PlayStation Vita facial recognition tech demoed

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan demonstrated PlayStation Vita’s facial recognition technology at the Game Tools & Middleware Forum 2011 in Tokyo this week. A webcam-style application saw two users chatting through virtual avatars that followed their every facial action, including head turning and lip moving.

The company also showed off an augmented reality demo, which brought a dinosaur to life on the PlayStation Vita screen.

Though I probably won’t use it personally, the virtual avatars seem like they’d work really well on the video chat function. It’s something different from just seeing your own Mug and looks really quite accurate on the motions.

the AR looks fun as well. I wonder if AR will be incorporated into games more than it currently is on 3DS. At the moment, the only AR I have used on the system have been the cards, which, whilst fun for 10 minuites, are hardly full games in themselves. I would like to see, on both Vita and 3DS, more innovative use of the AR function.

I think I would use this as much as possible if I could be that lion.

The blinking is sort of creepy though. I think they need to adjust the thresholds for that or something lol.
