Rumor: NGP named PlayStation Vita [Update]
May 29, 2011 / 08:15 AM EDT / (@salromano)

Sony’s January-announced handheld, currently codenamed NGP (Next Generation Portable), is called PlayStation Vita, if a new pre-E3 rumor is to be believed.

“Vita” is the Italian word for “life.”

According to Games Pundit, who received the information from an anonymous source, “this will be the definite and final name of the new system Sony will bring out at the end of 2011.”

A scan of the handheld sporting the PlayStation Vita name, reportedly from an E3 proof sheet, showed up after the rumor’s original posting.

As with all rumors, take this with a grain of salt. Confirmation / denial should arrive soon enough.

Update 12:34pm: A source has told Ripten that PlayStation Vita is, in fact, the name of the platform and that the untitled Uncharted game announced for the handheld is titled Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

It’s still a rumor, but more support adds for more credibility.

    Vita?
Don’t like that name and the logo on the NGP looks like crap.
    This is probably a fake.

Hmm, the picture does look kind of fake, but who knows? I’ve been wrong about these things in the past.

I dont mind the name Vita myself; and I had guessed previously that they wouldnt call it PSP due to various issues like the Go. Vita also fits in with the recent “PlayStation Life” adverts I have seen around.

Personally, I think Vita sounds very… dumb.

What a terrible name…. If this is true NGP sounds so much better.

It’s a stupid name, but I think ti may be real. I don’t understand why they don’t just call it PSP2.

I’m not sure about that picture… the Uncharted title is very possible, but I’m not buying Vita yet.

I recall the Move having all of these codenames and crap before they announced it was going to be the playstation move.

I’ve been calling it the NGP, but I figured they would change the name. I kinda always thought it would be PSP2 as well.

Just have to wait for E3, I don’t really like vita either…

I’d be in the near empty boat of those who like the name.
It does sound a bit ‘sellout’ like though, which I don’t really associate with Sony.

I don’t put a lot of care into what the systems I’m using are called. Vita sounds fine to me. Remember how ridiculous everyone thought “Wii” sounded? Xbox360? What does that even mean? These things rarely make any sense and are more a product of corporate research than coming up with something that sounds “cool”

That said, I’d guess they didn’t want to call it PSP2 because the PSP brand is kind of a joke everywhere in the world other than Japan. You say “PSP” to the average gamer and they first thing they’ll think about is piracy or the fact that it has very few good games on it.

The picture is probably a fake, Sony wouldn’t have “PSVITA”, it would more likely to be “VITA” if the name was actually going to be Vita.

    PSVITA looks stupid and tacky.

  • RyougaZell

Heh… I add myself to the lonesome boat that like the name.

lol at vita. sounds just about every cereal, or wheat-based product, or even water, and even some real estate properties.

Calling it simply PSP2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>better than Vita.
