With the game set for release across PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in North America tomorrow, and next month for PC and Wii U, Ubisoft has released the launch trailer for Assassin’s Creed III. Watch it below.
I’m excited to pick up my copy of the game tomorrow.
I must admit, I’m still annoyed at the team responsible for marketing the game in america. They keep putting together material that makes it look like a pro america game. I don’t think we should get so offended when something places americans or things we did in the past, in a negative or questionable light.
It’s kinda silly with AC3, you are not playing as an american soldier or anything. I could go into more detail about the history of the time period, but I think I made my point.
I’ve been excited about this game for quite a while, and I’m very much looking forward to playing it this week. I’ve set aside some time off work for it. ^^
Isn’t that the point of marketing it in America; to make it appear to be a Pro American game? If you find that to be deceiving consumers, then that is understandable considering the game is about templars and assassins, with the American Revolution simply providing a backdrop. I don’t see how the American Revolution places America in a bad light, perhaps you could qualify that statement so that I may better understand it?
I assume the marketing in England is quite the opposite, with little to no promotions of red coats being slaughtered, which again is understandable, considering that may turn consumers away from the product.
Ultimately, I can’t wait to play this game, and hope we both enjoy it!
That’s just it. The marketing for the game outside of the US is different. I’ve been following the game for a long time, and this has been a fairly well documented problem with the american marketing of the game. It really started with the trailers showing Connor only killing red coats, like they were the only “bad guys” in the game. In the Assassin’s Journey trailer, the version released outside of the usa does show Connor killing bluecoats. It was removed from the NA trailer. (Other trailers have done the exact same thing.)
More info on that from my post in that article - http://gematsu.com/2012/10/assassins-creed-iii-an-assassins-journey-trailer#comment-671380708
So, no, the marketing outside of the usa shows Connor killing his enemies from both sides of the revolution. He doesn’t simply ally himself with one side or the other. It’s far more complicated than that, which it should be, considering this is an Assassins Creed game.
(Bit more on what I’m talking about - http://kotaku.com/5918810/can-americans-not-handle-the-sight-of-their-ancestors-being-killed-in-assassins-creed )
I don’t buy the excuses, that americans are offended or get upset seeing a video game character kill other americans. If so, people need to realize this is a video game. Alex Hutchinson, creative director on AC3 says it best. -
“That’ll go away once you play the game. The only real evidence is: ‘have the controller, have a copy of the game. ”
My problem with all of this is fairly simple to explain. Don’t try to sell the game as something else, something that it isn’t. I know I’m going to enjoy the game, the marketing team can’t fool me. I just want the trailers and stuff to show the actual game, not try and sell it as something else. (Or some Pro America thing.)
I guess the NA PR/marketing team did not want to get sued by offended “citizens” for showing a fictional character killing their great nation’s heroes. I can’t relate as I’m German but I observed the campaign for quite some time, similar to you, and came to the same conclusion. The big question remains whether the shipping game will be uncut in the states or whether content (the ability to attack or even kill Blue-coats) has been cut from the NA version.
I couldn’t care less. Getting AC3′s Complete Edition (with all DLC included) alongside AC3:L once I return to Germany in March and I will enjoy the heck out of it. The NA marketing of the game is kinda pathetic, if I may say so, as it suggests certain content won’t be included in the game. It’s plain cowardice or extremely nationalistic.
Tis’ true, but not going to argue with marketing team. It is what it is. Most Americans say they hate the Brits and view them as an evil rival, but nobody really knows why. Just look at the trailer for an example. The red coats are demonized for no particular reason other than they are red coats. They make it look like the red coats are the empire who destroyed the natives, when at the end of the day it’s the Americans who destroyed a whole civilization.
All the advertising and gameplay shows the main character fighting alongside the US armies against the British. Ironically, the main character is supposedly part Indian, and it is the British who fought in the War of 1812 with the Indians and tried to establish an Indian state in negotiations after the war.
It’s all just a bit of revisionist history, just like American’s trying to believe they won the War of 1812… a war which was declared by the USA and in which they gained no new territory.
Yeah, and the marketing team in america cutting out parts of trailers and stuff to do this bothers me. It’s misleading and in some ways false advertisement.
I kinda went into a bit more detail with my post below. You understand what my problem is with the marketing, not much more to say. It’s not stopping me from buying the game or anything, but at the end of the day, I just don’t like it.
Why can it not just be tomorrow already?!!
goodbye outside world
