Final Fantasy Versus XIII update

This week’s Famitsu has its promised Final Fantasy Versus XIII update, which comes in the form of an interview with director Tetsuya Nomura. The update marks the first bit of Versus XIII news since the Square Enix 1st Production Department Premiere in early January.

Like Final Fantasy XIII-2, the camera in Final Fantasy Versus XIII can be altered during cutscenes. According to Nomura, the camera manipulation takes a page from the first-person shooter genre, adding that event scenes do not disturb the gameplay flow.

Previous Final Fantasy titles saw the use of different character models, often with higher polygon count, for event scenes. With Versus XIII, a “unified” model is being used for both event scenes and gameplay, Nomura revealed.

A small update on combat, Nomura said that battle sequences are dynamic, meaning, there aren’t any loading screens or shifting screens between battle and world sequences. They’re one in the same.

Three new images were shown to the Famitsu journalist interviewing Nomura. He couldn’t believe that one of the screenshots was a real-time capture. The visuals were excellent, according to the journalist, and a lot of work went into the graphics and lighting. The screenshots show off different areas of the city. The first image showed an arcade in a rough-looking part of a town (this is the shot that amazed the Famitsu journo); another showed how the lighting effects are reflected in the day or night.

Voice recording is currently in progress. The voice acting is being done as the game is developed, meaning the actors have to come in during different points to record.

Also, a Noctis phone will be released at some point (like the Cloud phone [Panasonic P900iV] that released with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children).

Final Fantasy Versus XIII isn’t in full production, quite yet. Nomura revealed the game is currently only being worked on by the development team’s core staff. They’re right now experimenting with a lot of “challenges,” and are preparing to enter full production.

Nomura doesn’t know when he’ll be able to share more details surrounding Versus XIII, though he apologizes for the incredibly long wait. Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced at Sony’s E3 2006 press conference for PlayStation 3.

Thanks, FinalFantasy.net.

it may not be much but its enough to keep my faith in the game, and hopefully at TGS he announces when it will release. I’ve been waiting far too long Nomura.

    • DarthXehanort

@Sleepygamer: These geniuses can take as much time as they need. The game will be mind-blowing when it releases, and that is all that matters to me.

  • Revorse

It may be blind fandom, but I honestly don’t believe Versus XIII will be a disappointment. Even with small bits of information that has been scattered around I have high hopes for the final project, WHENEVER it is released.

@Revorse: All Nomura games are awesome

    • DarthXehanort

      @KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler: Marry me.

@Revorse: Like KingKellogg said, every Nomura game is awesome. This won’t be an exception. In fact, I’m expecting this to literally be my favourite FF game once it releases.

      • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

@DarthXehanort: The only thing that has me worried is that altering cutscenes thing,I hope its just an option and not like it was in batman or some fps

        • DarthXehanort

@KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler: We’ll have to see how they do it, but I expect Nomura to ace the story.

          • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

@DarthXehanort: Well hes an amazing strory teller, but that 1 thing can effectively ruin the story for me.

            • DarthXehanort

@KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler: Oh, I understand. I’d just say that you should hold onto your faith for now. It’s hard to imagine Nomura messing up a story.

              • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

@DarthXehanort: True,im just not wanting to be dissapointed….Ive hyped myself up for this game so much already ya know

  • ekka4shiki

They’re not lying when they said it’s a small update ._.

Wow I’m really surprised that the game is in the voice acting stage at this point. That means it’s nearing the end of development!

*Puts on speculation cap* Since it’s already reached this stage, and if it has no more delays, it could probably see a release within the next 6-9 months. I’m hoping they will announce a release date by TGS.

Then again this is Versus we’re talking about so a realistic time frame would be sometime during 2036 when I can play with my grandchildren on the PS9.

Edit: Scratch that, I just read on Andriasang, that they are just about to enter full production. Which means I have no idea when this is gonna be released.

  • whiteferrero

hahaha. hoping for this next year! :)

  • LordKaiser

This game is marked in my wish list. Until now i’m very interested in this game for what I saw on the trailers.

  • TheDarkCloud

I’m going to make an assumption.
I think the game is very advanced, as the friend zerolegacy said, if they are recording the voices, it is because the large percentage of the game is done.

When they finish with XIII-2, all people are going to work only at Versus, fixing details and tweaking things.
Then from the release of the XIII-2 will have to wait up to one year for Versus no more nor less.

XIII-2 is like a transition to keep the fans entertained a little while. Because I believe that to this point we are all waiting for Versus!!

  • KingKelloggTheWaffleHaggler

    I Can Not wait!!!!!

  • FAUNA

So incredibly stoked for VERUS 13 & 13-2. JAPANESE VOICE TRACK OPTION PLEASE.

    • zerolegacy0

@FAUNA: There already is a Japanese voice track option, it’s called importing lol.
With Mamoru Miyano playing one of the leads I will definitely be importing this one. Not to mention I’ll have finished this game before the west ever sees it. Oh Glorious Nippon.

  • standtall

This game looks absolutely amazing. Even if it comes out in a year, That will be 3 FF titles in 3 years. Honestly, Square is doing some good work, fairweather fans can get left behind.

  • milramyah

When do you think we’ll be seeing those screenshots?

  • DarthXehanort

Delicious. @_@ I am way too excited for this upcoming masterpiece.

Also, Sal, you didn’t mention the part where they talk about the future of the Kingdom Hearts series!

  • K00lKat
