E3 2012 Preview: DmC Devil May Cry

A powerful demon runs a local night club.

DmC Devil May Cry has evolved a great deal since it was first announced in September 2010. We saw a brand-new level showcased behind closed doors at E3 yesterday, where Dante discovers that a very powerful demon runs a local night club in which she influences the right and famous, and turns them to do her bidding. Dante’s intentions? Dispatch her. 

Dante arrives at the night club and immediately knocks out security when he’s told he can not enter as his name is not on “the list.” An unfinished cutscense depicting a quick walk through the night club leads directly into the action, where its dancers begin to morph into dark, disfigured creatures. We were told that the purpose of this demo is to show the fluidity of combat that can be achieved when changing weapons and fighting styles on the fly. With one of the developers at the controls, fighting efficiently appears easy, but it’s difficult to say how well that will translate into the hands of a new or unfamiliar player.

Dante often shifts between angel mode and demon mode by pressing the left or right trigger. Depending on the mode, Dante makes use of different weapons. After a few waves of easy enemies, the demon begins to tear apart reality by shifting around elements of the environment and reshaping them into an arena-style setup. The logo of a brand new game show starring the player appears on the screen: “The Devil Has Talent.” The head demon decides she is going to have a little fun by running Dante through a series of challenges. If he survives, he will get a shot at fighting her in person.

The first of these challenges is a 30-second timed battle. When the clock reaches zero, the floor will open and Dante will fall to his death. This challenge is meant to test the player’s combo ability, as the more attacks you chain together, the faster the enemy will go down. After a quick success, Dante is on to the next room. This one first has enemies that can only be defeated in angel mode, followed by enemies that can only be defeated in demon mode. Yet another simple task for Dante, as he gracefully mops the floor with their faces. Finally, Dante is pitted against an entirely new enemy type referred to as “the Rage.” These enemies will appear in groups of at least two, and when one is defeated, the others enter an enraged state which causes them to be resistant to knock-back. This is the first real challenge presented during the demo, as Dante gets hit again and again, unable to land an effective combo on the second Rage. We see that ranged attacks work more effectively in this situation, so Dante finishes the fight primarily by shooting from afar with Ebony and Ivory. Unfortunately the demo ends after this segment and we’re unable to see the head demon’s promised boss fight.

In this new take on the series, Dante will have a wide variety of new weapons available to him that can all be swapped out during gameplay using the d-pad. This seems like it could get a bit complex since each weapon functions differently, but moves for each weapons can be bought and sold at in-game stores that allow players to choose the overall size of their arsenal. Hopefully, a drastic change in controls and a new look won’t be enough to scare both players new and old away from DmC Devil May Cry.

    Despite all the unanimous bitching about the appearance of Dante I think this looks solid and pretty awesome, i’m very interested in it.

    I watched some gameplay from the show floor, the game looks fun.

    That is all I’m going to say, not going to poke the beehive.

    Hmm….sounds a bit like Heavenly sword where fast enemies need to be taken out by the dual sword mode and heavily armored guys must be hit with the two-hand form. Not a bad thing, and Heavenly Sword wasn’t that bad a game.

    Wonder how good the potential for combos are…
