Sony is in ‘big trouble’ with PlayStation Vita, if a Forbes analysis is anything to go by.
The handheld sold 320,000 units during its first two days of sales in Japan, and only 72,000 in its second week. To compare, the Nintendo 3DS launch kicked off with 370,000 units sold, and 210,000 in its second week. After sales for 3DS continued to lower, Nintendo cut the price of the handheld in an unusually early move from $250 to $170. It later picked up steam with hits such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Monster Hunter Tri G, and the announcement of Monster Hunter 4.
According to Forbes, Sony will “likely be forced” to cut the price of the PlayStation Vita wi-fi model from 24,000 yen (approx. $309) to 20,000 yen (approx. $257). In U.S. terms, it could drop to as low as $199. It cites reasons such as the PSP‘s unpopularity in the west versus its praise in Japan as potential reasons for a PS Vita price cut.
