Over at my local GameStop (where I work), our Sony rep stopped in earlier today to update the PlayStation 3 kiosks and check in with us. I decided to ask him about all the rumors going around on the PlayStation 3 slim. When I asked him about whether or not is coming he told me this:

“All I’m going to say is this: both a price drop and a firmware update with backwards compatibility are coming soon.”

Directly from the mouth of a Sony rep. GamesCom is next week, folks. Don’t be surprised if you hear the announcement.

Nice scoop! No news on the infamous Slim but just knowing that a price drop and a firmware update for backwards compatibility (PS2 obviously) is great news. Guess we’ll start seeing PS2 classics showing up on the PSN Store. I never finished it but I might have to put some down money for MGS2 (I never finished MSG3 or 4 either but I can’t seem to get enough of the MGS franchise).

One can only hope for a more community-centric update to the XMB as well. With MS diving into Twitter and Facebook Sony stupid not to do something that expands the communal aspects of the PS3.
