Whee! nice photoshop skills, Sal ;D
Is anyone here interested in playing GeoW3 with me sometime?
Oh, and feel free to add me on XBL (Hurlumi) or PSN (Locksus). I don’t have that many games on PS3 that have multiplayer or co-op, unfortunately.

    • Malcolm Reynolds

      Locksus,
I have been wanting to Co-Op RE5 Gold campaign with someone as I have yet to play it.
I have the PS3 version. You down?

      • Locksus

Hmm, I’m quite sure I saw it at my local store today for mere 20 euros. I think I can pick it up this week. I’ll let you know when/if I get my hands on it :)

        • Malcolm Reynolds

          Dude that would be great.
Look for a friend request on PSN from Dimsum. Thats me!

          • Locksus

Sure thing :) I’ll add you tomorrow or the day after tomorrow as I’m going to visit my relatives tomorrow so I’m not sure if I have the time tomorrow (Lol I used the word ‘tomorrow’ too many times) :P

      • Kobracon

I got the gold edition. I could play with ya if ya want, Malcolm. I may be a little OP though since I finished the game twice :P

        • Malcolm Reynolds

          I appreciate the offer Kobracon!
Shoot me a friend request on PSN and I’ll def add u.
Just let me know in the message its you if you handle is different from Kobracon so I know its you.

          Dimsum is my PSN name.
If you have finished the game twice you’ll probably hate playin with a noob.

          • Kobracon

PSN name is KobraCondor. Someone jacked my user name >:(

And don’t worry bout being a noob. My first playthrough was on Easy :P

    • Acidicsam

      Wait, what’s GeoW 3? I haven’t seen that before…

      • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Gears of War 3. GeoW 3 is commonly used as the abbreviation as not to confuse it with God of War 3, or GoW3.

        • Acidicsam

Ah. That’s what I thought. Most of the places I frequent just use GoW3. GeoW3 does make more sense.

  • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

Yes, indeedy. Nice work on the OF image, Sal. =)

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Can’t give me all the credit. It was @Zero’s idea, everyone!

      • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I made an awful paint image of it before Sal did cool stuff with it in photoshop. True story! =)

  • xMCXx

Gematsu Guy for Persona 4: Arena!

  • manasword0

I know it has been getting a lot of traction in Japan and from imports. But how is Anarchy Reigns? I have it pre-ordered but is it worth keeping?

    • Taiho

I think Anarchy Reigns is one of the funnest games this year so far. Sure it isn’t perfect… and there is some cheap stuff in it but its still a fun game to play!

      I’d give it an 8/10

  • Revorse

Just finished watching Kamen Rider W. Which was great and now has me interested in tokusatsu. Are there any other tokusatsu fans here?

    • http://moefx.wordpress.com/ barklight

      Me!
      Waiting for Kamen Rider Wizard.

      • Revorse

Cool beans! Me too. I’m really feeling his design. And I hoping whatever Rider comes along later has a design that’s pretty badass as well.

    • Kobracon

WOOT! Major tokusatsu fan here. Catching up on Goukaiger currently and finished watching Tomica Heroes Rescue Fire not too long ago. Its pretty awesome.

  • zakou

Here is the question: How come movies are never as cool as anime? there are fantasy, sci-fi movies that don’t even come close of the coolness of anime.

I can name a few that are good and so please name some yourself, the ones i think are good are Silent Hill and Residen Evil movies, at least the two come close to the video game story, Silent Hill did amazing job capturing the story and atmosphere of SH the game imo.

Also there is one movie i think came close to anime and that was Casshern other than that there’s either nothing or im looking in the wrong places.

    • xMCXx

Wait, is this about Anime or Videogame to Movie adaptations?

      • zakou

Hmm its more about, tell me what movies are worthy watching xD

Like i mentioned games and anime usually have this epic story, atmosphere and such while movies/films xD imo have catching up to do in a way, so Silent Hill imo is a good example of a film made from a video game that’s really worth watching.

As Casshern live action movie is close to being good as the anime in a way ( as in the movie is only 2 hours or so but still manages to catch some anime atmospheres/scenes in an awesome way)

        • Malcolm Reynolds

You said SciFi but then jumped to VG movies.
So I generally think VG movies are trash. ResEvil series is moderately entertaining but really..its B movie trash.

          As for good SciFi:
          Equalibrium
          Serenity
          Firefly series
Among many many others are must watch.

Try those and see what you think and we can revisit and list more things you may enjoy.

    • Kin23g

Well, you shouldn’t compare anime to movies, since movies usually last one hour and a half on average. While anime consists of at least 10 episodes. (unless you’re talking about anime movies)

So yeah, nothing beats Death Note and Code Geass in Hollywood movies.
But are you okay with TV shows? Because both Lost and Game of Thrones are worth checking out. I found them as good as DN and CG.

      • zakou

Thanks alot everyone, I will check out some of the listed ones.

