U.S., Canada, Brazil, and Mexico get it next week.

Sony has gone live with the second major overhaul to PlayStation 3′s PlayStation Store in Europe. The same update will go live in the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Mexico on Tuesday, October 23.

In a nutshell, the new PlayStation Store includes:

  • Hero Concept - as you scroll through the “What’s New” carousel, or any of the store’s new “Feature” categories, you’ll see a “Hero” on every page.
  • Feature Categories - whenever an item is “featured,” you’ll see it “above the line.” Anything above said line will have some sort of featured presentation style like a carousel. Anythng below the line will be a much more familiar experience to regular users of the PlayStation Store.
  • Unmixed Content - separate sections have been created under the “Games” category for PlayStation 3, PS Vita, and PSP, making finding content for each platform easier.
  • Sorting and Filtering - in any category, you can now filter the products being displayed in a number of different ways, including name, price range, game feature, accessory compatibility, release date, etc.
  • Smart Search - the store’s search functionality has been overhauled to “llow users to get to the content they were looking for without having to enter more than three or four characters.” As you enter each letter on the search screen, search results will begin to be listed, and your available letter choices will begin to eliminate depending on the content available on the store. To find LittleBigPlanet 2, for example, you’ll only need to enter “L-I-T.”
  • Top Rated - your star ratings will now drive a “Top Rated” chart.
  • Game Pages - brings together all of a games content in one page. On a LittleBigPlanet 2 page, for example, you’ll find the game’s platform, file size, release date, rating, as well as sections for its add-ons, playable demo, etc.

The new PlayStation Store is a 26mb download. Get it now.

Just a warning, all. The store’s terrrrribly slow right now. Still tuning up during launch, I take it.

Do I download this via system update?

Just go to the PlayStation Store on the PSN section of the XMB, and it will ask you to DL the new store.

      • Derpazu

Huh…just went there and saw the old store. Didn’t ask me to download anything.

        Guess I’ll try again later.

  • Marco Tinè

Still not available in Italy, unfortunately! :(

No update in Germany as well.

Looks like they also skipped the content update for today? Or is it just not visible because it’s still the old store? I wanted to get them DOA5 costumes today! :(

Not getting the DL prompt on my EU account. I guess it’s because PSN “knows” where I really am, hehe.

Oh well, can’t wait to check it out next week.

Actually, it looks like they’ve taken it down to fix launch problems. Once it’s back up you should be able to get it.

I’m in the US of A and I got it.

      • RedWolfe

Ah, I see. Will try again tomorrow (er…today).

It also amazes me how many people were quick to hate.

I’m diggin’ the new look and people should know by now that when you first launch a new site, application or whatever, it takes a day or two for the servers to adjust to the load.

The same thing happened when they switched from the first, web based store to the one we’ve been using for the last few years.

Update: While the updated store is still down in Europe, it is available in Australia. And for the most part it’s pretty fast (although, it could use improvement).

My impressions: It doesn’t load up quite as fast as the old store does. In fact, I’d say it takes about 3 or 4 more seconds to load up down because it seems to load up more like a game as opposed to an extension of the XMB. Not a HUGE issue for me but I could see how that would be a turn off for some (although, i’m optimistic it will get better in the future).

As for the store itself, the bottom line is: if you’re not a fan of metro, you won’t be a fan of the new store. The store does straight up feel like navigating the XBL marketplace. However, IMO, the amount of clicks it takes to get to what you’re looking for hasn’t changed and I think the categories are actually a bit more organized now, in general. The backgrounds and themes in the new store are also a bit easier on the eyes than the bright blue one in the old store (IMO).

I, personally, was indifferent in my choice of UI (metro vs psn) so I’m pretty satisfied with the new store but I’m sure some people won’t be happy with the change (after all, gamers hate change, right?)

I’m surprised there hasn’t been an update to this article. The store was a complete disaster so they pulled it and reverted back to the old store. Terrible load times, broken searches, failing to add funds and not reckgonising  PS+. I’m sure they will fix it but we now have to wait longer for our shiny new store.
