Mostly compatible with Wii accessories and software. Mostly.

Nintendo has released a list of specifications for the Wii U.

Available on Nintendo’s website, the specifications detail everything from its hardware and dimensions, to its operating system and software – though its CPU and GPU are largely unspecified beyond their basic capabilities and manufacturer.

It also states that “nearly all” Wii software and accessories are compatible with the system

Hardware features worth noting are:

  • Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i
  • Compatibility with HDMI, Wii D-Terminal, Wii Component Video, Wii RGB, Wii S-Video Stereo AV and Wii AV
  • CPU: IBM Power-based multi-core processor
  • GPU:  High Definition AMD Radeon
  • Internal flash memory, with SD memory card and USB storage support
  • Four USB 2.0 slots: two front, two back

As for its software and other features, the website highlights:

  • Miiverse: An online network that allows players to talk, play and interact with one another
  • Wii U internet browser
  • Video chat online using the Game Pad’s built-in camera
  • Access the Nintendo eShop
  • Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube will be available

    “CPU: IBM Power-based multi-core processor
GPU: High Definition AMD Radeon” so we still dont know the most important parts lol

@Kougeru: Yeah, no idea of storage yet either.

  • Malcolm Reynolds

    No HDD?
    Flash memory?

Did MS’ cheap asses design this thing?

    • AdamBoy64

@Malcolm Reynolds: That is a good pick up. If this is true, it confirms no hard drive.

Which confirms Nintendo aren’t serious about digital distribution and rules out something like GC Virtual Console titles.

Well, unless it turns out to be like 64Gb of flash memory. I doubt that, though.

The specs above could be used to describe a handful of hardware. Way to be extremely vague, Nintendo.

  • Dystopiq

I read that the CPU is similar to the Power PC 7 series, and the GPU as the AMD Radeon HD 6000 series.

They said more powerful than PS3 but give no details on the processor. In fact the Nintendo conference blew chunks yesterday. I love you Nintendo but you need to create new franchises. I love Mario,Zelda, DK, Metroid, Super Smash and Mario Kart. But I want more than that with every new Nintendo system. I’ve been buying Nintendo consoles since 1989, and the competitor consoles as well. I still would rather play my PS3 over my 360 and Wii.
