2K Games and Firaxis announced toay that XCOM: Enemy Unknown, its upcoming re-imagining of the 1994 MS-DOS and Amiga title, will feature a one-versus-one deathmatch online multiplayer mode.
“Throughout the history of the XCOM series, players have acted as the world’s last hope against the alien invasion,” said Jake Solomon, lead designer of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. “With the multiplayer mode in XCOM: Enemy Unknown, gamers can finally find out what it’s like to command alien units and unleash extraterrestrial destruction on Planet Earth or defend it with a squad of XCOM soldiers and alien allies.”
Here’s what you need to know about Deathmatch:
- It is a one-on-one battle.
- It is not tied to the narrative in any way.
- Players assemble a squad of six, which can comprise of bolth humans and aliens.
- Soldiers can be outfitted with “dozens” of armor types, weapons, items, and class-based abilities for “thousands” of possible loadout combinations.
- Matches can be modified by point limit or time limit per turn.
- The fog of war will conceal your enemy’s units until you encounter them on the battlefield.
If you pre-order the game, you’ll gain access to the “Elite Soldier Pack,” which offers “top-of-the-line soldier” customization features for yor soldiers, including Soldier Deco packs, complete color customization, and a classic XCOM soldier, flat top.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is due for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC worldwide on October 12.