Good movies can be done in two hours, in the movie “Push” they had the righ idea, there was even a girl who had a similar ability to the geass but the movie as a whole was a bit poor due to story or characters.

I think there still is hope, alot of movies have the righ idea but poor overall result.

    • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

I’m one of these few person who have never watched Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Ring, Titanic, Transformer, Batman, Avenger, Avatar, etc. But I love Tekken Blood Vengeance, FF Advent Children. I do watch movie but most of them are Hongkong movie like Jackie Chan and Andy Lau.

  • KingOptimusOrigins111

Is anybody fed up with SE pushing another FF XIII project?

    • Archvile78

Not really, i’m probably one of the few who enjoy the universe of XIII but what annoy me is how they have 5 millions project going on while Versus XIII is still in “production”

      • KingOptimusOrigins111

Agreed, They need to focus on Versus and get it out before next gen.

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Yeah it makes me very mad, most people want versus yet the pretty much give us the finger and start working on more 13 when there is way less who want it

      • KingOptimusOrigins111

I just want the game in my PS3 before next gen. Its like Square Enix needs to restructure their company and get rid of Wada. I feel like they need to make Nomura the main man to make the main number entry FF’s and Kingdom Hearts. They also need to get a better boss for SE that actually listens to the fan-base.

        • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Agreed, they should just let Nomura make the decisions from now on.

He can actually make good games still.

And if they announce that versus will have a multi plat release I will flip,I will be very mad if they delayed it for porting crap

          • KingOptimusOrigins111

It will probably be Wada fault because the way Nomura talked about the game when he first announced it, he made it seem like he really wanted it exclusive to PS3 but Wada wants it multi-plat for money.

            • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Very true, nomura only makes exclusives really(which is the best type of game) But sadly most people just want to have it on all systems so they can earn more money(which they tend not too)

              • KingOptimusOrigins111

Very true, just look at FF XIII to FF XIII-2 sales that was a 4.5 million lose which is very disappointing.

                • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Yeah that just shows how many were dissapointed

                  • KingOptimusOrigins111

All I can say is if its not at TGS 2012 on its current build with a release date along with FF Type 0 for PS Vita as well then all hell is going to break loose by the Final Fantasy Fan-Base.

                    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Yeah most likely, people are getting tired of being jerked around.

Square should release FFt-0 on ps3 in hd,Id pay 50$ for that too hold me off until versus is out

                    • KingOptimusOrigins111

Hajime Tabata did say he would like to see the type franchise on consoles but he said he was really interested in PS Vita and would put FF Type 0 on PS Vita and localize it as well.

                    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

Well I hope it does come to the us and hopefully on vita and ps3 with cross plat play :D

                    • KingOptimusOrigins111

                      Well, lets hope TGS 2012.

                    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

                      If not,prepare the baseball bats

                    • KingOptimusOrigins111

and the swords, you can’t forget the swords.

                    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

                      I have them in hand

                    • KingOptimusOrigins111

                      LOL!!!

    • Kobracon

Not at all, I can’t wait for FF13-3. It’d be nice to have Versus now but by now, I’m just gonna treat it like a Blizzard game. It’ll be out when its out. And FF Type-0 -_-…..I think it’d be faster to learn japanese and just play it

    • ekka4shiki

It could be much worse, actually. From what i read from some XIII Ultimania translation, they said that the FFXIII series planned to be a compilation of 13 games. That’s a lot. It is clear that from the very start they want this series to beat FFVII (at least in terms of compilation). But now we all know, the reception of XIII is a mixed one, so maybe that plan is no longer relevant. I think one more game is the best they could do, with shrinking number of XIII-2 buyers and all.

As for the possible XIII-3 itself, it’s easy to look back and said that this XIII series are nowhere near great. But personally, i must admit even with its flaws i have fun with the series. I would have very very disappointed if they just finished the story with some random novel released only in japan. As long as XIII-3 provide proper closure then I’ll be fine with that.

    • zakou

Im ok with more XIII, actually happy ^^ but I wish they put everything on hold and finish versus.

      • Anime10121

Agreed, while XIII certainly isn’t the best Final Fantasy, its not the utter garbage that people would lead you to believe. I loved the second one (the characters just seemed to click better for me) and love the foreshadowing they did to the plot, and if XIII-3 actually delves into the FNC mythos like I think it will, my opinion of the (original) XIII series will probably go up exponentially.

But I do wish they’d hurry up and finish Vs. though, it’s my most anticipated “announced” game this gen, and once they finish that KINGDOM HEARTS 3 WOOHOO :D

But I do understand that the thousands of projects Square has going on has nothing to do with Vs, because its being handled by the Kingdom Hearts team, a wholly different team than the Final Fantasy team. Whats taking this team so long is the same thing that took FFXIII teams so long, getting their engine to do everything that they wanted it to do for them. Sadly putting other projects on hold would not speed up Vs. development considering its already in full production and its team is currently working on it.

