After years of waiting for information, it’s debuted in the latest issue of Game Informer. RAGE, which uses id Software‘s new Tech 5 engine, is an open-world first person shooter set 80 years after a catastrophic asteroid collision with Earth, destroying most of civilization. Though surviving humans do remain, some of those survivors may have been subjected to mutation.
The story revolves around a silent protagonist part of “Project Eden,” a civilization rebuilding program where hundreds of people where buried in 12 person “arks” in cryosleep, in hopes they could rebuild society after the asteroid hits. However, they awaken sooner than scheduled, due to an unexpected earthquake.
A vehicle is available to you throughout the game, which you’ll care for, upgrade, and customize. The development team said that they want your vehicle “to be an extension of your first-person avatar,” rather than just driving the vehicle and getting rid of it like you would in a game like Grand Theft Auto IV.
There’s no karma in RAGE, meaning you won’t be choosing between good and evil. Missions will be handed out like quests – you’ll get them from NPCs and complete them as asked. Your health will auto-regenerate in the field, so there aren’t med packs. Races are a big deal in RAGE; completing races can earn players certificates, enabling them to buy new upgrades and parts for their vehicle. There will also be racing leaderboards.
As for other features in the game, you’ll be able to build weapons and sentry bots, or purchase them. You can play stealthy instead of going out, guns blazing, if that’s what you prefer, too. Also, a show named ‘Mutant Bash TV’ will be on the game’s TV station, which you’ll be able to participate in. It’s basically like a battle arena broadcasted on the tube.
Thanks, NeoGAF.
