Sony to re-release PSP games on NGP
January 31, 2011 / 08:09 AM EDT / (@salromano)

Sony’s planning to re-release select titles from their library of PSP games for their Next Generation Portable (NGP), the company’s told Gigazine.

Additionally (this was known since last week’s event), you’ll be able to download PSP games released on the PlayStation Store and play them on your NGP.

The re-releases Sony’s mentioned today involve re-distributing the game on NGP’s new card format.

As for those who’ve already built up a library of games on UMD, Sony says that they’re currently investigating the possibilities of not having to re-purchase your collection. Though, they have no plans of creating a ‘UMD Reader,’ of any sort.

Thanks, Andriasang.

Hmm, this is interesting, though I’m slightly concerned about them only “investigating the possibilities” of BC with existing UMD’s. I would hate it for them to make it so that any PSP game would have to be re-bought to play on NGP. BC may be seen as trivial to some, but to others it’s a make-or-break purchasing decision. It will be interesting to see how this pans out

I think Sony is looking for a do-over and wants to avoid the mistakes they made with the PSP models. That would also explain why they’re calling this (for now) the NGP rather than just naming it the successor of the PSP line-up.

I think they want to keep the failed brand name of the PSP away from the NGP so they can start fresh. That also means keeping those pesky UMD’s out of the picture completely. No one really liked them which (arguably again) was likely the chief reason why the PSPGo was created.

Also I think the whole idea of BC is not as relevant as it once was. Sony removed BC from the PS3 years ago and while it was a bit of a stinker for a year or most people have moved on. Too many great games out and coming out to worry about a 9 year old PS2 title.

I think Sony’s probably going to pull a “PSP Classics” and release the new games to work with the dual analog sticks and/or other features NGP offers. Since I don’t own a PSP, I personally don’t mind, but I do understand how PSP owners may feel.

I’m just hoping they’ll release the Squeenix titles, too. I still need to pick up Crisis Core and I certainly don’t want to miss out on Type-0!

Crisis Core is what made me a get a psp!

Im still surprised they made this device without thinking of backwards compatibility they should know by now how important it is to there consumers. Im not interested in downloading everything I bought already.

Wow. Couldn’t have asked for anything more… online and retail distribution… jeebus.

I think they have been looking for a solution to umd since the PSP go. I’ve always felt it was business and legal issues that kept them from releasing a program or accessory to easily create a solution.

Hopefully they are close to a solution by now, and I’m not talking about just ignoring it.