  • Kin23g

I kind of like the community here, it’s small and cosy ..lol

    • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

      What a crazy hard question!

I will try to make a top 10 list here. My list will also not be in any particular order, I would never get a list made if I had to worry about the order lol.

I will also list the console I played these on… some of them are exclusive and obvious. (lol)

      1. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
      2. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
      3. GoldenEye 007 (N64)
      4. Devil May Cry (PS2)
      5. Xenogears (PS1)
      6. Phantasy Star Online (DC)
      7. Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)
      8. Final Fantasy (Oh my god! Don’t make me pick just one!)
      9. Huge list of various JP Role Playing Games (I can’t pick just one.)
      10. Assassins Creed 2 (PS3) / Tales of Vesperia (360)

GRRRR! Making this list made me very angry. No, seriously… lol. I feel like I missed so many good games. I couldn’t even hardly fit a current gen game on the list! I could probably change this top 10 list every 30 seconds lol.

      • FaithlessMr

        Awesome top spot dude :D

        • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

Thanks. My list was not ranked. With that said, I would have a very hard time not placing Chrono Trigger in the #1 spot.

          • FaithlessMr

It’s a game that does everything right. I keep coming back to it, only to find myself as amused and amazed at the game, just as I was the very first time I played it. It’s a game that was truly ahead of it’s time, and to this day manages to stay fresh and interesting.

          • FaithlessMr

    • Acidicsam

I was just thinking about this last night…so, let’s go! My favorite 10 games of all time. The console(s) in parenthesis is the console(s) that I played it on.

      10. Heavy Rain (PS3)
      9. Gears of War 3 (X360)
      8. Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
      7. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Xbox/PS2)
      6. Pokemon Emerald (GBA)
      5. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2/3DS)
      4. Bioshock (X360)
      3. Portal (X360/PC)
      2. Golden Sun/Golden Sun: The Lost Age (GBA)
      1. Fallout 3 (X360/PC)

I put both Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age because they were originally meant to be one big RPG on the N64, but the N64 was dying and the GBA had just come out, so they split the story in half and released it as two separate titles on the GBA. If I had to choose, though, I would choose Golden Sun: The Lost Age.

    • KingKellogg The Waffle Haggler

      2. Star Ocean 2
      3. Kingdom Hearts 2
      4. Legend of Legaia
      5. Grandia

      7. FF (All of them)
      8. GTA San Andreas (Best GTA)
      9. Resident Evil 4

Honorary mention: Castlevania SotN, Brave Fencer Musashi, Brigandine, Saiyuki Journey West, Parasite Eve 1, Chocobo Racing, Tomba 2, Digimon World 1, Doraemon 2 SOS Otogi no Kuni, Yakuza series. PS1 is a beast.

With MGS,KH,POP and Max Payne I couldn’t choose which entry I liked the best.

    • ekka4shiki

      8. Tales of Vesperia
      9. Mass Effect 2
      10. Assassin Creed 2 or some other titles, can’t really decide >_<

    • Haruya

      I would have to say:

      - Catherine.
      - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4.
      - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
      - Heavy Rain.
      - Tales of Symphonia.
      - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
      - Alan Wake.
      - Borderlands.
      - Super Smash Bros. Melee.
      - Unreal Tournament 3.

There’s no particular order (choosing 10 was already hard enough). Although, I would definitely say that Catherine and Zelda: Ocarina of Time are at the very top of my list.

  • FaithlessMr

*Mandatory what are you playing question that we must always ask in any new open thread*

So, what are you guys playing? KH 3D for me, and TWEWY. I’ve been focusing mostly on these two for the time being.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Still playing Dyad, lol. Just got three stars on the first level of the second area, and aced the trophy level.

      • FaithlessMr

Are you through with AC then? Dyad, that’s one I definitely want to check out.

        • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

ACR’s kinda sitting aside until I platinum Dyad, lol. XD

          • FaithlessMr

We got ourselves a plat hunter, eh? The only two plats I got were FF XIII and FF XIII-2. I guess the only games I’ll ever bother to plat are Final Fantasy games and Kingdom Hearts games, out of sheer fanboyism.

    • Archvile78

Playing Splinter Cell HD trilogy on PS3. I never was a big fan of stealth games until recent times so it’s a nice time to try the serie. Switching between this and Tales of Graces F.

      • FaithlessMr

I’ll be honest, I was never able to get much into the SPlinter Cell series myself. Ever since the ps2 days, I just can’t bring myself to play it properly and enjoy it through and through. Big fan of the MGS series though.

    • Anime10121

      3D for me too :)

How are you liking TWEWY so far and how far along are ya? Its a godly game and I just replayed it a couple months ago to reaffirm that it is that good! Its my favorite DS game ever!

