Square Enix “taking root” in 2010, says CEO
by [@salromano] at 06:02 AM EDT, January 4, 2010 .

Square Enix president and CEO Yoichi Wada issued a public statement today for the new year saying that 2010 will see the publisher “taking root,” and creating competition towards other media formats.

“In the near future, the rate of convergence between video games and other digital entertainment content will only continue to accelerate”, Wada said in the statement (via Kotaku). “It is for that reason we will make 2010 a year of taking root, in which we use this environment of change as an opportunity for establishing a strong foothold with which to lead the global entertainment industry”.

He’s basically saying that “in 2010 we want to start moving towards competing with movie studios”. Whether that’s good or bad, I cannot say.

It could mean more than movies as “other digital entertainment” could mean almost anything. But considering they have games on all the major platforms as well as handhelds it would make sense that they’re probably going into the movie business.

But “digital entertainment” is such an ambiguous term it could mean almost anything.

Hmm I wonder what they mean, exactly? It seems like they are wanting to branch out to the entire “Entertainment Industry”, which could mean anything, really.

I’m interested to hear more on this, does it mean SE are going to make more movies or simply ‘compete’ against movies with their games? (which are imho far better already considering modern cinema)
