Square Enix‘s Final Fantasy XIII has received a mixture of reviews so far. Some people say it’s great while others say it doesn’t deserve to bear the Final Fantasy name. Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama took a crack at explaining these Western review scores.
“We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like… [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you’re given that much freedom.”
Or, maybe, I don’t know. This one’s just a shot in the dark. Maybe those reviewers just didn’t enjoy the game as much as they’d enjoy another good Final Fantasy, say VII or X. Or it could be the game’s linearity that people seem to mention so often.
For comparison’s sake, GameMaster gave the game an 81/100 while PSM3 gave it a 70/100. Then, Official PlayStation Magazine UK gave the game a 90/100, saying it “makes the hours pass likes minutes”.
Who to believe? When we get it, we’ll let you know! (wink)
