Background patching on the way to PS3?
by [@salromano] at 02:18 PM EDT, April 27, 2010 .

The ability to patch a game in the background is on the way to PlayStation 3, if an unnamed source of TSA’s is to be believed.

Normally, when a developer patches a PlayStation 3 game, you’ll start it up only to be greeted with a screen prompting you to download an update where after you will then have to sit and watch that update download. Some patches are big and take long to download, as well.

With this, you’d be able to grab patches for games that you’re not playing in the background as you play another game or do something else on your PS3. Very convenient.

We’ll keep you updated on this. For now, consider it a rumor.

Yeah this would definately be a welcome addition if it turns out to be true. I really dislike having to wait for these updates to apply when they take a long time to download. Been in the UK with slow internet speeds doesn’t help either.

I hope this turns out to be more than a rumor!

It would be nice if they implemented a setup like the iPhone. Of course everything is downloaded but it would be really cool if you could go to your game saves or something and activate an update then let it download in the background.

Or maybe Sony can add a new section to the PS Store for all game updates. I wouldn’t mind waiting a few seconds for the game to install those updates once I’ve launched them or put the game disc in but like everyone else having to sit there and watch the progress bar roll is a bit of a pain.

The problem is now that this rumor is out it just makes the pain of waiting for updates that much more excruciating.

Let’s hope the rumor turns into reality.