It’s my first time playing TWEWY. I got the game a long time ago, played it some but then KH DDD kinda forced me to get back to it. And I thought I was gonna put twewy aside for a while to focus on KH, but I just can’t! I’m on the second week, fourth day. I take forever to move on coz I always scour every area for new noise to complete the noise report and get dem rare pins :D

Now, about the game itself…I didn’t like it much at first. The touch screen controls + dual screen gameplay were off putting because I am terrible at multitasking. But I kept pushing forward, and eventually, it won me over. The way the story is told is definitely engaging, because it always manages to keep you interested and hoping the next day will bring you closer to the answers you seek; and the numerous plot twists always keep me on my toes. And I love plot twists, and convoluted stories, so it’s definitely up my alley in every single way. One innovative rpg that simply was ignored by many.

Seriously, everyone that says jrpgs are stale should play TWEWY, it’s a game that puts an interesting, modern spin in the jrpg tropes we all learned to love (or hate in some cases).

        • Anime10121

Yeah it really is one of the games that grows on you, the first week tends to be more tutorial-like to get you into the controls, while the second and third BAM you with much more story and plot (while still advancing the gameplay through new pins and items)!

Oh and dont forget if you have trouble multi-tasking, you can also set Shiki/Joshua to automatic/semi-auto and only control Neku (even if its set to automatic you can still control the top screen), that tends to help with the gameplay alot! The computer controls the main attacks and you just take control when needed, all the while still controlling Neku :P

And yes the big plot twist at the end will completely rock yo world :D

I promise you will LOVE this game after completing it!

I agree that everyone that says jrpgs are stale are just mad that the majority are on portables! The PSP and DS (and 3DS is also looking to take up the mantle) have had TREMENDOUSLY good jRPGs’, people are just spoiled to think that if it’s not on a console it sucks. Heck I hate the small screens of handhelds (which is why I love component out for PSP, why they chose not to include that feature for Vita is beyond me), but love Jrpgs, so I know where I have to go to get my fix!

          • FaithlessMr

I’ve been slowly trying to use both screens…I’ve set up the top screen to go auto as soon as I stop touching the dpad, but I’ve been trying to use both screens, if only to keep the puck moving and raising my fusion level to quickly dispatch the mobs. I don’t think I’ll ever set the top screen to go entirely manual, but I’ll definitely try and get the most out of both screens. I think I’m slowly getting better at it :P

And I think I got a slight TWEWY spoiler whilst playing KH DDD. It may not be of great importance, since the game is so full of plot twists it seems it was written by five M. Night Shyamalans, but it seemed like something I wasn’t supposed to know just yet. You’ll prolly understand what I mean once you wrap the first world in the game with both characters ;)

            • Anime10121

You play basically the same way I do :) I also left it on auto but controlled it as best I could to keep combos going, and you’ll DEFINITELY need them later on in the game.

Oh I’ve seen KH3D’s “spoiler” already and while I wont say whether it actually is a spoiler or not, it isn’t actually that heavy considering you dont know the circumstances around it yet. TWEWY gets MUCH more plot thrown at you starting near the end of the second week and everything starts to make a lot of sense at end game.

              • FaithlessMr

Oh, awesome :D Made it to the fifht day. Our convo about TWEWY has actually made me want to play the game even more, which I’ve been doing (my poor DS’s battery doesn’t last long since I keep playing it non-stop, lol). I’m glad it isn’t that heavy. And I kinda suspected that character anyway, so I knew he was up to something :x

Well, it’s upwards of 95 degrees in my room with my xbox, so I’m avoiding playing my Xbox in the daytime, so I’ve been alternating between Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns, Metal Gear Solid 3D, and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.

      EDIT: need specifications

      • FaithlessMr

Golden Sun! I need to finish that game, I stopped playing it when it was getting good :x And dang, that’s hot!

        • Acidicsam

I love Golden Sun. I can’t wait/hope that they continue the series, despite the poor sales and decent reviews of Dark Dawn.

          • FaithlessMr

Dark Dawn came at a different time than the first did. I can see where many reviewers were coming from, but I still think the game is really fun!

            • Acidicsam

Same here, I really enjoyed it. Though, after 7 years of waiting, I was just happy to get something Golden Sun related.

              • FaithlessMr

I guess expectations just ran wild…since we were all waiting that long for the game. And it’s always hard to meet such high expectations. So in a way I think we got the best we could. I didn’t finish the game yet so I can’t speak much about it, but so far so good!

                • Acidicsam

Which party members have you got?

                  • FaithlessMr

Oh, I’ll actually have to boot the game up to tell you! I think I got six party members by now? Or were they five? I can’t really say but I think I got six right now. It’s been some time since I last played it, see?

                    • Acidicsam

Why is your house so hot?
        No AC?
        Broken AC?
To cheap to pay power bill lol?
Thats not really safe living conditions man.

        • Acidicsam

I really should have specified that my house isn’t that hot, my room is.

Most of my house is fine, but my room with my xbox is right between two rooms with air conditioners, which means it gets the shaft in terms of air conditioning. Most of the time it is fine, but it’s 110 degrees outside, so my air conditioners have a hard time keeping that room cool. So, I packed up my 3DS and moved to the living room where it is nice and cool.

