Turns out Sony’s motion controller is not called “Gem”, which was instead an early prototype name for the new hardware.

“The term ‘Gem’ was an early code name for the product,” SCEA director of communications Patrick Seybold told Kotaku. “We haven’t announced final name at this point.”

This comes from earlier after EA CEO John Riccitiello mentioned both Sony and Microsoft’s motion controllers during the UBS 37th Annual Global Media Conference, naming them “Natal and Gem”.

Looks like we have more waiting to do until we finally find out.

I liked Sphere better. I really hope they don’t go with Gem in the end. I think Nintendo got lucky with the Wii name; if Sony’s trying to go over the women and grandmas then “Gem” might work but if they’re trying to appeal to us hardcore gamers I don’t think Gem is going to sit to well with us.

We still might by it but I think they should go with something a bit more masculine.

If they want to stay with jewel-like names I think Onyx could work. Plus “Gem” is too close to “Jem”, a Scooby-Doo-like mystery/action show with a female band.

Any kid (like me) that grew up watching Dragon’s Lair, Turbo Teen and Mighty Orbots in the early 80′s (seems like such a long time ago) on Saturday mornings knows about Jem. She was “truly outrageous”.
