SCEA: We should’ve published Demon’s Souls
by [@salromano] at 07:51 PM EDT, March 15, 2010 .

Bringing Demon’s Souls to the West from Japan was a tough process. As you may know, the game’s originally published by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan in its homeland. However, in North America, the game’s published by Atlus.

So why didn’t Sony Computer Entertainment America jump on the Demon’s Souls train?

Both Sony’s North American and European branches passed on Demon’s Souls they figured the game’s niche wouldn’t catch on and wouldn’t sell well in the West.

After Atlus published the game in North America, demand became increasingly high. October 2009 NPDs reveal the game had sold over 150,000 copies. And if VGChartz is to believe, the game has already sold over half a million in North America alone.

Sony regret passing on the game, however.

“That was a mistake,” Sony rep Yeonkyung Kim admits. “It should have come out as a first-party title.”

A mistake it was.