          • Malcolm Reynolds

            Sheesh!
I would quit life if it was that hot in my room/house.

            • Acidicsam

              I can’t quit life yet!

      • FaithlessMr

Yup, I got a 3DS last christmas (Zelda edition), mostly for tales of the abyss, and KH 3D. Got some other games meanwhile, and I can definitely tell you it has been worth it so far. The only thing I dislike about the system is the region lock, but other than that, smooth sailing!

Just finished the first “Fatal Frame” on PS2. Great game, although a bit frustrating at times, but still great nonetheless. Scary as hell too, haha.

Moving to “Shadow of the Colossus” now. I really wanna know just how good that game really is.

      • FaithlessMr

It’s reaally good. Trust me. Or actually, don’t, play it for yourself, don’t take my word for it, you’ll see how great it is :D

I just found out that on top of having a WiiU and 3DS version, Scribblenauts Unlimited will also be on the PC.

Do I want it on PC or 3DS? Gah!

    Where’s Falcoms PS3 game?

that probably won’t come for a while. O.o I’ve found that they usually release into the next gen, when the next next gen is around. Though they did release a LOH game for vita.

    I’m curious, so I’ll ask:

Do you speak (or know) any other languages apart from English?

I’m from Mexico, so my main language is Spanish. English is my second and I know a little bit of Japanese. How about you guys?

    • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

I’m from Indonesia and I’m Chinese so I know Mandarin, Indonesia and English. I know a little vocab of Japanese but I have no clue of Katakana and Hiragana word, I know Kanji though because its same as Mandarin. The meaning is pretty much same.

Pretty much what SasuleUchiha said except replace Indonesian with Malay.

I’m a Finn so I speak Finnish, a little bit of Swedish , English, studying French so a little bit of that.

  • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

So I started watching this anime Sword Art Online. (You may recall we did a post or two on the upcoming PSP game.) There are only four episodes out at the moment, with the fifth one airing August 4 in Japan. I’m really enjoying it (and I’m super picky.)

I only have a few, smart alec-type questions for those who’ve watched.

    1) In the first episode, Kirito says that they can’t taste the food in the game. Obviously, because it’s a game. Why is that in later episodes, there are constant mentions of foods being tasty?

    2) Two years have passed from episodes 1 through 4. How are their actual human bodies still alive? Considering they can’t leave the game, how have they been eating? It could be that Kirito’s parents and other players’ friends / room mates / what have you are feeding them every day, forcing them to chew and what not, but still, I find that odd.

    3) Also in relation to the two years bit: how is it that the battery for the NerveGear is still running? When they showed it, it didn’t look to have any wall plug. And if it does, wouldn’t someone simply be able to, you know, unplug it, killing any power that it’d have to fry the player’s brain?

    4) How did the NerveGear, what with its whole brain fry thing, pass certification?

    • http://moefx.wordpress.com/ barklight

      1. You watched episode 2 right? When Kirito met Asuna and gave her some kind of cream to ate with bread, maybe they’ve been using it. Or it could be that they’ve already accustomed with the bland taste of the food and told it was tasty and such.

      The rest, is still mystery.

      • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Yeah, I saw episode two. But that’s not really an answer, lol. If anything, it just adds to the mystery. And considering it’s a game, there shouldn’t be any “taste” at all. They shouldn’t feel anything, lol.

        • http://moefx.wordpress.com/ barklight

Yeah, that one adds up to the list of contradiction in this anime.

The bad thing is, this anime tells the story about how people live in the virtual world instead, meeting people, helping each other. They haven’t mentioned a single thing about how the NerveGear works and what about the outer world, the real world even though it’s already in episode 4. There must some ruckus right? Regarding the players got stuck in the Sword Art Online, and if you killed, you die in real world (whether it’s true or not).

    • ekka4shiki

I think those questions is better aimed at those who’ve read the light novel. People who only have watched the anime, is just as clueless as you (including me). In any case …

      1. Kirito said that in episode 1? Can’t remember it. I thought he only said that eating food in the game just trick you into thinking you’re not hungry or something.

2 & 3. As Barklight put it, it’s still mystery. The concept of this whole MMO would be much more believable if they explain things in real life, if you ask me. But for now, my assumption is the government taking of care them or something, with so many victims it must be some sort of national problem. As for the method, remember this is in a future where tech is greatly advance, the writer could easily pull something out of nowhere and said that it’s the way the world deal with those problem. (ex: advanced medical tools, etc). I mean, they could have suffer deep vein thrombosis if remain stasis like that for month(s).

      4. lol

  • Anime10121

Just finished KH3D on Proud mode with secret ending in check and all I can say is WOW!

