Tomb Raider delayed to 2013

Reason: to deliver the "very highest quality game."

Crystal Dynamics’ upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, initially set to make it out in 2012, has been pushed to 2013, studio head Darrell Gallagher has said on its official blog.

“When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about,” said Gallagher in a message to the community. “The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.

“Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.”

Our own Olivia Slayton will provide her thoughts on the game when she sees it for herself next month.

Still can’t wait to see more of the game. It was so very impressive at last years e3.

I don’t mind waiting for it, so long as the world doesn’t end before I get to play the game, lol.

  • kdashkula

No surprise…….it is a game from Square Enix

    • Charlie

@kdashkula: No, SE is publishing the game, not developing. It stuns me how many people don’t know the difference between publisher and developer.

  • RyoonZ

    Doesn’t matter. Make it great.
And I hope the CG will be better than Deus Ex.
Deus Ex was great game but the CG was a little off.

While I am extremely hyped and keen for this game, I think it’s great what they’re doing. All the best CD!

Just make it great, Crystal Dynamics. Take the time you need.

  • Malcolm Reynolds

Yes, b/c there arent enough Q1 2013 games to buy.
Last of Us, Ni No Kuni, God of War Ascension….etc.

Q1 2013 is going to be amazing.

As for fall of 2012 having stiff competition….what praytell is coming out this fall that TR had to compete with?

Call of Duty and Halo 4 are not of concern for a game like TR.

    Just make it awesome, guys!

You’re trying to give a sex idol a less sexual appeal; that’s no easy task. Take all the time you need!

At least it’s only 1st quarter. They could have delayed it till fall 2013, that would have sucked

  • anime10121

Darn! Wakin up to crappy news, I wanted this WAY more than Hitman:(

  • BizarreJelly

I’m glad with the recent delay’s of big games, alot of games feel a bit rushed nowadays so a little extra time could make that extra difference.
