Square Enix planning several new IPs
May 13, 2011 / 12:44 PM EDT / (@salromano)

Square Enix is targeting the addition of several new intellectual properties to their hand of development studios. The company’s fiscal year 2011 results indicate more originality is to come from the Japanese publisher.

The publisher’s current targets are:

  • Tokyo studio (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts) is targeting the addition of two original IPs.
  • Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) is targeting one new IP.
  • Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex, Theif 4) is targeting one new IP.
  • IO Interactive (Hitman) is targeting one new IP.
  • Wimbledon  (Championship Manager) is targeting one new IP.

This would make for a total of five new IPs to come out of Square Enix. Will we see them soon? All in due time, we suppose.

Wow, Im glad, but suprised after that huge loss they just posted!

I’m down with EIDOS MONTREAL & CRYSTAL DYNAMICS, but everything else should be developed in Japan for PS3/360 using the Crystal Tools tech (PARASITE EVE please!), with JAPANESE VOICE TRACK OPTIONS. & NO ‘WESTERNIZING’ & NO HANDHELDS. FF 13-2, FF VERSUS 13, DEUS EX, THIEF 4, & TOMB RAIDER are some of my most anticipated titles..

Fauna, you know if you capitalize half the words in your comment it just makes it harder to read your post, and less likely for someone to actually read it.

I didn’t even read it this time, because it’s bothering my eyes.

why do people keep picking on fauna?

hmm, for tokyo studio, i hope they don’t get overburdened. and anyway, it’s time for some new ips square. i loved a lot of your one-shot (?) back in the ps1 era.

I would also like to see more focus on the PS3/360/PC from Square Enix.

You can pretty much pencil in those console for the games coming from Eidos/CD/other NA/EU studios Square Enix owns now.

As for the tokyo studio, where most of the recent scrutiny has been in the last few years… I wouldn’t be surprised if what narutomaki said above isn’t mostly true. I know many JP developers have shifted focus to the western audience, such as Capcom, but…I wouldn’t say Square Enix has done that yet with the tokyo studio, and after they purchased Eidos and opened a new studio in America, etc. .. It would be very unsurprising if they continue to focus on the JP audience when it comes to games being made in the tokyo studio. Which pretty much means, a large quantity of the games coming out of that studio will be portables.

They already have ways to cater to western gamers, so they don’t have many reasons to change things in tokyo, they have to make the games the JP gamers will buy, and right now those games are on portable systems.

As much as we and the developers wish money and business decisions didn’t play a huge part in gaming, they do. We’ve seen with games like FF14, sometimes business decisions can lead to a game releasing unfinished. Which is why I’m not always quick to attack the developers these days.

    Edit: (Removed my rant lol.)

If this new IP is meant for 3DS and NGP , then i wouldn’t be too surprised …
They need to release some titles for those platform anyway …

But here i am , still hoping it’s new JRPG for 360/PS3 :p