    No spoilers here at all:)

This game’s story is much like that of the first, in that it places much more emphasis on the Disney stories than the overarching plot, that is until you get close to the end, then it throws more plot at you than Allen Iverson could handle in his prime (and trust me when I say, that’s a good thing)! The last world in this game feels MORE epic than the last battle with Xemnas in KH2 and what happens in the Keyblade Graveyard at the end of Birth By Sleep. There is just SO much that happens and it kinda overwhelms you, but when you think about it, in terms of the rules the series has established over its 10 year run, it all makes sense. I swear people may talk about this series being “convoluted”, but if you actually play the games and pay attention, its not that hard to understand (in fact it’s really easy).

While I still think the combat was more fluid in Birth by Sleep, it’s still fun as ever here. The Reality Shifts are a really nice addition to the battle system, and I find them much more fun and useful than the Shotlocks were in BBS. Flow motion while looking almost impossibly hard to handle, becomes easier and easier as you play the game and figure out how it works! What I will say though is payback raid/shot is a little unresponsive sometimes and that the Once More/Second Chance combo doesnt work quite as well in this game than it does in all the games prior (you can die if another combo is started at the right time even with once more equipped).

Its also funny that I found NUMEROUS instances where the game actually makes fun of the series for “taking so long” to get the next main game :P You have to listen for them, but the way some of the characters said the things they said, it cant be anything but Square making fun of themselves, and its quite funny :P

I’m telling you though, BE prepared when you get to the final world, as it is just beyond amazing, not to say the others aren’t, but even as a fan of both Square and Disney, the main story of KH is simply fantastic and a lot of times, touching. The final world has so much in it, it almost seems like the whole thing was planned to be this vast when they came out with the first game! Sadly I had been spoiled of a couple of the things that happened in game involving 2 characters, but its good to know that there was still a lot more to the game than those two (relatively big spoilers).

On the matter of the only 3 negative reviews it seems to have on Metacritic, they shouldn’t even be listed IMO, because EACH one of them (when you read them) say the gameplay is fun, and works well, but that “the stories to hard to
understand when some of them had admitted to not even playing all the
main games (not the series fault, although blame can be placed on Square for making the games too spread out on too many consoles), or that its a good game, but since its not KH3 on a console, so its a crappy side game.

It all just seems incredibly whiny and un-professional, while I can understand the 70′s because even if I find the series great, it may not be as awesome to me as it is to others, but the 60, 50 and 40 are complete bull, if this game is a 5-10 or below average, then I’d like to see what they call good game’s because they must be godly. This game (according to each of them) plays well and has no glitches, so it seems weird to me that they seem to pan the game so much

While the game isn’t quite as “new” an experience as Birth by Sleep was,
as a prequel to Kingdom Hearts 3, this game does EVERYTHING it needs to
do to establish itself as a main entry in the series and set’s the series up for the inevitable big number 3. It actually introduces so many things that need to be taken care of, I have a hard time believing ALL of it can be done in the third and last entry in the Xehanort saga.

I know some people may not take my opinion as a valid one, considering I’m a big fan of the series (hence the avatar), but it really is a great game, even if you dont know jack about the plot! Say what you will about the plot, but even series naysayers have to admit the gameplay is fun and feels relatively new in each installment, even the side games.

I’d recommend anyone looking for a fun game to play on their 3DS to pick it up, even if you dont know jack squat about a Kingdom of Hearts with character’s whose hair could poke out your eye and wear shoes that are far too big, wear clothes accessorized with thousands of belts and zippers, and has people interacting with walking talking rodents, dogs, ducks, etc. all the while acting like theres nothing strange at all about it! If you have a 3DS do yourself a favor, and pick up one of the best games out for it that isn’t a port or a Nintendo franchises.

tldr. Well that was a LOT longer than intended, but basically all that said, its one of the best 3rd party games out there on the 3DS (thats not a port) and if you have a 3DS and dont have this game, FOR SHAME :P

    • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

Congrats on beating the game. I really need to get some portable hardware so I can start playing all of these great JRPGs.

      • Anime10121

Yeah you really need one, though I’m a big Sony fan, right now, I’d say go with the 3DS, as there are MANY JRPGs on the DS and quite a few are announced for 3DS (we just await localization announcements). Vita hasn’t seemed to come into its own quite yet, although hopefully things’ll be a little better in a year or so, because that sexy portable NEEDS some JRPG love (Ragnarock is the only original JRPG I can think of thats even announced for it).

PSP is also a good buy because it has excellent titles such as BBS, Legend of Heroes TitS, and Crisis Core, among MANY others, oh and also theirs component out, so that you can play on your tv, dont know why any of the other handhelds dont have something like this, because it helps a LOT!

        • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I’m planning to try and purchase a 3DS and Vita very soon. I also want to get a new tv lol. Decisions, Decisions…

  • http://www.di.fm Spicy Chicken

I was going to post this in the thread relating to the GRID 2 teaser, but it got a bit ranty/overly long so seemed better off here.

