Netflix on PlayStation 3 is here… well, almost; Friday morning for Jonathan (image). Yes, Netflix has begun shipping PlayStation 3 streaming discs to those who requested one so they can stream movies and TV shows to their console.

Looked up my account and my disc was shipped out today!
It’ll be a little slow going to put the disc in each time I want to watch videos but it’s a small price to pay for having the service now versus waiting until late next year for the 360 exclusivity to end.
My hope is that Sony will work very closely with Netflix to create a unique browsing experience that separates it from the 360 version.
It would be cool if they gave you a box. =P
@ incredibilistic
yeah because the 360 browsing is crap for netflix and also for the ps3 now. Its so limiting. I just do it all on my pc then you can access on the system. Hopefully that improves later on.
@ Sal
That would be awesome haha
What would be interesting is if they integrated this into the PSN Store. I’m pretty sure all the networks and movie studios that Netflix has are already represented in the PSN Store so it’d just be a matter of adding a “STREAMING” option next to RENT and BUY.
Regarding rentals, the biggest issue, regardless of whether it’s integrated or not, is the rental business for the PSN Store will most likely drop once Netflix grows more popular on the PS3. Even if people rent new release movies — as an HD download will ALWAYS be better than an HD stream — they probably won’t bother renting TV shows. I know I wouldn’t. I’d still buy episodes that I really wanted but I why bother renting anything for $3 or $4 bucks when I can either stream that same movie/TV show at no additional charge (other than my Netflix subscription) or just put it in my DVD queue and get it in the mail in about a day?!
What Sony should do is add some extra content similar to what Apple is doing with iTunes Extras when you rent/buy a move via iTunes. It’s usually nothing more than a single interview or some behind-the-scenes stuff but it’s at least more than what Netflix offers, which is nothing but the film itself.
I’ve never rented/purchased a movie from iTunes that had the iTunes Extras but I can’t imagine that extra content is only for Apple.
Overall, though, studios will need to really “bring it” when it comes to Blu-ray features if they want to be able to live along side the dominance that Netflix is has in the rental market.
