Wii U will have downloadable GameCube titles

While Wii U is backwards compatible with Wii games, it is not backwards compatible with GameCube titles — on-disc, at least. Speaking to Nintendo Gal at E3 last month, Nintendo of America director of entertainment and trend marketing, Amber McCollom, said that select GameCube titles will be made available as digital downloads.

“You know it’s interesting that you bring up backwards compatibility and Nintendo’s history usually goes back one system,” she said. “The Wii was compatible with GameCube and Wii U will be compatible with Wii and that’s pretty traditional in launches from Nintendo.

“GameCube discs will not be compatible with Wii U, but a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare.”

Wii U launches in 2012.

I did wonder if GC titles would be supported on the Wii U. Still downloadable is pretty good, I hope some good 3rd party titles come to the download service.

If I can use my gamecube controllers and memory cards (or at least copy the info from the memory cards to the Wii U), then I would be excited about this.

I like the fact Nintendo recognize their fans attachments to older games. I still can’t believe Vita will not support umds considering the psp large library.

@FinalFantasy_fangirl: wait what? so what’s the difference here? the Vita still allows you to download PSP games into it?

      • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

@narutomaki: Yeah exactly what I thought.

        @narutomaki:

My comment is about this one line in the article.
“backwards compatibility and Nintendo’s history usually goes back one system,”
I have several psp games(UMD) that I will never be able to play on Vita unless I rebuy them on psn.

@FinalFantasy_fangirl: no not really, they’re just making stuff up or the person they’re interviewing doesn’t know what they’re talking about. SNES couldn’t play NES games, 64 couldn’t play SNES games, GameCube can’t play 64 games, it wasn’t even until the Wii that there was backwards compatibility on a Nintendo Home Console. So saying that backwards compatibility and Nintendo’s history usually goes back one system is a complete lie.

And your agreement to what Nintedo is doing and what the PSP thing still doesn’t make sense, you’re saying that it’s now ok to re-buy gamecube games but still have issues with re-buying PSP games?

    • DarthXehanort

@FinalFantasy_fangirl: … Sony would have to BUTCHER the PSVita to put a UMD drive on it.

They’d be stupid to do that. Enormously stupid.

  • DjangoRaijin

Okay Sony no more excuses where are our downloadable PS2 titles. You’re not pumping out the HD collections fast enough.

  • whiteferrero

    what’s in gameecube anyway?

    • punkmike

@whiteferrero: only games i can think of are eternal darkness, super mario sunshine, and resident evil 4. im pretty sure there are more games on the cube that worth noticing, but i never really played the gamecube as much as my nintendo 64 or playstation 2…so i guess i missed out on a lot of great nintendo games.
