NGP may see delay due to Japan quake

The launch of Sony’s new portable gaming system, the Next Generation Portable (or NGP), might see a delay thanks to the recent earthquake and tsunami disaster in Tohoku, Japan. Speaking with Bloomberg, Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton said the portable may only launch in one region in time for this year’s holiday season.

“It may be the straw that says ‘maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year,’” Tretton told the site. A delayed launch may give developers more time to create games for the platform, he said.

Unfortunately, Tretton remained mum on which region might get NGP first.

Japan, Europe, I love you, but this better launch first in North America!

Nay. It shall launch first in Europe. NA gets all the goodies first :(

Fat chance :-) Europe has always been the biggest audience for Sony ( after Japan of course ), so I would think they will release it here first.

There’s been no real news on whether it’s region locked or not yet, correct?
It’s unlikely Sony would do anything like that.

I haven’t heard of a Sony system getting released outside it’s native country first.. So i’d be expecting Japan to get it first.

Still hanging out for more NGP details though – guess I’ll need to be patient and wait a few more months.

When was it due to launch? Around the Fall/Winter?

Yea I think so. For some reason I’m thinking October/November, but I might have imagined that. Seems like what the date was meant to be though. Pretty sure it was Q4 2011 originally.

Well there’s absolutely NO chance of it launching in Europe first, and Id likely say with Sony’s usual launch plans, Japan would get it first. But who knows? Anyway, a delay due to the quake etc is not unexpected.
