Metal Gear Solid 4 budget version adds full game install, Metal Gear 25th anniversary site launched
Trophies aren't the only new feature for MGS4 re-release.
July 11, 2012 / 10:36 PM EDT / (@salromano)

Konami has shared details about the upcoming “PlayStation 3 the Best” version of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The game is both Trophy-capable, and will allow players to install the entire game all at once, rather than have it install chapter by chapter. For those who already own the game, a re-purchase will not be necessary, as both features will arrive via a patch.

Konami also launched the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary official website.

As detailed yesterday, Konami will host an anniversary event on August 30 at Tokyo Midtown. It is invite-only, but fans will be able to join the festivities by entering a random drawing for a chance to attend. At the event, Kojima Productions boss Hideo Kojima is expected to make an announcement in relation to his idea of a game that connects people.

Thanks, 4Gamer.net.

i always wonder why japan always uses that cheap boxart.

i mean even the greatest hits isn’t that ugly compared to this :

and the full installation is a plus :D

though i still have the game installed after 2 years now so it’s all good :)

that sucks, guess you need a strong luck :P

and yes they should release the pic as a wallpaper.

i wonder if there’s gonna be some hidden surprises like the “Ender’s Project” from the “Zone of the Enders HD Night Fastest in the Universe Reboot Preview.”

Awesome! Just a few hours ago I posted – Would be nice if the patch that has the trophies, also did something about the chapter installs.

I didn’t expect my wish to be granted so quickly! :D

I wonder just how big the install data will be for the game. I’m gonna guess over 3GB at the least.

    • Anime101210

Wow, we must be psychic! We were just talking about and hoping about that exact same thing a couple hours ago :P

That is AWESOME and I think I like that feature more than the trophy patch itself:)

      Great day for MGS4 fans!

      • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I think we both have psychic powers. =P

As for the install size, let’s hope they found a way to compress parts of each chapter.

        • Anime101210

Agreed, as is, the installs would take more than 20 gigs if I remember right. So hopefully they have compressed it down a bit.

Edit: Sal wrote above that its about 25gigs. That would be a huge hurt to anyone’s harddrive, although my 250gb drive would gladly take the hit:P

          • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

I don’t have 25GB of free space on my PS3. (lol)

            • Anime101210

Hey, dont feel bad, Im right behind you with less than 40 left :(

Need to upgrade my drive soon!

    • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

      Im betting 20 XD

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

IIRC, there were five chapters and each was about a 5 gig install. So 5×5 = approx. 25 gigs, I’m guessing.

    • Malcolm Reynolds

The initial install was 8 mins plus 3 mins per chapter.
It used the 5gb limit on installs Sony had in place as a max for 3rd party devs.
As I recall from a friend who was a loser and jailbroke his PS3 to pirate games he said the whole game clocked in over 25gb’s.

Awesome. Hope the release date for the English version is not too far off.

  • whiteferrero

I have MGS4. And I only watch my bro play it. Will now play this for the trophiez. yum.

  • Malcolm Reynolds

So glad I never finished this back in the day.
I will restart it as soon as the patch drops. The full install is better to me than the trophies but I’ll take both!
Only reason I never finished it before is b/c I wanted to dedicate a full 3 days straight of playing it start to finish without interruption.
I wont ignore my wife and daughter to play a game so I have been waiting on them to take a girls trip.
They are going somewhere in Sept. seems timing is perfect on this patch!

    • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

D: This game is worht ignoring them for..

      • Malcolm Reynolds

While I know you keed, its obvious you dont have a wife and kid amirite?

One day you will see how easy it is to put the people you love and who love you most before yourself/wants/needs.

        • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

          Oh I know,It was a meree joke ;}

  • rockman29

That’s lame, I was hoping for a Substance/Subsistence version with added stuff, oh well.

  • rockman29

    Wait a minute…

Isn’t this ‘The Best’ edition an old PS3 edition of MGS4? It’s just Japan’s Greatest Hits, isn’t it?

