Xbox 360 to compete with PS3 Slim on Sept. 1st with new $299 price
by [@salromano] at 05:15 PM EDT, August 21, 2009 .

360-299-drop

If the local news flyers for GameStop, Wal-Mart, and Meijer are to be believed, an Xbox 360 price drop will evidently occur on September 1st, the same day the PlayStation 3 slim model launches. The price? The same price as the new PlayStatiion 3, $299.

Above you’ll see the scan from the latest Wal-Mart flyer. Is the price drop a coincidence or was it planned to compete with the PlayStation 3 drop? Either way, they’re in hard competition now.

Confirmed – Xbox360 Elite to drop to $299 on September 1st [VGChartz]

The problem with this is that they can’t really advertise it…

And now the REAL side-by-side comparisons of what both systems offer may actually shake the stranglehold that MS has on the market.

Now that both systems are the same price the included Blu-ray, wifi and the ability to play online for free could actually start to hurt 360 sales. Not even mentioning the fact that there’s no HD drive in the 360 other costs like batteries in the 360 controller versus lithium batteries in the Dual Shock and, again, the $99 adapter to go wireless should be topics of discussion when people are shopping for a new console this season.

Moreover being only $50 bucks more than a Wii, analysts’ predictions that PS3 sales will increase by 40% to 60% because of the price drop could come true. A guy I met this week in a training class pre-ordered one online the moment he saw the Slim and heard me ramble about how much more value (notice I didn’t say the PS3 was better) he would get out of a PS3 over the competition.

Just think, the 80GB will eventually go down to $250 or more by this time next year ($199 perhaps to clear out the PS3 fatties?).

And even though Sony can’t seem to keep a secret to save their lives I’m glad that people can stop making the argument that the PS3 is too expensive and finally see how much value is packed in there over the competition.

OK, I love my PS3 but online with XBL Smashes PSN.
You either #1 – pay to play and have kick ass fun or
#2 – Pay nothing and have heaps of problems.

PS3 has awsome games but it really needs alot of work with it’s online options.
there is no competition at the moment for XBL.

I just hope Tekken 6 has a good online funtion on the PS3, but with my experiance so far with SoulCalibur IV and Street Fighter IV I am not getting my hopes up.

    ———–

I forgot to mention that the PS3 when it comes to First Person Shooter games, the online seems to be good, it’s just other genres of games mostly fighting games.
on Street Fighter IV I can’t even find any matches where the XBL version I can find green connections all the time.
but games such as Killzone II, Resistance 2 and COD seem good with online.

    ——–

I must just love too many fighting games LOL

I agree that XBL is a great system but it’s not like Sony hasn’t made any innovations that now compete with what MS is offering.

Movies, TV shows, demos (many of them now launching on Thursday so 360 owners don’t get a two day head-start on PS3 owners). Other than Netflix and the obvious cross-game chat (which I’m hoping will sneak into the 3.0 update) the two networks are pretty comparable right now and other than Sony’s so-called arrogance or their inability to understand that features like Facebook and Twitter are important applications to the American public their network shouldn’t be underestimated and there’s nothing saying that some of these features won’t make it into a future update.

And if enough people ask for FB and Twitter Sony won’t be able to ignore those users forever. Especially if the feature becomes really popular on the 360.

I have no problems with the PSN even with Street Fighter….almost never a problem.

So when you say the XBL has no competition I disagree wholeheartedly.

All that ever seems to happen when I play Street Fighter IV is NO MATCHES FOUND, PLEASE WIDEN YOUR SEARCH.
Sorry Eric but I never ever get that stuff on 360.
we are all entitled to our opinions but my PS3 online experiance has been nothing but trash.

I don’t know what your doing to get into matches but everyone I know plays SFIV on 360 due to the issues I have mentioned.

I have just gotten over it and only buy single player games for my PS3.
Online may suck when Tekken 6 comes out on PS3 but I am always loyal to SONY when it comes to Tekken and Final Fantasy.

Please don’t misunderstand and get the idea that I am brining sony down.
I am a Sony man all the way, always have been and always will be.
I just seem to have too many issues with PSN to enjoy it.

I should also mention that I do live in Australia, so that could be aiding the problems even more.
players in the US certainly have alot more going for them.

I am in no way refuting that you may have problems but my point is that is not the typical case. Maybe it has to do with you being in Australia, I dont know, but I do know that everyone I know who has PS3′s never really complains about the PSN in terms of connectivity issues as they are rare in most cases.

OK, I play online on PS3 too and I agree with FinalFantasySaga.
The PSN is nothing but trouble.
If you want to play Online, get a 360.

I traded Street Fighter IV because of no matches.
Bought it again on the 360 and it’s a huge difference.
I’d pay for XBOX live anyday over free service.

I just hope that Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 has good Online play.
I’d hate to be joining with players in a tough fight with heaps of lag and drop puts.

You also are talking about problems with the same game, even though I have no problems with it.

Basing the whole PSN off one game is foolish. These games are coded by the devs and if they lag that isnt the PSN’s fault but the devs and their servers.

1 game is enough Eric, Street Fighter IV had alot of hype and people were wanting online.

So yes basing this issue on a hyped game should be noted.
There are other gamers out there who are sick and tired of FPS games.
but they are the only ones that get the decent online.
But on 360 even fighting games work to perfection.

To you it is foolish, but to other gamers ONLINE is becoming a must have for Consoles.

I am currently playing Marvel Vs Capcom 2 on PS3 and there are hardly any lobbies, went to my mates house and tried it on 360 and Lobbies are everywhere.

I believe you do have problems with it Eric, you just won’t eccept it.

I read up alot about this issue and all that PS3 owners can come back with is that it’s free.
