PlayStation 3 Sells Over 35 Million

Sony’s PlayStation 3 is almost neck and neck with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 today. Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed during its annual 2009 fiscal results this morning that the black console has sold 35.7 million units as of today, shipping 13 million of those units just last year.
“Having just surpassed nine consecutive months of year over year growth for PS3 hardware and a revenue increase of 32 percent for PS3 software since last April, we look at today’s earnings as a proof point to our business model,” said SCEA president Jack Tretton.
Xbox 360 sales hit 40 million in late April. The Microsoft console launched a year prior to Sony’s platform.

Great news for Sony to be only 5 million units behind the 360. I can’t remember the numbers but I’m sure at one point that the PS3 was more than 10 or 12 million units behind the 360 so it shows that the slim and the price drop had a real impact and that 360 sales have probably slowed a little bit in order for Sony to catch up.
Didn’t hurt to have a great new marketing campaign as well as some great exclusives.