    What the heck…

Also need a website link in the main article: http://www.konami.jp/mg25th/

  • hush404

Ooohhh shit, yeah, I gotta install that sucker again :P

  • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

MGS 4 finally getting trophies got me thinking. What other early PS3 games still need trophies? One game comes to mind right away, Valkyria Chronicles!

Come on, Sega! As Konami just proved, you can still release a trophy patch! It’s not too late! You could even release a complete version of the game that includes all the DLC!

Okay. Sega, I know you read all my posts on Gematsu. Let’s do this thing!

    (Yeah, I’ll keep dreaming…)

    • whiteferrero

Agreed! That would totally make me finish the game because my save got corrupted at the last chapter,

    • zakou

Don’t forget trophies for eternal sonata xD oh and the rest of all PS3 games.

      • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

For sure! I would love to see Eternal Sonata get a trophy patch. Considering the 360 version has achievements, it shouldn’t be to difficult to add trophies to the PS3 version.

        • Dc1

I didn’t know that the 360 version had/has achievement. I loved Eternal Sonata!

          • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

            @gematsu-77f959f119f4fb2321e9ce801e2f5163:disqus & @gematsu-14f2ebeab937ca128186e7ba876faef9:disqus

Yeah, the 360 version does have achievements. At launch, Microsoft basically required all games for the 360 to have them.

(Bit of a history lesson here, lol.)

Sony didn’t launch the PS3 with trophies, as you may know. The trophy system went live with PS3 firmware 2.40. 2.40 went live during July, 2008. PS3 Trophies were not mandatory until 2009.

The PS3 version of Eternal Sonata was released just before trophies became mandatory. This still brings up the same question, why not? The 360 version has achievements, should have been easy enough.

One thing to keep in mind, the PS3 Eternal Sonata was released with additional bonus content. It was an enhanced version of the game. (Man, Namco Bandai sure loves to release enhanced editions of JRPGs.)

I suppose you could say the bonus content outranks the lack of trophy support. My opinion? I think not including trophies was kinda lazy.

Translation – Trophy patch! Make it happen, Namco-Bandai!

        • whiteferrero

wah. why only 360? Chopin would roll in his grave!

    • TheFoolArcana

Personally, I love that game too much to want (or need) artificial replayablity, or allow a quarter of my screen to be blocked along with an annoying beep in the middle of its glorious storyline.

      • http://gematsu.com/ Zero

Fair enough. To be clear, I’m not saying VC is a bad game because it doesn’t have trophies.

I kinda view trophies as little in game goals for me to try and accomplish. I like to unlock trophies for some games, I love to 100% complete my favorite games. I’ve been doing this long before trophies or achievements.

For example, I got the Excalibur 2 for Steiner in FFIX. I remember that took me a long time. Lots and lots of failures. It was just something I wanted to do. (In order to get this weapon, you had to reach the final dungeon in like 12 hours! I just remember it was really frigging hard to do.)

Point is, I’d be trying to accomplish goals in games I enjoy, with or without trophies. To me, the trophies are almost like little rewards from the developers.

I can imagine one of them saying… Zero, you spent all this time playing our game! Thanks so much. For all the hard work you put into unlocking everything… Take this Platinum trophy. (Trophy sound)

If I could, I’d try and unlock trophies for all my games. I just don’t have the time to do so.

        • whiteferrero

same sentiments. I remember in FFvIII how I had to get all the cards in Trip. Triad, and get 100 Ultima and 100 Aura for all the characters. XD The little trophies give some encouragement. Though even in this age of trophies, I still go 100% i.e. Graces F, completing all the titles (w/c doesn’t have a trophy). XD

  • HanPaul

A patch! someone in Konami is thinking good!

  • Viiral

Oh gawd the cover is hideous.. im not putting that in my collection.

    • http://gematsu.com/ Sal Romano

That’s the Japanese cover. The U.S. cover will probably look like this: http://i.imgur.com/SLUNN.jpg

Though, it’d be nice if they released our budget version with a new, Yoji Shinkawa cover.

      • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

Man those covers suck….I hope that Have a yoji one XD
