Inafune: Devil May Cry 5 to have a “western touch”
by [@salromano] at 11:42 AM EDT, September 2, 2010 .

Capcom Global Head of Production Keiji Inafune has revealed that Devil May Cry 5 is in development, and that they’re applying a bit of a “western touch” in order to attract overseas consumers. Apparently, even though the franchise has a well-numbered fan-base, sales aren’t so great on the western front.

Devil May Cry 5 is a game that, when started development, this will change a lot in relation to the above.” Inafune told 3DJuegos. “The reason is that, despite the franchise has some very loyal followers, their sales are not particularly high, especially overseas.

“For this reason, it is likely that in the fifth chapter will incorporate certain “Western touch” to make it more attractive to American and European players.”

Earlier this year, it was rumored that Ninja Theory is currently working on Devil May Cry 5. Ninja Theory refused to deny that claim. Around late June, Inafune said that Devil May Cry 5 would be “custom-tailored to what the fans want”.

I wonder exactly what they mean by a ‘Western’ touch. This sort of news is always quite interesting in that developers can either recreate or destory a franchise by trying to change it’s very identity. Moreover, I am usually on the skeptical side when a Japanese developer tries to add an overarching Western influence to a series, as often I feel it would be better off simply left ‘Japanese’.

In the case of Devil May Cry; the franchise has it’s fair share of ups and downs, with DMC4 being (in my opinion) a good game but still pale in comparison to DMC3 and of course the original. Would a ‘Western’ touch help or hinder the series? I really don’t know.

  2. Hmm im not sure of this “western touch” will make the franchise better. i mean look at Silent Hill and Castlevania. Silent Hill is not a scary like it’s used to be i mean all the elements of the game have been altered and such. it would be good if it was a new IP. same as the New Castlevania. I kinda prefer if koji igarashi team would head the project while mercury studios would just do the gameplay or a new IP. Curse of Darkness and Lament of Innocence are the best 3D castlevania games iv’e played. the only complaint is the exploration and combat which can be easily fixed.

hope the DMC franchise spirit is intact. i don’t want to see any quicktime events in combat, maybe cut scenes but combat is a NO.
