E3 2012 set to be the biggest yet?

While an E3 2012 reveal has been long rumored for the next Xbox, MCV is now reporting that both the Xbox 360 successor and PlayStation 4 will be revealed at E3 this year.

Microsoft has recently alerted its partners of the E3 reveal, according to the site’s sources. Sony has also made it clear it won’t leave third-parties behind this time.

If true, we could be looking at the biggest E3 ever. Nintendo has already said its bringing Wii U to the show. With three new platforms all in one place, we’re eyeing something major.

Stay tuned.

My mouth waters for this E3!

  • Rafi

To be honest, i’m not ready for PS4 or Next Xbox. This current generation still have much to do actually and much power to render like Unreal 3, Frostbite 2, Cry Engine 3 and more.

    • L_kira

@Rafi: Honestly, I think Sony isn’t ready too. They’ve just reached their sweet spot in terms of console sales. But…they did suffer greatly during their delay relative to the Xbox360 release. Well, either way, I agree with you that its too early.

A 2014 or 2015 should be when they plan on releasing these games because most games cannot even utilize properly the current generation. Of course, high-budget games like Skyrim are excluded in that statement.

      • Malcolm Reynolds

@L_kira: Skyrim, like all bethesda games can’t utilize a steady frame rate much less the current gen HW. I am not sure how they constantly get a pass for buggy SW.

As far as the PS3 hitting its sales stride……nothing would stop that even with the PS4 hitting the market. People will still buy the cheaper box with a huge library of great games. The only people that buy new systems at launch are people like me who are collectors and early adopters who love new tech. Again….like me. As the price of the PS3 comes down the sales will only continue to rise. An extremely large portion of the PS2’s 150 million units sold took place after the PS3 launched. Just sayin

    • Phoenix_Wings

@Rafi: It’s okay, even if they announce them now they’d most likely come out near or in 2014 I’d imagine.

  • Devoted

wow… if this happens, we’ll have three new home consoles at the show, plus the “recently” lauched Vita by then. just, wow.

I must admit I’m not too eager to change/upgrade platforms but tech-wise a change/upgrade is on schedule. I thought that due to the current economic climate we’d have Sony and MS showing off new hardware next year for a 2014 launch, but it stands to reason that they’d both accelerate timeframes partially due to the Wii U, partially because of the increasing number of devs that mention hardware constraints (and the tech evolution gap).

Since I almost never get a home console on it’s first one-and-a-ahalf to two years, if they both launch next year I’d be considering (if the available games warrant it) getting one or the other by 2014/2015, which is not that bad.

Now, please, RAM’s cheap as hell, can we please be a bit forward-looking and get, like, 4 to 8GB of system memory? :p

  • Charlie

Why do I seriously doubt this will happen? No matter, PS3 still has life left in her.

  • Revorse

Is it time already? Honestly I’m not ready. I’m still waiting for PS3 to be that RPG powerhouse that the PS2 was.

  • Aldridge517

So what you’re telling me is that we could be moving into PS4’s gen in a few years and the PS3 still hasn’t squeezed out a single Kingdom Hearts game?! Versus XIII is starting to look more and more like a gaming cock block.

  • Malcolm Reynolds

while I am not sure why MS and Sony feel the need to rush their next gen consoles due to the Wii U launch……I can say…..MY BODY IS READY. At least for a PS4…..the only next gen system I will purchase on launch day. This is my first gen I will not buy all 3 on their launch days as I have been burned by the others far too many times with crap HW or gimmicky games that lack substance.

IMO the WiiU is simply catching up to the 360 and PS3 in terms of HW and adding in the tablet controller gimmick much like the Wii Mote waggle gimmick of the Wii before it.

the minute MS and Sony announce their new tech the Wii U will be outdated.

Oh well….I am sure all 3 will have good games but I will play wait and see with 2 of the big 3 next gen.

Honestly I am also not in the least bit ready nor prepared for new systems just yet, and by the looks of thing above in the comments, I am not alone in my thinking. This generation of consoles has lots of life in it, if only developers would put their minds into it. I see no actual need for a new generation, and can see little that cries out for improvement, least of all hardware itself. Rushing a new generation is a bad idea, simple as that.

    • http://xcite79.1up.com Keegs79

@TezChi: Why do you think they are rushing things? Its not like they started the second they heard about the Wii U. They been in development for a long time. This has been a longer console life span than past generations!

Of course you don’t see any need for improvement. You haven’t seen their next consoles yet! The 360 has been living off of Fable, Halo, and Forza and they are being run into the ground. They need a new console to spark new franchises. They have more of a reason to move compared to Sony which has many franchises not yet released this generation. Any case, they likely don’t want to be playing catch up like they have been from the beginning.

Nobody wants to move onto new consoles simply because they don’t want to have to pay for new ones.

  • CheeseCakez

Yes! Five hundred and ninety nine dollars!

  • captainhowdy

Can’t wait. These consoles need an upgrade.

    E3 2012: announce

    E3 2014: launch date

  • vertical09

    600$

  • Zohar127

Definitely ready for new consoles. This generation has already been the longest ever iirc. The major franchises have all run their course and the hardware in these systems is now 4 generations old.

I could write pages on how graphics technology has so vastly outgrown the current gen hardware, but all I really have to do is point anyone to BF3 running on Ultra on a PC or some of the better retexture mods on skyrimnexus. Like this one: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1754

And that’s just one minor aspect of it.

Look at this gen’s amazing looking and technically complicated games such as Uncharted 2/3, Gears of War 3, Dark Souls, Mass Effect 3, Batman Arkham games, Dead Space 2, Bioshock Infinite, etc and imagine what would be capable with -literally- 10 to 15 times the CPU and GPU processing power.

The current gen consoles are barely even capable of displaying games in HD resolutions. Some of the best games out there only look that good because they are being processed at less-than HD and then upscaled. Then you have native 1080 games like Gran Turismo and you get good looking yet horribly aliased premium models on something like only 20% of the cars and almost everything else suffers.

I think the people that say this gen still has a lot of life left in it are talking crazy.

    • http://xcite79.1up.com Keegs79

@Zohar127: The funny thing is people seem to only associate improvement in graphics and not in A.I. and physics. Now with consoles shifting to a more of an entertainment hub, I see dramatic improvements, not only gaming related the but some cool additions nonetheless.

    • Aldridge517

@Zohar127: I agree with what you’re saying, technology makes leaps and bounds every year. We can’t frown upon improvement after all.

    • zerolegacy0

@Zohar127: Finally, someone who has a head on their shoulders. I think that is the most down-to-earth response I have read in a long time.

  • zakou

    599

    • http://xcite79.1up.com Keegs79

@zakou: No system will cost 599 again.

  • Azure’Sora

    AWSUM *O*

  • vertical09

    @keegs79 Wanna bet?

  • Zohar127

“In this economy” no one would be crazy enough to release a console at $600.

I’ll also go out on a limb and say that the disparity between SKUs will be far less significant. Microsoft was smart with releasing a hard drive free cheap xbox as far as getting the people who were on the fence to invest. They needed to get their foot in the door.

The consumer won’t fall for that again and the developers/publishers would probably object to it.

  • Mousse Effect

I don’t see it. Who is this source ? How could someone know that both Microsoft and Sony are planning to announce this at E3 ? The E3 schedule planner ? That doesn’t make sense.
