Max Payne 3 will launch across PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in March 2012, Rockstar Games announced today. Initially announced in March 2009, the Rockstar Vancouver sequel has only just recently popped back up from under the radar.
“Max Payne 3 gave us an amazing creative opportunity to evolve one of our most iconic characters,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We’re excited to show fans a modern version of Max that pulls them back into his dark and twisted story.”
The game sees Max Payne, a former New York City detective, start a new life as a private security guard in Sao Paulo, Brazil. When the family he’s hired to protect becomes the target of gangs, he must fight to save them and clear his slate in a bid to “rid himself of the demons that have tortured him for far too long.”
The game will utilize the NaturalMotion physics system used in Grand Theft Auto IV for a “seamless, cinematic action experience.” It uses the latest iteration of Rockstar’s Advanced Game Engine, which offers “highly-refined gameplay, with an extensive range of realistic weaponry, an intelligent cover system and sophisticated Bullet-Time mechanics.” The game itself features an “expansive” single-player campaign, and an “addictive” multiplayer mode that “dynamically alters maps and mode progression for all players in a match.” Multiplayer will feature “a deep reward and leveling system, persistent clans, and multiple strategic load-out options.”
