Final Fantasy XIII Falls Off The April NPD
by [@salromano] at 08:42 PM EDT, May 14, 2010 .

Selling over a 1.3 million units in its release month of March, Final Fantasy XIII is no where to be seen in the April 2010 NPD charts. Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell: Conviction took the top spot, moving 486.1K units.

Odd, we know. I’d assume a Final Fantasy title can move a few hundred thousand in the months after they release. According to this, Final Fantasy XIII hasn’t even managed over a hundred thousand in April.

Here’s the April breakdown:

1. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction (360) – 486.1K
2. Pokemon SoulSilver Version (DS) – 242.9K
3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) – 200.3K
4. Pokemon HeartGold Version (DS) – 192.6K
5. God of War III (PS3) – 180.3K
6. Wii Sports Resort w/ Wii Motion Plus (Wii)
7. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (360)
8. Wii Fit Plus w/ Wii Balance Board (Wii)
9. Just Dance (Wii)
10. Super Street Fighter IV (PS3)
11. Monster Hunter Tri (Wii)
12. Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City (PS3)
13. New Super Mario Bros.
14. Super Street Fighter IV (360) – 108.0K
15. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (PS3) – <100K
16. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360)
17. MLB 10: The Show
18. Mario Kart w/ Weel (Wii)
19. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
20. Major League Baseball 2K10 (360)

Maybe next month?

Thanks, Silent Chef.

Final Fantasy XIII was a good game but certainly not a great game. There are far better RPG’s out there. Square Enix seriously needs to go back to there roots for the fans sake. I am not serprised it’s not on the list. I’ve been playing Final Fantasy games for as long as i can remember and have loved every one of them eccept XIII, I was just getting so bored it wasn’t funny.

This is quite strange imo. I won’t be worried though until next month’s charts come in as it might be creeping back up after a slower month or something.

The game seems to be selling well in the UK with plenty of number 1 spots in shops and plenty of advertising still running in the main chains.

Considering the great competition it had in March, and lack of multi-player, selling 1.3 million units last month was a fine achievement.

I think most of the fans already got a copy of the game, the same type of thing happened with 13 in Japan, maybe not to this extent, but like I mentioned above, better competition to deal with. That and multiplayer being so popular gives some games better legs to sell more copies over time.

Like most of our top selling games, single player only games that sell well are rare, take a look at the above list.

I see one definitive single player game in God of War 3, which is impressive for a console exclusive. All the other games can be played with a friend or have online features/multiplayer.

I think that it’s a problem for Xbox owners. FF13 was a total hit in Japan, and we all know that this game is made mainly for Japanede audience. If the sales are not good – we probably won’t see another FF for Xbox, but still i don’t think they’d consider cancelling PS3 English version. And about the game itself – it was good, but let’s be honest – Square can do better, and let’s hope they will next time. Stil, i completely don’t understand this hype and comparison to Mass Effect 2 which was at least “not so good” in comparison to ME1.

I am not giving up on Final Fantasy cause of 1 bad game.
Square Enix have been creating the best of RPG gaming for years and i’m sure the next game will be what the fans expect. Square needs to relise that Playstation is the only place for Final Fantasy games. They will only be hurting the series if they do otherwise.

As im for the idea of multiplatform gaming – im strongly against it in the case when it means deteriorating the quality of the game – which was definitely the case with FF13. Let us hope that FFvs13 will be better, and SE will take at least some of the criticism into account.
