First Star Software’s 1984 video game classic, Boulder Dash, is set to receive a retro revival on Xbox LIVE Arcade and PC. Announced today by Kalypso Media and First Star, Boulder Dash XL is bringing back the classic gameplay of the original with a new look, new game modes and more.

Boulder Dash has always held a special place in the hearts of retro-gamers, and now, we’re very pleased to be bringing a modernized version to Xbox LIVE Arcade and Windows PC,” said Simon Hellwig, Global Managing Director of Kalypso Media. “First Star Software and Catnip Games are great partners, and we expect gamers will definitely love their modernized take on a beloved classic.”

The game will feature high-definition visuals in 720p, four new game modes (Arcade, Puzzle, Zen, and Time Challenge), a “Retro” mode with 25 classic caves, a new scoring system, four “beautiful and varied” game worlds, over 150 brand new caves, and online leaderboards.

Unfortunately, Kalypso didn’t mention a release date. They did, however, provide some nice first screenshots. Check them out at the gallery.

I played the original Boulderdash series all the time as a young kid. Sorry, but this to me just seems totally awful.. I would have preferred a straight port – like the Virtual Console version available on Wii. Think I’ll stick with that.

Those who haven’t played the original might like this, though.
