PS3 Firmware 3.40 Incoming?

An unannounced version 3.40 firmware update for PlayStation 3 arrived in developers’ hands late last week and isn’t too far off for consumers, if a source of TheSixthAxis is to be believed.
Usually, there isn’t that big a difference between the time a developer receives a new firmware update and the time a consumer receives a new firmware update. Sometimes, there’s a bigger gap, but sometimes, there isn’t.
Their source has said that its usually just a few weeks between testing and public release before firmware goes out.
In late April, it was rumored that background patching is on the way for a future firmware update. This may just be it.

I hope this is it and that they also allow you to download a patch without the game disc.
Or maybe this is the big revision that’s being rumored. Although it seems like they would just call it 4.0 or maybe give it a special name like MS did with the NXE (although adding the word “New” wasn’t a good decision because eventually everything new becomes old).
