Rumor: Entry level NGP tech downgraded
May 26, 2011 / 10:35 PM EDT / (@salromano)

Sony’s entry level Next Generation Portable has received a bit of a downgrade, if an 01net report it to be believed.

According to the site, Sony has halved the RAM of the version without 3G connectivity from 512MB to 256MB. The 16GB of internal flash memory originally said to be included has been dropped in favor of external storage, as well.

Sony is reportedly downgrading the hardware in order to compete with pricing of the Nintendo 3DS, which sells for an MSRP of $249.99.

Thanks, Industry Gamers.

Hmm. I can’t say i’m a big fan of this.

So I guess with the drop in storage and memory, we’re going to see games that’ll run better on the 3G version. And some games that won’t run on the WiFi version at all?
Could make things a bit more difficult for developers.

This is probably the reason to reduce cost due to the psn outrage. IT also seems like a marketing ploy to released the COMPLETE version with the full specs and possible 4G in the future. Just a thought

      I forgot 4G existed.

Now that I’ve remembered — Sony should totally nix the 3G and make it 4.

Not sure what to say, I’m just going to write it off as a rumor. We should get every little detail about the NGP come E3. They say they want to release it this year, so one would expect as much.

NGP is looking pretty nice. Since RPG’s are almost non existent is the launch title I’m going to hold off for a while. And the $250 price sits pretty nice with me

    Son of a biz….

I know 256 MB is still a fair bit for any mobile, but even still… I want to keep this thing for a while, so the downgrade hurts. I was planning on getting the sans-3G version.

I really hate multiple SKUs, but this is another level of dissatisfaction. Two SKUs with different amounts of RAM? That burns…

Hope to heck it’s not true.

i highly doibt sony would spit the ram on sku . i could see them removing hdd and removing the 3g parts should be enough to make the 100 dollar differece between the two sku

    what?!?!?!

i guess they just want to compete with the 3DS which is reasonable i guess.

will wait how game turned out in this thing

Ive never really liked multiple SKU’s to begin with, and reducing RAM just seems odd. I understand Sony need to compete with the pricing of the 3DS, but I hope they dont gimp the system because of it. I personally think a price of around the same as the 3DS, or maybe a little more, is still OK by me.
