halo games managed to sell well in launch day… (Could have been meant as “shipped” though since it’s Microsoft announcing it)

If you’re looking at another country like Asia, then it’s a different story…

  • new_tradition

    *hugs phat 60GB BC PS3*

I bought PS because of Harvest Moon when I was 10 years old in 2003. I got a NES in 1996 it’s great played Contra and Battle City with my aunt, But it was PS that introduced me so many awesome RPG like Tactics Ogre, Suikoden, Star Ocean, etc and I began to love RPG. And I’ve been with Playstation ever since, got PS2 in 2006 for GTA San Andreas. PSP ini 2009 for Kingdom Hearts BBS and last year got my PS3 for FF Versus LOL. I’ll get my Vita in Chinese New Year next year.

I can’t frickin wait to see the reveal of PS4. It’s so exciting.

    • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

If it’s actually named PS4 that is… You do know what “4″ rhymes with, right??

      • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

I know but I’ll be pissed if they call it Orbis.

        • http://twitter.com/RaiuLyn Raiu

Then what do you call it??? Skip a generation and call it PS5???

          • Smashlampjaw

I think “Orbis” Is just a codename I don’t know though.

    • xMCXx

Maybe it won’t be called PS4, since the japanese don’t like that number ;D

      • holly

        What about PSIV?

        • xMCXx

           Ha, dunno. xD

PS Move is a huge success
