Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced a new “PlayStation Protection Plan” for your Sony consoles today. The plan extends your PlayStation system warranty by one or two years – allowing you a free fix when your console needs to be hospitalized.
Obviously, this comes at a price, but is probably worth it in the long run.
You can purchase an extra one or two years that start directly after the original one-year manufacturer’s warranty expires. The Protection Plan can only be purchased by PS3 and PSP owners who are still within their original warranty. Here are the plans:
- PS3 – 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
- PSP – 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
- PSP Accidental Damage – 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)
If anybody’s looking to purchase these plans, we suggest the two year. It’s only $10-15 more, so why purchase the one year?

I wonder if this covers all PS3 consoles or just the slimline models?
I’m sure it’ll cover the Phat PS3′s so long as you buy it now or have bought it within the year.
You can still get a phat one with Uncharted 1 for $599.
I’m considering trading in my phat for a slim. The fan kicks on way too often and although I own about a dozen PS2 games I never play them so I’ll probably trade it in then get the 2-year warranty for the cost of a game.
Totally worth it.