GRID, great game, best semi-realistic racing game I’ve ever played, and soon to be privy to what I hope will be an awesome sequel. It had a ‘feel’ that granted not everyone got, but those that did ‘get it’ will tell you the same as I’m about to… sublime gameplay, awesome replays (why is it the one game that has replays I WANT to save doesn’t let me save them! >__>), which sort of defeats the point really. But still, no game (and yeah, you can keep your super realistic stuff, not for me) captured the experience of what I imagine a muscle car to be like, as opposed to the reality of what it is. And that’s an important distinction to make, and one I’d like to expand upon here.

I’ve played super-realistic stuff, from Sega’s legendary Ferrari F355 Challenge to iRacing, then back again to Gran Turismo and so on, and every time I came away feeling underwhelmed. It was either too stressful, or the handling didn’t seem right, or the car didn’t grip properly, felt too slow etc. Basically, the virtual reenactment of real life driving came off as very unnatural, against what my instincts told me a car at speed ‘should’ feel like.

On the other hand, the Ridge Racer games were (and are) great fun, but at no point did I believe I was driving a real car. The handling was too perfect, mistakes were punished too abruptly, and every aspect just felt a little to ‘sharp’ to be real. (though still super fun!)

Then came GRID. It changed everything, literally, well, for the insignificant mofo writing this post, anyway! ;)
The only remotely realistic racing game that at last felt natural. I understood where the limit of grip was, because I felt it, it ‘fit’ my instincts like a glove. Not too extreme or too soft, but JUST right. The handling was perfect, but not Ridge Racer perfect. Especially the Classic Muscle Cars!
They bob and sway at high speed as if they’re about to go out of control even in a straight line, circa the first scene in Gone in 60 Seconds (the original), yet not so much you’re afraid of nailing it. They dip and drift around corners enough that you have to ease the throttle to get through, but not so much that there isn’t room for error or artistic preference (I always like to drift a little more than needed, it just ‘feels’ right).

And the braking… no game has ever felt so good braking into a corner, it’s what I always imagined braking hard in American car chases SHOULD feel like. So, am I the only one that puts imagination ahead of the reality of driving? I have a license by the way, I know how and what it feels like to drive a car, but the car races I dream about, the ones I grew up wishing I could take part in, have little to do with reality and everything to do with a world where cars seem to handle in a magical way that allows for drifts, skids and turns that would put most people in hospital, while still being crash capable if pushed.

I get the appeal of realism I do, and I sure as hell don’t expect the trend to be stemmed now, but I prefer a car that handles like the ones I drive when I close my eyes at night. I guess I want to play a game that mirrors my world of fantasy, not a pale imitation of the ordinary world I already live in.

Since the MGS4 comment thread is currently locked, I’ll post some news for it here. The MGS4 patch is roughly 500 MB in size, install time is about 16 minutes, and install size is roughly 9 gigs.

All in all, I’d say that’s EXTREMELY small considering the original used up about 25 gigs between it’s various installs.

    Here’s the source :)

      Definitely not bad at all.

Full list of trophies, btw (hidden included): http://exophase.com/game/metal-gear-solid-4-ps3/trophies/#PSN-MJ-Snake

Sorry about locking the comments in the article. I’ve unlocked it as of right now.

I was hoping locking the thread might lock out the trolls from spamming down votes. I was also trying to prevent others from posting a comment in the article, since all the comments were getting down vote spammed. (I didn’t get to see if my theory was correct, I didn’t make it home quick enough.) xD

Seems like Sal found a good temporary solution for now. =)

      • Anime10121

Hey, no hard feelings, I can DEFINITELY understand why you locked it, that thread was completely getting out of hand (people posting non-stop comments about all the downvoting was getting just as bad as the downvote spam itself)!  I just wanted to leave the news somewhere, and couldn’t think of a more appropriate spot than the Open Thread :)

I’ve implemented a sort of stylesheet switcher at the top of the site. The other stylesheet is a WIP, but I figured I’d like to let everyone try it out. I don’t think it will replace the one we have going right now, though. But it’s meant to be more simplistic.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

      Nice!

Seems like I missed quite a bit yesterday. That’s what I get for leaving the house. =P

  • LordKaiser

It’s a late news but DLC for White Knight Chronicles was released on the PSN Store in America to download for free.Get them ASAP before they are removes.

About the Message board I think that the votes should be restricted to the randoms as many are annoying trolls. If not the whole thing should be removed. Positive and Negative s alike.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

      Thanks for the heads up.

I think I will go download the free DLC just in case what you suggested comes true.

YAY!  Old school Disqus!  God I love this format, will miss the auto-update, but this form is SO much better IMO:)

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Really? I think it’s so hideous. This is just temporary until Disqus adds the ability to remove down-votes. There have been too many trolls on the site within the past couple of days wasting their day away somehow giving each comment like 20-30 down-votes. Disqus still hasn’t answered my latest letter, but it’s a weekend so they’re probably not working. I’ll make sure they’re aware of this issue tomorrow.

