Rumor: PS4 games early in development, Xbox Next to launch in 2013
Develop sources tip off next-gen update.

Several internal studios have started up work on the first line of PlayStation 4 titles, according to a Develop source “connected to the matter.”

The projects are in their “very early stages,” and are currently only “game concepts,” notes Develop, but can be “jump into full production” if “given the green light.”

Additionally, “multiple sources” reportedly told the site Microsoft is planning to launch “the next generation Xbox” in 2013. Previously, the site was told the new console would see a full unveil at E3 2012.

The site also understands Lionhead is working on the next Fable for launch on the new console. In late August, OXM rumored the next Fable to launch as a “proper, controller-based” game in 2013.

with all due respect there is no need for rumors to assume that maybe it is likely that in the next couple of years something could possibly be announced.

current generation is doing fine as it is right now.

I’ve said this in past rumors about this topic. I’m fine with this gen for the next few years. We don’t need PS4 or Xbox Next right now. Give it till 2016-2018.

@Sal Romano: Agreed. I think this generation has been particularily strong in terms of lastability and honestly even 2013 feels a little early for a PS4 in a way. Of course I am always interested in new hardware, but one I thing I dont want to see are manufacturers rushing, thinking we are all desperate for a new gen to start!

While I agree we don’t need a PS4 considering the quality of exclusives that are still coming out……The Wii needed to be updated the day it shipped and the xbox is certainly starting to show it’s age. Gears 3 looks great…….it doesn’t look leaps and bounds better than Gears 1 which is 5 years old. Uncharted 3 however mops the floor with part 1 and is a marked improvement over U2. I still see growth on PS3….the others….not so much.

I would truly hope Sony would not make the mistake of letting MS release a next gen system a year in advance though……that would be a huge mistake.

@Sal Romano: I agree with you. This current generation is still doing fine. Many developers still don’t really utilize the full power of these consoles, especially on the PS3.

Imagine seeing almost every game that has graphics that’s the same as the Uncharted series…mind blownnnnn

Yeah, I agree, it’s too early for new consoles to drop in, more so when this gen is just getting started for real.

I’ll agree yes this Generation of gaming has been strong, but my Gawd the oversaturation of FPS has really gotten on my last nerve. It just seems like RPG’s have been shoved aside for the first 3-4 years of this GEN. Starting with Xbox 360. I’m not trying to start a argument. I’m just stating what has frustrated me this Gen. unlike last was too many FPS.

Now the market is flooding with RPG’s finally. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy FPS games, but when there’ve been so many and that’s all you hear about in college in FPS is call of Duty. It’ll get on your last nerve too if you heard of FPS almost everywhere you go.

NExt gen. should start ini 2014 the soonest. I’m fine with my PS3.

  • BizarreJelly

I think 2014 should be the beginning of next gen consoles, particularly for the 360 as it’s starting to show its age. The PS3 has a little more life in I reckon.

NOTHING BEFORE 2013 DECEMBER! TKS GOD!

  • Revorse

Even if this was true, this would seem all too soon. It seems like for me anyway that PS3 just really took off last year. Besides I’m still waiting for it to be the RPG master that the PS2 was.

I expected the 360 successor in 2013. It needs to come. Microsoft have bleed their franchise dry on the 360. They need to see a bump on the next console with new IPs published and or developed by Microsoft.

Battlefield 3 shows that we have hit a major roadblock in the extent of console’s capabilities. I am excited to see (as with every new hardware) what they have in store for us.

I think this isn’t unexpected and/or a surprise to anyone, since both consoles are dramatically outdated hardware-wise. This does not mean, in any way, that “crappy games” are the consequence of that and that the faster the next gen comes, the better, but it should be pretty safe to assume that, overall, developers may be feeling a bit strangled on resources.

Also, since “next gen” won’t probably mean “higher resolution” -I really don’t think Sony or MS will get a 4k-ready console out there this soon), it probably won’t bring much higher costs in terms of game development, which would make transitioning easier for developers (depending, of course, on how easy and/or similar it is to make games on the new hardware compared to the old).

On Sony’s side, since they already invested an unholy amount of money on Blu-Ray research and initial drives, the R&D costs for the console will probably be lower when compared to the PS3s (and, I hope, the launch price, too).

Microsoft will jump gens first, I believe, not only because de 360 is (in Western markets, almost a year and a half) older than the PS3, but mainly because it’s a strategy that’s paid off in the past in terms ofearly adoption.

I’m perfectly comfortable with our current gen as-is, specially since the PS3 gained momentum after the Slim version, and currently have a massive backlog of amazing games to go through, so I’m in no rush for the “next gen”. The tech gains, however, will probably be substantial, considering that our “current” consoles run on “old”, 6 year old hardware with severe memory constraints. I honestly can’t imagine what could be acomplished with the equivalent of a current graphics engine (similar to a 6950 or a GTX570) and a decent amount of video and system memory.

I only wish that we could guarantee this kind of “jump” in terms or gameplay and game design… :p

I probably won’t buy any new home console in the first two years after launch (no promises though :p), as I think it’s prudent to wait and enjoy the games of and “end of life” console (usually some of the best RPGs come out then :P), so if MS and Sony launch their new consoles in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 respectively, I probably won’t be getting anything before 2016-2018 (maybe a computer upgrade in between :P), so… plenty of time to enjoy all the current crop of consoles has to offer.

    Cheers

      @Devoted:
Hooray for not buying consoles on launch :3 It’s always better to wait anyway.

  • captainhowdy

Can’t wait. I’m buying the Wii U and waiting for the NextXbox, I’m not buying a 360 because the new one is around the corner.

  • Charlie

    I don’t need a PS4 just now. Heck, I still play PS1 and PS2 games…
