First Wii U online details

The first bit of details surrounding Wii U’s online functionality have come out. Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, Ubisoft producer Adrian Blunt confirmed that the online platform will ditch friend codes and have accounts / friends lists similar to Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network.

“There’s a few things on that,” said Blunt, regarding online. “The first is the ability for individuals to make accounts. Rather than a machine having an account, each individual user has an account.”

Asked if it was near the same experience an Xbox LIVE user would get, Blunt replied: “Yeah, exactly.”

Another big improvement noted by the producer is the friends system.

“Rather than using friend codes, which we’ve had in the past, we’re able to connect players in a much easier way, which allows us to have a community that’s playing together in the game.”

Wii U is out in 2012.

This is a good sign for the Wii U’s online.

The friend code system was frustrating for a lot of users.

I know this is off topic but Sal did you happen to hear anything about Xenoblade and Last Story being localized at E3. I’ve heard rumors they would be coming to Europe. I would buy a Wii for those two and catch up on other titles.

This is good news, but should be expected, as goes for a lot with this next Wii system.

Sounds good to me. I think friend codes themselves were improved on 3DS, altough many still do not like the system. Having a more “XBOX Live” feeling system is sure to work well for online-centric gamers. Any news on a Virtual Console or E-Shop on Wii U yet actually?