      • Anime10121

Yeah, I can agree that the design of new Disqus is better, but the main reason I like this better is because it lacks the anonymity that new Disqus has.  With this version you actually get to see who in the community agrees with you, and anyone who actually disagrees, rather than just click a button without any sort of response, actually has to COMMENT on why they disagree, instead of spamming downvotes.

While the design and functionality of new Disqus may indeed be better, without those key functions, I find it inferior to this version.  I just feel that this version promotes a better community than the newer one, which encourages anonymous spam (it doesn’t just happen here, many other sites who use new Disqus have the same issue with downvote spam).

If they get rid of downvoting and add the feature to see who likes your comments in the new revision of Disqus, I would LOVE it!  But either way, its your call, and I’m a fan of Gematsu either way (this site breaks news faster than some of the bigger sites out there), so I’m not going anywhere! :P

        • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

Yeah. I’m going to work on trying to make that a reality. Convincing them, I mean.

In the mean time, I tried to make old Disqus as pretty as possible. Playing around with unfamiliar formatting is annoying, though. Maybe I’ll work on some more tweaks tomorrow.

        • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I couldn’t agree more. You said it better than I could. =)

This temporary rollback is for the best, let’s hope they get the new version updated sooner.

    PROUD-ly beaten KH3D!!!
    No pic = Hoax.

    • Anime10121

Hey how’d you like the ending? Did you find it as terrific as I did :D

      • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

        So awesome :D
The 7th ******** ******* is the most exciting part :D

        • Anime10121

Yeah, that part, while I had kinda been expecting it for a while, was a really nice touch (and couldn’t wait for them to come out and actually make it a reality)!  Protection of one’s self is a very important trait to have.

Now I cant wait to see what’s announced at TGS this year, if they are still doing the one game per year thing, I expect an HD collection to come next year (preferably with KH1, CoM, and KH2).  Then in 2014 an HD remaster of (BBS, Days, and DDD)! And finally in 2015 KH3!!!

          • http://www.facebook.com/JaeWhy SasuleUchiha

That’ll be best case scenario and those collection are great since I haven’t played Days, CoM and Coded.
I’ll totally collect all trophies :D
My god thinking of them are already exhilarating

            • Anime10121

Yep yep, although honestly, even being the big KH fan I am, you’re not missing much with Days and Coded, dont get me wrong, I’d still recommend giving them a go, but generally speaking, both lack any sort of significance.

While Days had its moments (especially if you’re a fan of Roxas and Axel), you can tell its not a main game, and it shows through weak gameplay and almost a non-existent/non important plot.  I went into Days thinking the Organization would receive more characterization, and that I’d get to know more about them, but it really doesn’t do much to improve upon anything already mentioned in II or CoM.

Coded on the otherhand has MAGNIFICENT gameplay, Its almost a carbon copy of Birth by Sleeps (which IMO is a great thing)!  However its plot is entirely filler and serves no purpose besides the very last cutscene and the secret video.  Honestly though, it’s still pretty fun for gameplay alone.

Now CoM/Re:CoM on the other hand, this game is important.  It has a lot of plot in the game that sets up KHII, plus it also has fun battles with the members already vanquished in KH2!  While the Disney worlds themselves are filler for the most part, it has a lot of plot in between each Disney world!  It also was the first appearance of Twilight Town, and the first time you get to play with Riku in the series!  People may complain about its battle system, but honestly it isnt that hard to get (and IMO very fun), and in truth, its very much a precursor to the awesomeness of BBS’ battle system.  Oh and one more thing THIS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAL8dMLZrTU  is the theme song to the final boss (IMO one of the most epic songs of the entire series)!

But hey, I agree, I can just imagine the trophies for the games, obtaining Ultima Weapon (always a grind), defeating secret bosses (Kurt Zisa, Phantom, Sephiroth, Mysterious Figure, etc), synthesizing all items!  There’s so much potential there!  ESPECIALLY if they do what I hope they intend to do and release the collection as the Final Mix’s, which would give the rest of the world Xemnas in KH1, the XIII data battles and the Lingering Sentiment in KH2, etc.  Those trophies would be fantastic :)

I just discovered this cool Sleeping Dogs live action fight film. It’s around 8 minutes or so. It contains mature content. Probably NSFW.

Just checked my spam in my email and noticed that the ONE time yahoo ever spammed a Playstation email, it was my beta code to Playstation Allstars Battle Royale.  I checked the dates for the beta and it is now OVER!  Why does Yahoo HATE me

That sucks! Sorry to hear that happened to you. =(

      • Anime10121

Yeah I know, and I just tried to play it, got excited that it came all the way to the character selection screen (usually it wont even start the game if the beta’s expired) and then, it wouldnt find any matches because the servers been shut down.
        Hopes crushed yet again :(

        • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

That’s really cruel. Allowing you to get that far to only fail in the end. =(
